Love it! 1,000 TW tires?
Just about 1,000 TW! Sharing an old video for someone interested in beginning car modifications. :-)
I was cringing a bit bit when you were holding the piece in your hand and drilling into the plastic. Too easy to slip and put that bit drill bit right into your palm. 😬
Ha! It could happen, but I usually try to start by pushing lightly until it starts to makes a divot and then push harder once it starts. I'll be more careful next time now that you said something. 🙂
Great video and nice car!
awesome work! Loved the commentary LOL
Jackie Ding style!
Hey there's me at 12:45! Great laps! Judging by the competition, I let you pass way too easy. 😉
Sorry I didn't notice that was you and I didn't see you in the paddock or I would have stopped to say HI! You're always welcome to come to my trailer and grab a seat - even if I am not there! Did you have a good time?
Did you find the issue?
Thanks for asking! I am not sure yet. Next track day is in a week (July 3). I know of at least two possibilities - both of which I attempted to fix: 1) the electronic wastegate was a bit out of adjustment (had to bring it to a shop to get the measurement and then make the adjustment at home after it cooled off - it was successful because the intermittent code went away) and 2) I replaced some of the wiring for the electronic wastegate harness that got melted against the exhaust manifold. I am hoping it's resolved now.
@@kenschlorf I had an intermittent code of the EWG on my last trackday untill it was a permanent one. My car is the shop now to get a Pure500 fitted with a new EWG, i'm hoping this will fix the issue, i might be a melted wire to...error code was electronic wastegate short circuit.
@@kenengrie Interesting! Thanks for sharing your situation as another data point. I had a different message than what you have but don’t have access to it right now. I am a bit concerned that my stuck wastegate issue on the first pure750 may have wrecked the ewg but I’ll soon find out. I think you’ll enjoy your pure500!
Wow. And I was feeling good about my consistent 1:51 something laps. Then again, mine is still stock. Gives me something to shoot for though.
How are your times with your new-to-you M2 vs. the M235i?
@@kenschlorf I'm consistently about 5-6 seconds a lap faster in the M2 vs the M235. Some of it is horsepower, some of it is better brakes (the bigger discs make a difference, even though the calipers/pads are the same), and a big chunk is the larger tires and camber. I'm sure as I get more used to the better cornering/brakes, I'll be able shed another 2-3 seconds fairly easily. Probably into the 1:48's. Getting below that will take effort.
That's exactly what mine looks like
1:38.85, sheesh! Looked near effortless and composed. If you were the 2 door gray BMW out there, I noticed that one was ripping!
That was likely me. Happy to take you for a ride some time! Do you make it to Slowpokes events? They run an open format.
Oh that would be awesome, thank you! I haven’t done Slowpokes yet; I’m relatively new to getting out to various events. Sounds awesome though, would love to join!
@@GalacticBlast Check out Nord Stern Porsche Club for events, too!
This makes me want to get back on track!
Do it! 🙂
are you still on stock rotors or did you upgrade to something like girodisc
I still have the stock rotors.
@@kenschlorf The stock rotors are brilliant on the m2!
A little busy out there!
A bit. Not many traffic-free laps.
what do you use to record the engine RPM and accel? seems to have really high refresh rate considering you also record other temps.
I am using MHD (used to use BM3). The data comes from there. If I go through extra effort, I also incorporate data from the Apex Pro app (g force primarily). It has an excellent refresh rate - I am actually recording more than what's shown and it's quick. I believe there are different rates for different fields (like transmission, water, and oil temp which wouldn't need more than 1 hz), but I couldn't quickly confirm that so don't quote me.
One last thing...this has also helped me to diagnose that during this event my wastegate got stuck in a partially open/closed position...I was able to look at the boost, relative to RPM and Accel and WGDC to see that it wasn't building boost like it should have been. It's very helpful in coordination with the video!
those walls are probably closer than they look
They aren't too bad at that spot. I do my best to push the limits in safer areas - this was one of them.
Fun to listen to the commentary.
was the m2 tuned or stock?
It was tuned most of its life with a VF Engineering tune (very tame), followed by a mild OTS BM3 tune. Less than half of that 30k was with burbles/crackle/whatever poppy-nosies. Seems like premature failure. Turbo journal bearings show that one side (guessing the hot side - can't remember) wore prematurely. Thrust bearing was damaged but only because/after the shaft broke into a hot-side and a cold-side.
Please scare Tyler some more!
Good to hear from you Tim! I hope you are well!
I was wondering when I would see a video where you are blowing my doors off. 🤪 Interesting to hear your conversation with your student. He had a lot of good questions and comments.
Bummer. Is that your M2?
Yes. That's how I ended my day on Sunday. Had to leave the car there. I picked it up 5 days later and brought it home thanks to Matt and Tyler.
Turbo weather is so much fun. Set a few personal bests that weekend also.
It sure is! Glad you got a personal best too! I hear you've upgraded! Looking forward to getting out there with you in your new M2 next year!
Close call on turn 2! Fun watching you two duel. Learned a couple new lines. Keep posting!
It was a pretty close call, but I have been in the dirt there a bit in the past and it's not too bad unless you're WAY off. I bet you'd do alright there too Jim. Brian and I are vastly different on turn 4 and a little bit different on turn 8 (carousel). I still haven't looked at data yet to analyze it - was just having fun. I wish the rear camera had cooperated!
How did you manage to remove the headliner?
It's been a while since I took it off, but the things I can recall are: A, B, & C pillar panels; the courtesy / map light; sun visors. I believe it just pulled down at that point with some sort of friction clips.
Nice 1:42.72 Ken! Watching your laps will really benefit me next time I'm out. I'm clearly missing some of the apexes. 🏎️
Where are you pulling the oil pressure value from? It doesn’t appear to be a common OBD value you can query.
Hey Greg! I hope you are well! I am using ProTuning Freaks bootmod3 software/tune. They have figured out a way on some of the BMWs to get data through the OBD2 port that is not typically/normally expected. There may be other software that can do it, too, but this is how I got mine.
Aaah. OK. Yeah, that seems to be the common answer. Or a dedicated hardware sensor. Annoying we can't just pull it from plain OBD. Thanks.
I highly recommend BOYA M1S for external mic. and use a "dead cat". it will get rid of most if not all wind noises. I attached mine on rear license plate and route the cable to goPro. check out how it works on my Eagles Canyon Raceway track day.
Thanks for your thoughts! I have a dead cat that I'll put on next time out. What are you running at the GoPro end? I have their adapter and the media mod. It seems like if I just use the quick capture, it won't use the external mic. I have to leave the camera on and start recording from there.
@@kenschlorf i have go pro hero 11 Mini and I attach it to the sunroof. Recently it supported the external mic adapter so I just connect it to that. If anything make sure that the switch of the mic is on camera and not phone
It seems to work on my end as soon as I press record. When I lose my videos is usually when the mic switch is on phone mode instead of camera
Wow that is a fast Camaro(?)!. Hey at 4:26 you passed my friends in the Porsche!
Guessing they were just getting on and warming up. That Porsche looks quite capable!
Ya that's correct. They had a passenger that they were warming up to the intensity too.
Hey, what filming overlay software are you using?
@@jeffriepe8710 For the video, it is the standard video generated by the Apex Pro Track Coach device/software. I was using a different software and data capture device using the ipad (ProTuning Freak's bootmod3) and I wanted to overlay its data using RaceRender or something similar but was having a hard time matching the data to the video because of the way it records time (I submitted a ticket to them to hopefully get it fixed). So someday I hope to overlay additional data.
@@jeffriepe8710 When are you coming out again? Going to hit Quattroberfest?
So the Mustang let everyone pass except you?
It's looks worse than it was. The guy who owns the mustang and I were talking a bit beforehand and I offered to swap lead/follow to share the video with him. So I got this video of him/his lines. He wasn't sure if I wanted to pass him or not and told me so afterwards. I told him it wasn't a big deal because I just ran through the pits. Ideally, he would have let me by, but it wasn't a big deal to me. Now...if we hadn't talked beforehand about it, I would be a bit more concerned about his ability to attend this event, but I still would have gone through the pits to catch open space.
I’m laughing at how your tablet is acting like a g-meter, and flipping sideways every time you exceed 1g in a right hand turn.
I was too Greg! That'll be the last time that it does that because I locked the rotation going forward. 🙂
Funny!
awesome driving
how much does your m2 weigh?
Guessing around 3350. Stock is 3450. I have about half the interior removed, but added a trailer hitch (for track wheels and tools) and half-cage.
@@kenschlorf nice! Id like to do some weight reduction on the m2. Just feels so heavy haha
That’s flying! Such smooth inputs
Way to stay calm under pressure!
That was my buddy Mike Cooper driving at the time. He's a great and calm driver.
Sucky way to end the weekend, but at least you got home ok.
Getting a new personal best on Friday before the breakage was pretty great...I made the sub-1:40 club! I picked up a second student and they both did really well. So overall the weekend was good. Thanks for the offer of your wheel studs. I came close to asking you to borrow them before I left but after talking to professional metal guy, I decided they'd be OK. It seemed like you had a great time, too. I didn't end up chatting with your son. Did he have a good time?
@@kenschlorf Under 1:40? Wow! I was pleased with getting to 1:55.8. Can't imagine what <1:40 feels like. We all had a good time.
what shift indicator is that? thanks
It's an Apex Pro and can be found at apextrackcoach.com
If you referring to the device with red and green lights, it's the Apex Pro. It's not a shift indicator but rather, basically, a g-force meter showing how much grip is available (red lights) vs. what is being used (green lights) based on AI from prior information from the same session/day/etc...
Nice one Ken!
Thanks Tim! I hope you are well!
Hope the snow melts by Sommer Schnell. This year I’m not so sure it will. 🤪❄️🙄
I sure hope it does! See you at Sommer Schnell Greg!
Wow this is pretty early on in the season to have BIR open with snow still on the ground!
It sure was! This video was taken on Sunday and it was better than Saturday when there was blowing snow on the track. It was pretty surprising how much traction there was given the temps and snow. Bridgestone RE71RS for the win!
@@kenschlorf that sounds like an interesting experience for sure. Can't say other tracks hold events with drifting snow!
What car is the camera car? Kinda looks like a purple Porsche.
Hey Jeff! Hope to see you soon! Yes. It’s Scott Brown’s Porsche.
What Camera Setup is this? 0 shakiness and no panning. also well controlled there, I have not been able to regain control when back end comes too loose.
For this video, the front is the GoPro 8 Black and the rear is GoPro Hero 5 Black. Both are mounted to the rollbar which helped stability significantly. Turning off Hypersmooth stops the panning back and forth based on g forces - I'd highly recommend turning it off. When I had stock seats, a headrest mount worked pretty well. It mounted on the two posts of the headrest and telescoped towards the middle of car. Can be found on Amazon for fairly low dollars. Adding some new things this year for videos: 1) external microphone by the rear license plate hooked up to the GoPro Hero 5 and 2) external microphone hooked up to my helmet communicator for the GoPro Hero 8. Looking forward to trying it in about a month. I drive with all nannies off. Watching your videos, I'll bet you will catch on quickly. While you have it enabled, do your best to watch the light and stop it from engaging (which might be tough because it activates fairly quickly). Once you can understand when/where it activates is likely a good time to try turning it off. If you have a driving coach, they can help you determine when to turn it off, too.
@@kenschlorf I have been driving with nannies off actually. It was mostly cutting my acceleration coming out of turn. Now my pedal control is improved and even without Nannies on I rarely spin my wheel. Could be I am not pushing hard enough. My car is fully stock and have no modifications other than 437M wheels and RE-71RS. The first track weekend I had MDM and I didnt seem to notice any lights. 2nd weekend I turned it off and my time improved immensely. My latest event i fully turned it off and it was my first weekend going opposite direction. It was fun. I am still learning the car and I am sure currently I am still the limiting factor of the car. Lack of front camber is eating my front tires though.
@@kenschlorf in terms of camera mount. I can’t find headrest mount for M2C seats do to it has fixed headrest. I was wondering if there are other options compared to mounting to sunroof. It works for what I wanted to do but not very smooth.
@@DailyDrivenM2 Sorry - I didn't realize you had the Competition. I still have my stock seats if you're interested in them so you can mount a camera. 🙂
@@DailyDrivenM2 I made an assumption that you were driving with he nannies on - bad assumption. It made a huge difference for me too the first time I turned them off, too! You were doing great with the nannies off. Collecting data will be a big step for you, too (if you aren't already), so you can see where you can gain time (assuming you want to improve your time). The GoPro does have some data that can be exported for analysis, but a separate tool would provide more data points. Looking at data is one of my favorite things to do off track! I have found lots of time analyzing it. I have a fresh set of RE-71RS waiting for my first event at the end of April and am looking forward to seeing how they do. I will use these street tires to and from the track as well as if it rains at the track. I am a bit addicted to the used/takeoff slicks - they are so grippy! Camber plates helped a lot with tire shoulder wear - I still have the stock springs and dampers (looking forward to upgrading some day). Are you running a square set up so you can at least rotate the tires?
How has the steering feedback (i.e. clarity of road surface) has changed for you with this?
I didn't really notice that large of a difference (which could be good or bad depending on your desired impact). It's a piece of a larger whole that when everything is firmed up will provide better feel overall and likely better tire wear on the track. I hope that helps you!
I did something similar in my Black Armour helmet. I wrapped loop velcro around the plug and then a strip of the hook velcro on the side of my helmet. Then, it is out of the way when not in use.
That's a good idea too. I bought zip tie adhesive mounts and plan to use that to hold the cord from dangling. We'll see how it works when they come in the mail.
Thank you very much for the video. It is very helpful in the direction I need to go. Doug
Awesome lap!
Nice!
Wow.
It was slick out there, although it was worse when the sun came out. My tires had plenty of tread so it was easier for me than you on the old RS4s.
I later regretted holding you up the whole lap. Sorry I waited until the hot pits pass through! You were doing well on the wet surface! What level of traction control were you at? Did you have it all shut off?
@@kenschlorf I think I started the session in MDM and then turned everything off after a lap or two.
Nice driving once again. Donnybrook looks like a lot of fun in your car!
