During the Great Depression, frugal Vermonters-already used to pinching pennies-are claimed to have asked “What Depression?” But the reality is that Vermont’s economy was cut in half during the first three years of the Depression. In this presentation, Jamie Franklin explores how Federal programs, designed to put creative professionals to work, led to a wealth of artistic expression in Vermont,...

The umbrella theme for the American and Vermont 250th commemorations for the period 2025-27 is inclusion, especially the inclusion of the stories and voices of individuals and groups who have been omitted from, marginalized or misrepresented in past commemorations. This is not a new idea: the 1976 Bicentennial also aspired to inclusiveness, and the past 50 years of scholarship and exhibitions h...

The Kelleys: The Story behind the Kelley Hotel and Kelley Stand Road
Переглядів 3682 місяці тому
In the years after statehood, there were many efforts to build roads (turnpikes as they were called then). One such turnpike was built connecting the towns of Sunderland, Stratton and Wardsboro. Today that road is known as the Kelley Stand Road. Members of the Kelley family were instrumental in getting that road funded, in developing a logging business, and then building a large boarding house ...

Moses Robinson and the Birth of Democracy in Early Vermont
Переглядів 822 місяці тому
He may be an early Vermonter you never heard of, but Moses Robinson played many important roles. A member of the first family to settle in Bennington, he served as town clerk for 20 years. Then he was elected governor and, in turn, was also Vermont's first U.S. senator and chief justice of the state Supreme Court. Robert Mello's biography of him is one of Vermont's most important. Shirley Jackson, perhaps the greatest writer of the horror/gothic fiction genre in 20th-century America, lived and worked for most of her renowned literary career, from 1945 until her untimely death in 1965, in North Bennington. She rose to national prominence in 1948 with the publication of her chilling short story "The Lottery,” about which she explained, "I suppose I hoped, by setting a part...

Do you know where Jared Munson was located in Bennington. By 1815 he was located in Upper Canada.
It's great to hear this historic gem is finally getting some attention.
Thank you for this programming!
This piece of history deserves to be told. Please remake the video.

Lieut James Breakenridge was my 7th great-grandfather! Direct lineage to me!
Mine too. He was my 6th-ggf.
BTW, I am a little concerned with the info presented starting at 37:00 of James Breakenridge's supposed Loyalist tendencies. He mentioned James and son being banished by the Committee on Safety and serving with the Queens Loyal Rangers. I wonder if he is mixing up James Breakenridge Sr and his son James Breakenridge Jr. The son James and his brother David (my ancestor) served with James Rogers' Loyal Rangers. James Jr (Lt-1st Company) and David Breakenridge (Ensign, 3rd Co) went to Canada during the Revo with Rogers. They letter settled in Brockville (Elizabethtown), Leeds & Grenville, Ontario. I've been to their graves in Canada. But James Sr never fought against for the British. He also sold supplies to VT State Troops during the Revo and is recognized by the NSSAR as a patriot. Paul Bunnell UE also published an article in The New Loyalist Index (Vol 7, 2010) with evidence arguing James Sr was not a Loyalist and should not be recognized by the United Empire Loyalist Assoc of Canada while his sons are recognized as Loyalists.
