We have a similar thing with trains changing aptitude in Shizuoka. We even have a separate loco pushing the trains up for a short streak, I am not sure though whether it is for real, or for touristic purposes. The line, Oikawa line, was heavily affected by rainfalls two years ago, and there are rumors that it might be abandoned. I also feel that it is a shame to abandon the line since it is very beautiful and connects to a mountain region with some (mostly) elderly population. Hie from Shizuoka, by the way! Key

Honshu railway Sanyo main line adopts DC supply, while JR Kyushu uses AC supply except the classic line Kanmon Tunnel and Karatsu line. Shimonoseki is within JR West turf, while Moji is a JR Kyushu station. So it is a shuttle service between both stations using dual current rail stock from JR Kyushu. From the beginning of the ride, the train changed its power supply (AC > DC) before entering the tunnel.
