Viewing training as entertainment = success?
Переглядів 452 місяці тому
A recent Insta post by Will Ratelle got me thinking...... Training is entertainment. Coaches and athletes will often change their programming to develop specific adaptations, when in reality they may be doing that because they crave novelty (ultimately to keep them interested in the program). It also got me thinking about consistency. Elite athletes WANT to train. Training is entertainment for ...

    Super useful! How often should you be aiming for the lower zone runs?

    • @theprogresstheory
      @theprogresstheory 22 години тому

      Thanks, Ben. It depends on your goals and running experience. I try and aim for roughly 70-90% of running time to be in the lower zone, slowly descreasing this to 50% during short, intense periods where I may have a specific upcoming race or personal best attempt. Hope this helps

    Hey Phil, regarding idea of the ascending strategy. Although not focused on on the cardiorespiratory system, would a, held until fatigued, isometric contraction of a muscle elicit a lot of the same effects within the muscle? (Oxygen desaturation, vascular dilation of the capillaries, muscle relation, etc).

    • @theprogresstheory
      @theprogresstheory 5 днів тому

      Hey, thanks for the comment. Not quite, while an isometric contraction would certainly cause high desaturation if prolonged, the muscle contraction itself constrains the surrounding capillaries not allowing them to dilate as much as they could, so it would struggle to develop that over time

    So the lesson is to not worry too much about your VO2max and train better for economy?

    • @theprogresstheory
      @theprogresstheory 6 днів тому

      To some extent. Most sub-elite athletes could do with improving both. However, VO2max does hit a ceiling and those successful elite athlete are often incredibly economical

    I was thinking about how I could go deeper and find out more on the traditional forms of strength and conditioning in Chinese Martial arts. Since I am out here, calling in the older and successful coaches for a chat actually sounds like a great way to examine this. Especially with some unique skills that are less seen in the west (handstands holds on the two index fingers for example). Thanks for the vid, a seed has well and truly been planted 👍

  • @SophieSionByde
    @SophieSionByde 3 місяці тому

    I quite agree with you, I must say. My take is that it's not just how much you practice something, but HOW you do it, that gets you to mastery and excellence. It's so important to practice things the right way, to get really good at them. Great video 🙂

    • @theprogresstheory
      @theprogresstheory 3 місяці тому

  • @ruddfitnesscoaching1260
    @ruddfitnesscoaching1260 3 місяці тому

    I agree that it depends on which session is of higher priority. As an endurance(tri) athlete i tend to do the endurance session first, particularly if it involves intervals or intensity above z2. I can then do strength training after a few hrs break with limited impact on the strength session. I’ve tried it the other way round and the muscular fatigue definitely affects the run!

  • @rosengeorgiev7938
    @rosengeorgiev7938 4 місяці тому

    its not finite time, its finite recovery. For strength you will not train more than couple of hours, 4-5 times a week, its not a time issue to have a second workout for endurance each day. its recovery issue, you cannot recover fast enough to keep up with both at the same time. Also the comparison goes like this: if you focus on endurance for 6 months and then on strength for 6 months, while maintaining the endurance. Would this have better results in both, than training hybrid for 1 year? I would argue yes

  • @YaYippieYeah
    @YaYippieYeah 4 місяці тому

    You also oversimplify (a bit). I expect the the hybrid athlete to plateau earlier, he just cannot train his lifts for strength with the same intensity/volume/frequence.

    You don't actually address the concept of the interference effect at all. You just assert that the finding of the study aren't what you "should see" I can only assume that you have some evidence for your claims, but this video in isolation is fundamentally unscientific and doesn't give any reason to listen to what you have to say

    • @theprogresstheory
      @theprogresstheory 4 місяці тому

      I don't address the interference effect in this video, no, but that wasn't my aim. I use the study as an example to highlight that a direct comparison between the two programs doesn't take into account that you would want to see a difference between the two programs because the development of strength should progress at different speeds. The intereference effect is just another factor which may impact strength/hypertrophy development, which I will go into detail in future videos

    If you want to get stuff done you cannot rely on motivation - you simply cannot be motivated to the same level every day. What you can rely on is discipline. Mental toughness is required to develop and then stick with your discipline.
