Welcome to where the “about” section on my channel used to be. The name’s John and this is something of a personal channel I suppose. As you may have seen I post anything and whenever I might feel like it. More recently I’ve taken up the hobby of collecting train horns. Hope I might be able to entertain and make good use of the time you all spend. Thank you.
Nathan Airchime K2HA
This is my parts build narrow font Nathan Airchime K2HA. As mentioned in the video, I believe this is the correct designation for this manifold type. I saw this manifold on eBay and since no one really has done a video on it before, I figured I would be the first. This doesn't sound quite like Metrolink however. I use a manual Graham White valve and almost every piece of Metrolink equipment that I know of uses solenoids. Additionally, when I got the 4A bell from auction and opened it up, I found the first diaphragm was damaged and creased with the outline of the nozzle. I think this is the cause of the slight squeal from it in particular when I let off the valve. I might make another video when I get a new diaphragm for it. Anyways, hope you liked it and let me know what you think!

This is a brief video of a project I've been working on for a bit. I finally finished it and have been doing some test runs. For now it works great, but after having upgraded to 1/2 air hose in and out, I now realize that I need more air volume. Eventually when I save some more money, I'll get another 20 gallon tank. Let me know what you think of my setup and any suggestions you might have. Tha...
Nathan Airchime P2 Old Cast

This is my old cast Nathan Airchime P2. It uses an old cast 2 bell and a modified new cast 3 bell that plays the old cast frequency. I already have a video of this horn on the channel, but this time around I have added an additional diaphragm to each bell. Sounds okay, but in the end I think I like the sound of the new cast P2 more. I'll keep trying different bell combinations until I find one ...
Nathan Airchime P3M New Cast

At the request of one of my viewers, I took my new cast 2 and 3 bells from my P2 and my recently acquired 5 bell and bolted them onto my gullwing manifold from my old cast P3. I was quite surprised with the results. Being a sand cast horn, it sounds very similar to a sand cast K3L. However, the 5 bell was doing its own thing and lagging thanks to my 25 foot air hose. This probably won't be a pr...
Nathan Airchime P5 Mixed Cast

This is my mixed cast P5. I built this using my old cast P3 and added modified new cast 3 bell that plays the old cast frequency and a new cast 5 bell. Even with double diaphragms it ate air pretty quickly. Next time I take it out, I’ll try single diaphragms.

This is my Old Cast Nathan Airchime P3. According to the guy I bought it from, his dad obtained this horn from a railroad in southern California that closed down 40 years ago. I have no idea as to the heritage of the horn. When it arrived, the 1 and 2 bells were mounted on the top of the wings with the 4 in the middle. Bells 1 and 2 have oval inlets while 4 has a the newer circular inlet. Not s...

I originally wasn’t going to upload this, but thought, “why not?”. This is an Old Cast Nathan P2 with bells 1 and 2. It uses single diaphragms in this video. While it is loud, it does NOT sound great and is reminiscent of a single tone Leslie found on small switchers. Honestly the New Cast version of this horn sounds much better and I might try that some day if I ever get a new cast 1 bell. Eit...
Nathan Airchime P2 (Single diaphragms)

This is another static test of my Nathan Airchime P2. I had taken out two diaphragms to borrow for another horn leaving it with single diaphragms. Sounds pretty nice in my opinion. I think I’ll keep it with double diaphragms though, as that is how it was made. Hope you enjoy!
Nathan Airchime P5 Old Cast (All bells forward)
Переглядів 7165 місяців тому
This is an all bells forward test of my old cast Nathan P5. I have an old cast P3 and I have the hybrid 3 bell but I’m missing the 5 bell. So I substituted it with a spare old cast P2 bell. This means it has bells 1,2,2,3, and 4. Hopefully one day I’ll have a 5 bell to make a proper P5, but this will work for now.

This was my first test of my brand new Nathan Airchime New Cast P2. She still has her manufacture’s tag on. This horn uses bells 2 and 3 and is well known as a Metrolink and Caltrain horn as Caltrain uses it on almost all of their equipment and the vast majority of Metrolink’s equipment had as well. However, with Caltrain’s new EMU’s, the P2 is not used and is instead replaced by some petty sin...
Nathan Airchime P2 Old Cast First Test
Переглядів 4456 місяців тому
This is the first test of my old cast Nathan P2 . I bought the 2 and 3 bells on eBay from a great guy named Dan. The 3 bell is a hybrid, meaning it was a new cast 3 that was modified by Mike Muha to sound the correct old cast frequency. Sounds pretty good by my ears, but feel free to leave your thoughts down below. More horn content will be coming soon.

Schezo Voice Impression (Puyo Puyo Tetris)
If you have a spare KS-1 bell you should swap the 4A with it to make a K12, They're quite common in Australia and they have a really nice tone to them, they can be quite punchy. If you do so, make sure not to use a restrictor at all.
Hey, thanks for the suggestion! I do have a K1 bell as I’m in the process of building a K5LA. This 2 chime manifold has no restrictor, so I might give this combo a try. Hopefully I can get that K5LA built and have that on the channel too.
@@johnwestfieldytNote: the K12 sounds best with sudden blasts instead of gentle quilling, Since all the trains that have these in Australia do so because of the electric solenoid.
I believe it's actually a K24, as the Metrolink F125s videos I've seen show a tritone. A K24A is a perfect fourth, not as menacing sounding.
Hey, thanks for watching! I’ve read on 5 Chime consultants that Metrolink uses a 2 and 4 so I might be incorrect. At some point I will get a straight 4 and try that out. As for the F125’s, they have two horns. One is located underneath (K2H) and one located on the roof (K3LA/K3L). Hope you enjoyed just the same!
Depends on the Rotem/F125. I've seen videos of K2Hs on Metrolink with bells with 2 and 4 as well as bells 2 and 4A.
@@sepa2401 I know what you're saying. I've seen a clip of one with a K24A. However, that was likely a mistake as the majority use a K24.
@@TheRailfan360 Yeah that is likely. That mainly happens when the horn is assembled with the wrong bell accidentally by Micro Precision or when they run out of stocked 4 bells. From what I know, Simalex die casts the horns, and Micro Precision machines and tunes the horns in-house. After all, every K horn starts out as a pile of parts.
@@johnwestfieldyt the rule usually goes for nathan that if it has under 3 bells, its designated by the bells used. a good example of this is cpkc's gp20ecos, they have dual chime horns designated as k13b's, named after the 1 and 3b used on it. hope this helps
4A sounds a little fouled.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. One of the diaphragms is damaged and creased from over tightening or having too much pressure being applied, leaving a mark from the seat of the bell. I bought a replacement diaphragm so hopefully that fixes it.
AWESOME. do you mind if i use this noise in my music? I would love to use this for some atmosphere. Also, i love splatoon.
Hi there! Thank you for the subscription and like. You may use the audio of the horn itself as long as you credit me in the description. Also, feel free to leave a link to the song when you’re done and I’ll give it a listen!
@@johnwestfieldyt of course. I will mention you. But it may be modified in sound design. Keep that in mind. Anyways, thank ya!!
@@VrantusOfficial sounds good!
Ay it's the P5LLA! If you want more authenticity, you could have the #1 face backwards to bring out more of the K4LA part of the chord.
I get what you’re saying with the reversed 1 bell. Might try that sometime in the future. Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a K5LLA, what’s the bell configuration?
Thanks! Interestingly enough, another person said the same thing. Bell combination is old cast 1, 2, 3 (modified new cast bell that plays old cast frequency), 4, and new cast 5. Was running this with double diaphragms and all bells forward.
If you add a NC #5 to this, you'll get a K3LA sound! If you want something really fun, you can remake the K5LLA by adding bells: old cast #1, old cast #4, and new cast #5.
Thanks for the idea. Pretty interesting. I already have a video of my mixed cast P5 with old cast bells 1,2,3 (modified new cast 3 seen in this video), 4, and the new cast 5. Let me know what you think!
Brought me back to my childhood, I remember the U23Cs and C30-7As with that exact horn pulling trains into the yard near my home
Glad to hear this video brought back good memories! Very interesting to hear that these locomotives used this horn. Perhaps a result of a damaged number 4 bell on the P3? Thanks for watching!
Interesting how old cast doesn’t really sound too different from the new cast p2s
Yeah, very interesting. There is a noticeable difference but the two are very similar. I guess the bells may not be that different in the notes they play. Still think I like the new cast more.
@ Definitely agree New cast sounds a little better
try new cast 1 and 2 bells for a nicer sound in my opinion
Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t have a new cast 1 bell yet. Might get one soon. Would love to try the Sun Rail horn!
If you are wondering what bell combination Metrolink uses on some of their P2s, they use NC 2 and 4 bells along with NC 2 and 3 bells.
I figured it was 2 and 4. Gotta try that next. This combo still sounds okay but I think I’ll like NC 2 and 4 more. Thanks again!
Sounds great! Not a bad alternative for those who want that K3L sound (albeit a bit high pitched). It would also be useful on a bike or other vehicles where a large air tank can't be installed. P horns are known for their efficiency.
Thanks for the suggestion. I think I’ll definitely have to get a runby of it once my rig is finished. And I agree, a bit high pitched than a K3L but pretty close.
K3L
Pretty much!
The technical term for this style is a P3M. Its sound more closely mimics the Leslie S3B
Thanks for the info! Haven’t heard of the P3M but I gotta say, I like it. Definitely will have to do a runby when I get my setup finished.
@ Of course! Yeah it definitely has a kind of cheery sound to it. I made one of those and they sound sweet at speed.
Corte de Hornet
Now you need a NC #5 bell to get the K3L sound!
Hey thanks for checking out my video! That’s a really cool idea. That’s one of my goals, so I’ll be sure to give that a try on my old cast P3’s manifold whenever I can grab a NC 5 bell.
Got a new video up with this setup. Be sure to check it out!
You should probably take apart the horn and check to see if anything’s weird.
For reference, the 1 bell came from my old cast P3. I already fully took apart the horn and washed it out. I reassembled it and put it and an old cast 2 bell on my low profile manifold. The bell combination is just not that good. Also, the horn was using single diaphragms and I had already used a good amount of air in my tank.
nice whered you get your P2 from
Hey thanks for checking this out. I know a person who was able to get it for me. Can’t go into specifics, but I’ll do a dedicated video on this horn sometime in the future.
You should probably open up the 1 and check if the internals are assembled correctly, and if the cork gasket is blocking the inlet on the foot.
Hey there, thanks for the advice. I already replaced the ancient and cracked cork gaskets. I have brand new ones on. Could probably check the inlet again. The 1 bell sounded fine to me, I just think the bell combination is bad. Who knows. Thanks again!
Note: horn pictured in the thumbnail is not my horn. I was too lazy to reassemble the horn the way it was here. I used the low profile 2 chime manifold from my new cast horn. Horn in the thumbnail was from a google image search.

Where do you put the water in the machine?
The water in the machine drains out the bottom through some hoses that go to a drain. I hope that helps.
Hi 👋 thank you so much. I have a question for you: we got this machine a week ago but is showing w-068 machine locked start cleaning. How can we delete this error?
Hmm never had that error when I worked there. I would recommend cleaning it like I shown in the video. At least using the pellets and rinsing it. If that doesn’t clear the error code I would try and contact someone who is experienced in repairing these machines. I hope this helps!
Hey! Do you have any idea what to do if you come across this error messge? * w-068 machine locked- start cleaning? Thanks for any help! 😊
Hi, never had this message when I worked here. Might be popping up if you haven’t cleaned the machine in a while. I’d reach out to a repairman if you can’t get it fixed. Hope this might help!
Cops needa start watching f1
Question, I had a debate with a co worker so I’d like some clarification.. is there a sensor physically in the grounds drawer.. like can the drawer be submerged in water? I know there is a sensor inside the machine but inside the actual drawer?
Hey there! I do not remember the grounds drawer having a sensor. I believe the sensor is inside the machine itself. The drawer can be rinsed out and put inside a dish washer. The drawer itself is just a piece of plastic with a handle. Hope this helps!
Hey John, thanks for sharing! I was wondering what your overall experience was like with this machine? Is Starbucks still using them?
Hello Jacob. My experience with this machine was good. It worked well and didn’t break too often. I enjoyed having the shot splitter as this allowed us baristas to make two espresso drinks at once. Unfortunately Starbucks as a whole is now using the Mastrena II which in my opinion isn’t as good. You can still find Mastrena I’s in some older Starbucks stores or in Starbucks Reserve stores. Hope this helps!
The nostalgia that comes with this song, man. What a throwback.
2018 was a good year
Hey that’s pretty good 😮
Man U can rev that out to 5800 no issues with a tune like my 04 , gets u into the power of second gear better for the 1-2 shift
Yeah, the versatility of this vehicle is amazing. While that does sound cool, as it is my daily driver, I’m more worried about MPG’s rather than acceleration. 5.3L is no commuter car but I get by if I’m driving it nice and not doing stuff like this.

thanks so much🙏🏾
No problem! I hope this helps!
can i use the tablets for optional instead urnex ? for wands and the plastic thing
Perhaps? We never did this. The tablets are specifically made to clean the machine. You could probably use normal soap for cleaning the wand and other pieces if you had to. Hope this helps!
God why is 2nd gear so long in a 4 speed
Got no idea honestly. I think it’s this way with a lot of older early 2000’s vehicles. Also, pretty sure the Tahoe’s a 6 speed. Your point still stands though.

What do you press on the machine once you insert the tablets to make it clean? Thanks
Hey! I pressed the rinse button on the machine. The rinse button runs hot water through the machine and cleans the insides with the cleaning pellets. Hope this helps!
I’m a barista and our wand gets caked up sometimes because not everyone cleans it 😭. Also I had no idea the middle plastic piece comes off, checking my store’s machines tomorrow!!
Oh no! For us, it was always the metal grill that would get caked up with calcium and milk stuff. I'm glad this video helped lol Good luck!
