2.4 - The Largest True Sailing and Electric Yacht in the World? (Black Pearl)
The sailing yacht Black Pearl is the largest yacht in the world that can make passage only by the wind. It's amazing! But how does it work? Is it a green boat? Does it really generate hundreds of kilowatts while sailing under the wind? What is the rig type on this boat? How does it handle such massive sails? Does it have solar?

Trailer: Croatia, Great Winds, and Lightening
Was great to finally hear definitively why PV sails have yet to be implemented on her. Not bragging, but I had guessed it was to do with the interfaces between sail and power management system. It’s disappointing that the single transatlantic passage made so far was nowhere near as diesel free as predicted.
I like street food! Would like to try some in Ho Chi Minh City! It all looks delicious :)
it would be worth it! some of the best food we've had.
Very good interview, thank you!
thank you!
Absolutely love this rig, at the same time i wonder how other rigs would be performing here.
Probably several different rigs and sails can be used (like the one on Jeff Bezos new sailing super yacht), but the dynarig is modern, effective, and easy to manage for a boat this size. It's by the far the best option, if you like the look. And it looks good!
With everything automated the crew number must be ridiculously low :- 1
Very exiting intro! Croatia has stunning views and vibrant atmosphere :) Have a great journey ahead! Did you film on iPhone?
Beautiful water in Grenada! Nice pink titles, like it!
Porto Montenegro
Why sell it so quickly?
Unfortunately, family situation requires us to be more on land versus living on a boat full time. So we won't be using the Saga as much. And a boat should be used and loved. Even if we don't sell, we will be using the Saga in season several times a year.
14.5mil brand new price?
It's about that, depending on options and toys.
I want to know what that is like heeled over while underway, also what it’s like in rough weather and high waves. Very cool! Definitely one of the most exciting yachts in the world. 💯
Very cool

may i ask why you didn't put them on the hulls?
Such an amazing boat…you guys did a great job 👍😄 You’ve put so much into her, can I ask why you are selling?
Hi Brett. Unfortunately, we had a family situation that requires us to be land bound more and we don't want her to be stuck in a marina.
Ah ok. That’s a shame for you guys but at least you got some good use out of her, and very lucky for the next owners (which I wish could be me 😀)
Hi, sorry, just had one more question. The weight is listed at 9500lb (4.3T), that’s incredibly light for a 45ft cat, is it really that light? I know you say a lot of engine weight, but it’s still half the weight of an Outremer 45?
@@brettgraham1966 No. It should be 9.5 metric tons.
@@bluesaga Ah ok, that makes more sense 👍😄 Still nice and light though👍
We should make and try all of them!
You should! ;-)
Impressive view from the inside seating. Many cats, especially old ones have poor visibility from the lounge seats. Helpful to see your environment whilst on anchor, and fantastic views. How many kg does it weigh, loaded and unloaded?
We have a great outlook from inside the salon and pretty much 360. The weight is 9.5 metric tons light and 12.3 metric tons loaded. Check out the walk through video, if you want to see more of the boat.
@@bluesaga Thanks, more videos of it sailing and more detail walk throughs would be nice, fantastic looking boat, but I see you are selling it :(
@@AORD72 Cool. Yeah, we are selling for family reasons, but only selling to someone who would appreciate it.
Great interview Vu and Isabella!
Thanks Jack!
Wow, beautiful yacht, awesome technologies!
Really not any yacht in its league in terms of technology or environmental aspects
how much??

Well done guys! 🔥
Subscribed. this is the type of boat i am Interested , 100% Electric Sailboat. With my poor hearing and the bad CC, i could not get the name of the Anti-Foul used, could some1 help me with that ? Fair Winds 😎
MacGlide. Seems like many people are interested in it. So maybe we will do a quick video on it at some point.
@@bluesaga thank you :)
Great to hear designer talking about his design. I noticed the Utremeer have a good flat run aft, nor volume in the stern is good supporting the excess weight people put in the stern too! Shame V-cat did not survive , do you know what happened to the molds? Cheers Warren
Last I heard they were sitting taking a beat from weather outside. Probably not in good shape. I don't think anyone had done anything with them for like 4-5 years, but I don't know for sure what's happening with them.
Beautiful cat! Who is the designer and where did you have her built?
Francois Perus is the naval architect and Blue Saga was built in former Bavaria boat yard in Croatia. She is currently for sale as we have a family situation and need to start to go back on shore as soon as we can sell her.

Who is the pretty lady on the yacht, she sure prettier than the yacht. Lol!!🔥🔥
This is very true!
2 electric motors by 15 kw each take 30 kw . Considering solar panel abour 200 wats square meter . ?????
We charge over five days to fill up propulsion batteries than make 10-15nm distance. We can do this indefinitely in the long summer days, but usually sail, so it's not necessary and we live off of the power generated by the solar.
Hey. Cool boat. I have a 12m cat currently without engines, and are concidering going electric. What kind of range does your 18kwh battery give you, at what boat weight? Looking forward to you next upfate ;)
This depends a lot on your waterline/weight and what speed you want to make passage under. We can recharge our propulsion 18kwh battery around every 5 days and make about 10-15nm distance at 3.5-5 kts boat speed.
Finally!! This is my dream.
I hope you get to experience something like this soon!
How much is the whole conversion? Due to sails shade , u lose 2/3 charging capacity from solar. What about when sails are not hoisted( not sure is the correct term)? Also, why not doing the silent-yach approach, not sals at all.?
General rule of thumb for solar on bemini top of sailboats is roughly 1/3 of generation capability due to various shadows. However, when we are not sailing by the wind (no sails up), we move the boom (and anything we can) to reduce shadows on the solar in some thing we call solar sailing, which usually gets us about 2/3 of rate generation. In general, we can go 12-15nm every 5 days from sun power only, but it's way more efficient and usually faster to sail by the wind. We can sail with about 5kts of wind at a reasonable speed.
Do you ever plan to show your boat at any boat shows on the eastcoast?
I think we will be in Europe. It's a custom boat. So we don't plan to take it to a boat show to show.
I'm so stoked about your video and Love the Washington mug and Mariners hat your wife is wearing. My husband and I are planning to sail here in about 5 years and we want to go all-electric and be self-sustainable.
Don't know if we will still be in the Med, but please say hi if ever see us. And I hope there will be more options in the future for more sustainable boats.
Awesome... only concept matching to Marsaudon orc42 as far as I can see but including determined hybrid-electric concept - a master piece!
Awesome you decide to hop on a single source electric hybrid system on your cat. Your layout seams to super slim for the size of your boat. Are you willing to share live experience about the behavior of your propulsion system (boat weight vs. tork and battery-stand-time) e.g in heavy weather? And do you share the cost involved for the system? I'd love to learn more for my project.
Will try to share more of this info. Either in a written blog or video one. Stay tune.
@@bluesaga Thank you in advance!
👍👍👍👍👍
Former runner who stroked out. At 77 I get my kicks now riding long distance on a recumbent trike w a 48v 5 kwh lithium ion battery pack and 100% assist Chinese Bafang 9 speed electronically stepped electric motor & controller kit ( or zero assist manual transmission crossover powered strictly by me, my legs & level of endurance. Via electric can do 31 mph uphill!). I use the 120 vac plug-in charging unit that was provided by the battery dealer on Alibaba. It's easier to find 110-120v outlets and keep a set of US/Euro adapters handy. If you have the room consider carrying one or two e-trail bikes onboard for port-o-calls.
That would be awesome. With any performance boat, the challenge is trying to keep the boat weight light. So we do have to consider every toy we bring on, but that sounds like a cool ebike setup.
Awesome boat! Congrats on your determination and the excellent result ... ;-)
Thanks for putting this out there. I really like the idea of an electric boat. The dual generation from solar and using the engines as generators is just great. You're not getting much use of the engine generation, but on a long passage in some wind on a cloudy day I bet they will rock.
Hi would it be possible to share the excel sheet you have created?
What boat is it?
It's a custom boat.
Nice! Not too sure about your video format checked a few put and they're all great production quality but they also look more like infomercials, but if that's what your going for it's very nice. Good job.
Looking forward to the build info - why 3 years?
The boat turned out really nicely. We live off grid as are interested in buliding an electric cat one of days. Your so fortunate. How much did it end up costing you, if you dont nind me asking
Too much. ;-) But we went overboard with carbon and higher end electronics and parts for this size boat. You can imagine it costing a bit more than something like an Outremer 45 which can range well into 7 figures depending on options.
@@bluesaga thank you for the information. We are considering purchasing the maxx 42 kit since my husband is an engineer but if we do tgis we will defineatly go with electric motors. We have all off grid fully solar home and and golf cart with a lithium battery in wgich we use to go everywhere on the island we live on so for us its electric all the way and like you we like the quietness of electric enegry the low maintenence of those motors, along with the entire concept of solar.
@@sandralee5621 Did you check the young couple building a max in Annapolis? You may know them... believe they named themselves MJ sailing...
I just sunscribed to your channel. We are thinking of buliding a catamaran one day and i was wondering if we placed 2 electric motors wouls we be able to sail the world? I guess the trick is the panda generator. How mich diesal does that use and it is enough to sail under motor for as long as we would want to+
Yes, you can sail under genset with the electric motor. Our range is greater than 700nm for about 300l of diesel. For our boat, efficiency under motor is around 3nm/liter going about 4-5kts, but we generally sail. The main benefit of the system is recapturing energy while under sail or on sunny days for propulsion power.
Thanks, it would really help to see these figures on the screen. Bit hard to follow at times.
Thanks for the feedback.
@@bluesaga The cc work pretty well however I just found out. But yes, a few illustrations and figures would still help to get a better grasp of your system.
I think maybe if yoy spoke a luttle slower you could be better understood. Especially when you guve us technical information you would be surprised hoe much attention your viewers are placing on your videos! Sailing with elefteic motors is groudbreaking stuff and lots of peoole are interested in what your doing ans giw your doing it
