2.4 - The Largest True Sailing and Electric Yacht in the World? (Black Pearl)
The sailing yacht Black Pearl is the largest yacht in the world that can make passage only by the wind. It's amazing! But how does it work? Is it a green boat? Does it really generate hundreds of kilowatts while sailing under the wind? What is the rig type on this boat? How does it handle such massive sails? Does it have solar?
Want to find out? Watch the video and subscribe to get more information about electric boats.
Special thanks to captain Justin Christou and chief engineer Richard Tatlow.

    Was great to finally hear definitively why PV sails have yet to be implemented on her. Not bragging, but I had guessed it was to do with the interfaces between sail and power management system. It’s disappointing that the single transatlantic passage made so far was nowhere near as diesel free as predicted.

      We charge over five days to fill up propulsion batteries than make 10-15nm distance. We can do this indefinitely in the long summer days, but usually sail, so it's not necessary and we live off of the power generated by the solar.

    How much is the whole conversion? Due to sails shade , u lose 2/3 charging capacity from solar. What about when sails are not hoisted( not sure is the correct term)? Also, why not doing the silent-yach approach, not sals at all.?

    • @bluesaga
      @bluesaga 2 роки тому

      General rule of thumb for solar on bemini top of sailboats is roughly 1/3 of generation capability due to various shadows. However, when we are not sailing by the wind (no sails up), we move the boom (and anything we can) to reduce shadows on the solar in some thing we call solar sailing, which usually gets us about 2/3 of rate generation. In general, we can go 12-15nm every 5 days from sun power only, but it's way more efficient and usually faster to sail by the wind. We can sail with about 5kts of wind at a reasonable speed.

      Yes, you can sail under genset with the electric motor. Our range is greater than 700nm for about 300l of diesel. For our boat, efficiency under motor is around 3nm/liter going about 4-5kts, but we generally sail. The main benefit of the system is recapturing energy while under sail or on sunny days for propulsion power.
