On Native Ground Web, featuring Susan Billy.
This video features a group of contemporary Native American artists and cultural bearers who played a crucial role in curating the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian's George Gustav Heye (pronounced "High") Center in New York City in 1994.
Among these remarkable natives is Susan Billy of the Hopland Pomo tribe. Renowned worldwide for her exceptional artistry in weaving, beadwork, and other traditional crafts, Susan is the owner of Bead Fever, a successful Native-owned business in Ukiah, California

This 30-minute video, nearly six decades old, features Susie Andra Santiago Billy, and Elsie Allen from the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians. Samuel A. Barrett, a renowned UC Berkeley anthropology professor, dedicated his life to documenting Northern California Indigenous cultures, including my relatives in this footage. I’m deeply grateful to my cousin Susan Billy, a master weaver, curator of Nati...

Here is another video in the series. This one features several people making traditional seaweed, acorn mush, and abalone by the Creekside. It even features infants in cradle baskets! I would love to know the names of them, so they can be properly remembered and honored.

Here is another rare glimpse of an Elder’s meticulous preparation and cooking of acorn mush along the creek, following tribal traditions passed down for thousands of years. I would love to know the names of all the Pomo in this video series that I am posting to properly recognize and honor them. I am also very interested in talking with anybody who has connection or memories of these folks or h...

I am Cheyenne, the son of a stolen Cheyenne girl "re-educated" by the whites in their schools. One thing I've learned is no one people is evil. All are as treaturous as the next, all can be great friends or foes. In the world I am most often preceived white, at home on my 1250 acres I am Cheyenne in dress, customs, mannerisms, and Cheyenne is exclusively spoken. Among our 8 children, 33 grandchildren and 13 great gtands. We Cheyenne are not and never vanish from our earth. With every acre we buy we add more to tax exempt tribal lands. I have friends of every nationalety, race, color and creed. Some are better than others but such is life.

This video ran its course long ago, and I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve our people. I was recently asked about Tribal disenrollment. I'm against disenrollment used as punishment or for personal gain. Tribes should focus on growth and support, not shrinking and harming their members. The bigger question is why Tribes have these regulations in the first place.

Unfortunately, no soundtrack was created for these raw footage clips. I’m just so glad these reels were created as well as preserved to show us these time-honored traditions. I think there is still time to create a narrative that could accurately describe these activities from our Elders that still have this knowledge. I’d love to connect with some to get this started! Lenny.
