Love seeing happy babies nom nom
Hi, i did the mixture you suggested and on the first day i had him, he had a bit of cat food but that has been it and i have had him for 4 days. I am a bit worried as this is the first time i have had a skink. I have put crickets in an maybe he has had some of those but im not sure. Any suggestions, should i worry?
There’s a lot of factors to consider. But they can go months without food and sometimes take a full year to settle in. So nothings concerning that I’m aware of. Just have a conversation with the breeder you got your skink from and learn about the old diet and feeding schedule
@@davesskinks ok Thank you, they are quite hardy then, as I said I've had every reptile you can think of, just never a skink so I'm a bit of a novice
They’re not the greatest hunters. Never put live insects for food in the enclosure. They’ll escape, burrow, hide, poop, and their poop attracts mites. Then you want to evaluate temps and humidity. Every species is different. And age and old feeding schedule. An adult is only eating once a week. Also what hemisphere you are in. Lots of factors to consider. But 4 days is too small sample of a time to really evaluate. Just exhibit patience, young grasshopper
@davesskinks haha thank you, I have a eastern blue tongued skink, and he is literally 5 inches if that
So that small should be eating like 7 days a week. 4days off is not common. But there is a settling in period. You’re in Australia?
Thank you for the video, i have had reptiles for years but i purchased my very own blue tongue the other day and it is great advice, i will try this tomorrow.
Glad we could be of help 😁. Enjoy your skinkerdoodle
Oh nice. Easterns are more rare outside Australia. I like feeding around 10am, after their heat has been on a little bit but they have plenty of hot hours to digest. They also get tunnel vision and often overlook their food. Play around with times of feeding and how you go about feeding to see if that improves results
@@davesskinks thank you
Great video man just got my baby blue tongue today appreciate this video and your ideas
@@Nick-xg3dd glad I could help. Thanks for the love!
is it good using cocopeat and spring tail for Halmahera or Indonesian blue tongue skink ?
Unsure. I don’t know cocopeat and do not work with Halmahera. Where did you read cocopeat is good for Halms?
@@davesskinks Idk im still noob here, just asking for your advice
@@davesskinks why it isnt work ?
Yeah it’s just not a species I’ve ever worked with. There’s about 20 different types of blue tongues and we do not work with imports and other super high humidity species. I’d rather someone comment who has worked with cocopeat or Halmahera
I breed hognose but recently got my 1st blue tongue he's in a temp enclosure started building his permanent enclosure it's huge all my enclosures are bio firm believer in these and there fun so I'm about a month away from moving him need my plants and bugs to completely set before putting him in his new home I haven't handled him much only been a week I have heald and pet him but trying to build trust but awsome videos
Thanks mate! Appreciate the support. Good luck to you and your new blue tongue
Yup these last 3 games should if never happened so tired of hearing these guys talk about conner mcdavid its like dam stop sycking his balls its not the conner mcdavid show
U dont use uva/b for them?.or.is this setting enough
First and only tank ever to not use uvb. Seeing how it goes
Great video per usual Dave the only thing I would like to also add, my girl has gotten entangled with the fake plant leaves to the point where she couldn’t move, thankfully my wife was there to help her get out of it. Just a word of caution if anyone uses it
Great video! Loved how you broke down every product you used and how much to use. You get a 👍 from me!
🤙 alright, alright, alright
How can you tell what sex your skinks are? I just got a skink but have no idea if it's a male or female.
Oh it ain’t easy. They gotta be adults. If sperm plugs left in the tank, it’s male. After breeding, if babies squirt out the rear, that’s female. If not breeding, you can pay a vet to do a contrast dye X-ray to light up their genitalia
Fun video! Keep up the great #skink care
Your videos are awesome, thank you. <3 I've had my BTS for a few months now and info like this is invaluable. I live in a super isolated place without other reptile keepers so it's not like I can visit my local exotics shop for advice whenever I need to. Unfortunately, I think he picked up mites before I got him so we're battling those at the moment - it's been a steep learning curve!
Bless the internet bring us all together. I had mites once. And twice was enough. Get a quarantine tank. Paper towels. All decor goes to dishwasher on steam and high temp settings or trash. Completely sanitize old enclosure. Throw away all old substrate. Give reptile mite treatment in quarantine. If there’s one surviving mite before putting your skink back on fresh substrate, they will retake over in a couple months. I didn’t wait enough the first time and had mites a second. Awful.
@@davesskinks Thank you! He's on paper towels and his enclosure has been sanitised several times. I haven't seen a mite in two weeks, but I'm going to carry on treating him for two more just to be safe.
I really like your video and set up so please keep up the work 🥹
Thanks for the support. Will do!
Great video, lots of good info!
Thanks!
Hey I got a question, I’m getting a northern blue tongue next week. I’ve setup the cage for now it’s a baby and going to be in a 40 gallon reptile tank. I’ve got a 100 watt basking bulb and a 25 watt halogen mini dome. And I can’t seem to get the basking temperature right. I can get it up to 93 but no higher can you or anyone tell me what I can do.
I personally wouldn’t endorse this heat set up. I’d encourage reading over the heat section of our care guide on the main website www.davesskinks.com
Potato!
who is the gorgeous one with lighter colors?? I love the lack of darkness that usually is paired with bright colored skink. I LOVE the video btw. <3 Edit: forgot to put the time stamp oops, its at 11:57 .... if that morph or line has a name i'd love to know
You’re likely pointing out Kinsuki. Maybe Carl. Hopefully they pair this coming breeding season. You can see both of them on the Meet the Skinks tab of the main website
Thank you so much for your videos, they are a tremendous help! I picked up my first skink a month ago and I'm learning every day. Quality content like this is much appreciated.

@@davesskinks No, but thank you.
I just found your channel, subscribed! Hope you have more content coming. What are you doing for heat on the PVC enclosures? Love the slide out racks, btw!
Thanks for the sub! We only do a few UA-cam videos a year but try to make them as impactful as possible. The more subscribers and views I get, the more videos I’ll make. Appreciate your support. Please check over the heat and lighting sections of the care guide on our main website. We also have a few other UA-cam videos going over each enclosure set up you may like 😊
I love the set ups! 😍 I added isopods, 20 babies. And my viv is like 200 gallon and I don't know how on earth I would know if they're still alive or thriving. 😅
20 is a tad small of a colony to start. Not impossible to thrive though. Because you don’t know who is a boy or a girl or how close they are to breeding maturity, I recommend 30 to start, mix of sizes/ages. 50 quantity is better than that. 200 gal is such a large tank, it will take 100+ days until the population grows big enough to really notice. But if you flip over the cork and water bowls, you should spot some. Good luck!
Happy I found the video! :) BTW owner since one month. Yours are beautiful!
This is gorgeous set up. 😍 Appreciate the information 🖤✊🏽

Please reference Dan’s comment down below
@@davesskinks oh didnt see that, thanks!
All good 🤙
Hi I see towards the end of the video you have two skinks housed together Is this something you recommend could you tell me more about this
Def don’t recommend. They’re an anomaly couple. For the long-time experienced only. There’s a fully ready-to-go second enclosure, unused, in case they need to be separated at a moments notice. Please review our detailed care guide for more info on housing and cohabitation
@@davesskinks how'd you figure out they could be cohabitated? Have you noticed any interesting behavior from them that you haven't seen in your other solitary skinks?
@@Solaxer I do a lot of networking with keepers and breeders in Australia and Indonesia where the lizards are native to. But for this couple. They were put together for breeding but both stressed out after separation. So we kept them together even after the breeding season. But after a few months, the honeymoon phase was over and they’re each in their own enclosures now.
Might be able to find gromet covers for your bigger drilled holes. (Some might be bigger sizes than 7/8) Great job dave!
Yeah I had one goof up on the first hole. No mess ups after that, lol. Thankfully. Appreciate the love brother!
Is this the 66-4 or the 66-6 rack from freedom breeder? Looks sick btw skink set up looking real official in the rack with the lights
This is the 66-5. They don’t make it anymore I believe.
Appreciate the love!
hope you got more video's coming love the skink's
Thank you! More channel follows and video likes will certainly support this mission. Feel more than encouraged to share our channel with everyone you know
Hello where do you get your enclosures? I'm looking for something stackable for my five skinks
Custom make all my enclosures. These old Freedom Breeder racks, which they sadly don’t make anymore, I got used off somebody else in the hobby.
I love how in the beginning it looked like you were making a summoning ritual
I bake my substrate and all wooden items every clean. I use those big deep turkey large foil pans. You can get alot more in at once that way :) Oh and my wife appreciates it as there isn't dirt in the oven lol. Great video!
Good advice. Thanks! Happy wife = happy life
Did you use uv light and any heating device while keeping?
17 years, this is the first moment not using uv light and I’m only testing the waters on fully grown adults. I may play around further next year about uv options. The issue is height. You don’t want uv so close to their skink. 5/6” is just too little for the power reptile bulbs give off. But I’ll figure it out in time for another video 😉
What rack system in that, where did you get it from?
Just gotta stay tuned for the next video 😉
what is the size of the pvc enclosure
Each drawer is 55” x 33” x 9”
Sorry, that’s the rack size. The display enclosures are like 45” long, 23.5 deep, 13.75 tall
How often do you give meals to your babies/juveniles? Every day?
Good question! When they’re born it’s every day. I scale back to 6 times a week around 8 weeks old, and from there it’s a very gradual decrease in total feedings until they’re 3 years old and it’s just once a week from that point on. When they’re babies, I feed meals the size of their belly. And as they move towards adult size, I gradually change the meal size rival their head around 3 years old as well. Hope this helps. We’ve got a detailed care guide on the main website with additional info
@@davesskinks Thank you for the quick response. 😊
Francisco has eaten 60/40 veggies since adulthood
Great video Dave. Do you cook the meat before you feed? BTW. Our BTS is doing great. He (We think he). Is going crazy now to get out of the enclosure and roam. Very fun little guy.
Thanks for the compliment Cat Man! Really depends on the meat, quality and where I’m getting it from. These particular meats were used super fresh and completely raw. There will be another feeding video in a week or so. Ultimately, their stomachs have not evolved for cooked food so it is more challenging for them to digest, but bacteria can plague any animal so it’s a toss up. If you feel the meat is safe, keep it raw. If you’re worried, cook. Boy skinks do the most movement in the wild, known to walk 15 city blocks in a day. If you can let them out to exercise they’ll certainly appreciate it.
Where are you from
Shee-kahgo, Illinois. The Windy City of brotherly love
@@davesskinks oh. Just asked because I live in Croatia and I wondered if you were offering baby skinks in Europe. Sorry
All good brother. For future reference the location is embedded into the video near the top. But the US laws stink for shipping Australian-native species overseas. You’ve got to go through a Canadian intermediary. So I want to say you’re looking close to $1000 US all said and done to get it to your door before the cost of the lizard itself. So we can do it, I have people in Canada who can help, but it’s obviously not cost effective and high risk shipping to Canada, then the UK, then to Croatia as a baby in a box
How much are you selling them for and what's your location.
I’m out of Chicago but I can ship anywhere overnight in the continental 48 US. I have a couple babies available on the site now. Uploading a few more this weekend and many more next weekend when the last northern litter finishes shedding. Bruh I heard you can’t give bts lizards potatoe
No doubt it’s dangers consumed regularly or in large quantities. Keeping variety in the diet is great, however you go about doing it. That one little potato spread out over the entire meal, divided by individual servings, every once in a while shouldn’t be concerning unless there’s other factors to consider. We have a full list of foods that are best, still good, and the few that are dangerous on the main website www.DavesSkinks.com/care

What is the tail trick? What does it hopefully prove?
When a female is horny you can lightly rub or scratch their tail and it waves. If they are gravid when you do this they actually raise their tail like they are going to expel a baby. It does not always work but I have yet to see a female do this who is not gravid.
