We were all catholic before Rome made Christianity the state religion. We are still catholic, but not Roman Catholic. Rome co-opted Christianity and made it the state religion for political purposes. The Church of Rome calls itself catholic, but it is viewed by most other Catholics aka, other Christians as an apostate church.
