Hi from Canada 🍁. I'm in St. Catharines (near Niagara Falls). Thank you for this. Some nitpicky comments (to counter the myths that our federal government tells the tourists): 0:35 Toque - the vowel is pronounced like "toot". 2:30 While English and French are "official languages coast-to-coast, in most provinces people speak mostly English (with diverse languages in the big cities, and very limited French-speaking pockets); and in Quebec they speak mostly French. 3:08 4 of the 5 Great Lakes are shared between Canada and USA (and Lake Michigan is entirely within USA). 3:37 Sports: Soccer remains the most played sport, in schoolgrounds and organized leagues. Very few people play lacrosse, it is sort of a niche sport, maybe akin to polo's status in UK. Plenty of baseball/softball and football and basketball. 4:20 "Canada is a melting pot" - sort of. Lots of people hold on to the culture from their old country, so sometimes it seems more like a "patchwork" than a "melting pot". Here in St. Catharines, for example, there are decades-old pockets of Polish and Ukrainian. In Toronto: Italian, Greek, Ukrainian, Russian, East Indian, Chinese, lots more. There is an annual Caribbean festival, lots of black people that immigrated from various Caribbean islands. Like the United Nations. 4:45 While the UGLY RED maple leaf has been on our flag since the 1960s, the maple leaf was a national symbol long before. The unofficial national anthem for many decades was _The Maple Leaf Forever_ , written in 1867. 4:58 In nature, the maple *_tree_* is dominant in only portions of eastern Canada - the southern parts of Ontario and Quebec, and in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and P.E.I. 6:08 Maple syrup: yes. My father, growing up on a farm in the 1930s, would go out to the shed each spring morning, to the barrel of maple sap, and break off chunks from the solid sugar "cake" that had formed on top, for the family to put on their breakfast cereal. 7:02 Beyond peacekeeping, we are proud of the Canadian military's fighting record and reputation. From the War of 1812 to the war in Afghanistan. 8:28 Yes. But, Canada's health care system is financially unsustainable. Since it came in, neither the federal government nor the provincial governments can balance their budgets. Changes coming. 9:00 The Trans Canada Highway is mostly a marketing slogan, a brand. *_Provinces_* maintain their roads and highways. The Trans Canada Highway is manifested merely by the signs that claim, "Trans Canada Highway", it has very little underlying federal funding - only for certain major construction projects. 10:45 Natural resources: I would also include our agriculture sector. We have huge grain exports - wheat, canola, soybeans and corn - and smaller outputs from a hundred crops and farm animals. Beyond natural resources, we also have healthy end-to-end industry in all industrial sectors (although it has shrunk since the 1970s, as we have been importing progressively more from various east Asian countries). MORE FACTS: A. While Canada is huge, 85% of people live within 100 miles of our southern (U.S.) border, where the climate is least harsh, and the farming is good. Most people live in the "big cities". B. For most provinces, most of their out-of-province trade is with the adjacent U.S. states - the pattern is mostly north-south (not east-west to other provinces). And in most respects, Canadian cultural and industrial and agricultural patterns align very closely with the adjacent U.S. state. So, - southern Ontario is a lot like upstate New York and Michigan - northern Ontario is a lot like Minnesota C. Canada is bound to America economically. When people in Toronto want to "make it big", they think of New York, Washington and Los Angeles - just like the people in Chicago do! Any Canadian that emigrates to USA for a job is a success. I could list people in every industry, that Americans think of as their own... Elizabeth Arden, Alexander Graham Bell, William Shatner...🍁
