    Never got around to thank you, I forgot, but here I am. In early 2023, I had the dreaded DTCs and took apart the front of the engine to see a worn balance shaft. Thanks to you I kept my 235.000 km M272 on the road and it now has 287.000 km, it has brought me and my family to Bulgaria and back, my best friend and I to England multiple times and soon, my girlfriend and I to Morocco. I am now watching your video again because I need to replace the right intake cam gear. My memories were a bit cloudy but your video has brought them all back and I will now be able to confidently take on the job. Thanks Mr Padilla !! :D

    BECAREFUL, THE ONES WITHOUT THE ARROW ARE WHERE THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE, IT’S AN UPDATED DESIGN TO MIMIC THE “L” DO NOT PUT THE COPPER LINK AHEAD OF THE LETTER R IF IT DOES NOT HAVE AN ARROW, I am currently doing this fix and had to verify multiple times to get it down correctly, rotated the engine multiple times, adjusted the cams and gears multiple times to make sure and put tension on the tensioner to triple check with and without timing cover at the key and 40 degrees, I am doing this on an M273 v8 5.5L from 2007.

When I saw another video by Peter Finn the car doctor it was a different type of filter whereas the one you're displaying is the type I want. Just need the how-to for a 2001 Toyota Corolla.

      The one in Peter's video is the 'filter sock' or a screen. Similar to the oil pickup tube screen. The one in my video is the actual filter and you can get the instructions from Toyotas website but you will have to pay for a daily, week, monthly or yearly subscription. Paywalls everywhere.

Personally, I would invest in a arbor press if you already don't have one. But, I used 8d nails to lock the cam sprockets and studs as alignment dowels for the timing cover. The only tool I needed to buy was an swiveled e8 on a 1/4 drive. Everything else is up to your skill level. Hone your skills or pay the professionals is your insecure.

      Man you are awesome, thank you for replying!! Couple of last questions if you may! I have the M273 engine with the idler sprocket instead of the balance shaft. I have the 4 markings on the chain for each sprocket, the one by the idler gear I can’t find anything to line it up to on the gear itself. It is just touching the idler gear though, is that good enough? And when you assembled the engine, you connected the chain to the crankshaft gear and then installed the timing cover. When moving the chain up top to line up the links on each sprocket. How would verify that the chain is still connected on crankshaft gear in the right place and has not moved?

    • @eddiepadilla1078
      @eddiepadilla1078 2 роки тому

      @@mohamedzeineldin4998 if you have an idler sprocket and no mass to counterbalance then the idler is there only to help direct the chain and doesn't need to be timed. You will need to rotate the engine 2 complete revolutions and recheck the all the timing marks. You can still see the chain with the timing cover installed as long as the harmonic balancer is not installed.

      Its hard to say without having tools on the vehicle but it sounds like your describing 1) timing issue or 2) a fuel filter issue. • @eddiepadilla1078
      @eddiepadilla1078 2 роки тому

      Yes, you can pressurize the cylinders with air to hold the valves in-place as you replace the stem seals but I would not exceed 5 psi if you do that. Before you go that route you what to check your compression first to ensure you dont have blowby that is leaking oil into your intake as leaky stem seals typically manifest as a blue tined smoke exiting the exhaust, whereas, excessive blowby will manifest as excessive oil in the intake/pcv system. Hope this helps.

    Wow. I replaced a clutch in a Fiat Spyder when I was a kid and ah remember that the lowest point on that car was the oil pan only less than a foot from concrete. That was pretty simple but need to jack the engine up a bit to do it. This process is clearly beyond my tolerance level. It seems like the M272 is of poor design. Why would the chain hang in my opinion? The chain needs to react to stressors I assume but keeping it inline per a lifecycle of an engine seems poor design per my take on it. Yes, I have the M272 balance shaft repair per 77K miles on my SLK 350. I'm hoping MBUSA will do something. Its clearly a problem with that engine at that time. A class action suit was launched that paid for most repairs but I'm beyond the 10 year mark but with 77K miles. A 60K car should not be toast at 77K miles. It just seems to me that replacing the balance shaft would not repair damage made by metal fragments circulating throughout the engine. MB also suggested the same when I learned of the class action effort years ago. A new engine would be needed. They also suggested that we do not see many of those models around anymore.

  • @WalterWeakley
    @WalterWeakley 3 роки тому

    100 000? i don't think so. these engines on the video are V6 engines, they need replacement sprockets but not the V8 .R172 engines. these V6 engines are problematic yes. M152 and M157 don't need that sprocket and chain replacement that often. The Mercedes-Benz M273 engine is a V8 automobile piston engine family used in the 2000s. It was based on the similar M272 V6 introduced in 2004.

    Why do you put the timing cover on before the cam gears?

    • @eddiepadilla1078
      @eddiepadilla1078 3 роки тому

      It can be a bit difficult if you tried to install the cover without the gears because the chain gets in the way and the last thing you want is a lightly oiled chain touching a clean, degrease mating surface with a bead of silicone--good way to compromise your gasket if not.

  • @Lukasz_Mazur_1999
    @Lukasz_Mazur_1999 3 роки тому

    Thanks for showing the timing procedure. In M273 V8 engine there is no blance shaft because there is no need of balancin cross plane V8 with natural 90degree V angle, int this place there is only gear that tennsions timing chain. The balance shaft is only in M272 V6 engines whres Mercedes applied unnaturla V angle 90 degree and too soft steel for timming gears

    • @existentiallychallenged5068
      @existentiallychallenged5068 2 роки тому

      That is true, but the 273 V8 has an “idler gear” in the same location (just the sprocket without the internal balance shaft), which suffered from the same wear issue as the balance shaft sprocket. Sadly, since it’s based on the 272 V6, the same thing happens when it fails, the chain can skip, stretch, and wreck the valve train.

    • @defalt45
      @defalt45 Рік тому

      @@existentiallychallenged5068 Exactly. M273 is just M272 with 2 extra cylinders. There was no inherent need for the idler gear, but not putting one would have needed designing a whole new engine
