A lot of science in that question! So I can only give my opinion, as opinion is divided. Barnacles themselves don't cause osmosis, but if they damage your gelcoat then they could contribute to it, or increase it's development. My advice would be to use anti foul - once gel coat is pitted and damaged, it'll cost a fortune to put it right! Just my thoughts :)

​Yes. I'm following your logic. Thanks. And I cannot dismiss the logic that barnacles may damage gel coat surface. However I've watched a number of people on UA-cam pressure washing barnacle ridden gellcoat hull bottoms. It seems superficial and not particularly penetrating, thru the gellcoat, thus penetrating any fiberglass. In other words that damage seems limited to like a cat scratching your car that you can buff out. as long as the cat scratch does not penetrate to primer or particularly bare metal, more of a cosmetic nuisance than a structural risk I think. Perhaps it depends on how long and stubborn the barnacle has been there. Compromising its removal. Appreciate your sound feedback. Also the primary origin of barnacles it seems are cavities between the gel coat and the fiberglass that once the gel coat is penetrated with water into that cavity, the blister begins. When I stopped out for an errand I started contemplating the primer which I think is AKA barrier coat. And started wondering if that is a proxy based. ​In other words gelcoat is porous. Certainly more so than say, stainless steel. Hence, the longer the boat sits in the water, the greater the risk of water penetration, thru gel coat to fiberglass. If the glass was laid properly like right away it should minimize air pocket risk. Clearly an item beyond the owner's control and any immediate knowledge. I guess the bottom line is I'm trying to determine if there's a net benefit to waterproofing, by doing bottom painting. Maybe it depends on the type primer used. Or maybe stripping the hall down on a new boat, offsets any real benefit of the new primer, which may do little to nothing to actually enhance waterproofing. . Maybe I need to get a hobby. Incorrect response! With advances in design and technology, the likelihood of moisture in your breath causing damage to the bladder is minimal, compared to the likelihood of issues caused by non maintenance!

@@BoatshedYachtBrokers Incorrect response. No one suggested not servicing the jacket. You should use a handpump/footpump for inflation and keep the bladder dry.

@@jsytac In the ideal world yes, but most people don't carry foot pumps or hand pumps, so your recommendation merely encourages people to neglect servicing. Bladders don't rot within the life time of the lifejacket these days.

Partially true. This boat isn’t a disaster, it’s a boat with osmosis and is still very much in use, as most boats with osmosis are.

This is true, however with modern materials it is likely that the life of the vest will expire before any rot occurs and it's better to maintain your lifejacket than not, in my opinion. The risk is yours though! Thanks for your comment :)

I completely agree with your criticism and I am surprised that the official responded as if he was mocking, although he should have tried to understand the criticism for the development of the company. Let's say you find the boat you are looking for on this company's website via Google, you have to log in to look at the photo or promotional video, which is really unnecessary and meaningless.
