Norm Breyfogle: BEST bat-artist of 1990's BATMANIA!
August- my book- is here: kck.st/46aRfcY
Check out my other comics, many of them Batman inspired, here: linktr.ee/augustcomic
Norm Breyfogle redesigned Robin when he was 14- but he thought he could do better. Years later, he got a second chance.
This vid highlights the work of Norm Breyfogle. I can't overstate how much his work meant to me as a kid who wanted to be an artist. Looking back at his runs, it was the perfect look for the time. His Batman looked like it could have someday been Frank Miler and Klaus Janson's version of the character... while still seeming like it was the Neal Adams or Jim Aparo version of the Caped Crusader. Breyfogle's Batman was the best compiled version of everything that had come before. And honestly, I think it was as dynamic and vivid as anything that has come since. It was a blast to put together a mini documentary with some hi-res examples of his art. I hope you enjoy it- and I REALLY hope you'll track down some of his work!

    In Sweden he's called "Den Vandrande Vålnaden" which means something like "The wandering wraith" it just sounds cooler than ghost who walks. Its alliterative He's also dark blue due to a lack of purple ink at the time. Which makes him look more intimidating and is better camouflage. I think it actually ended up making him better. Also the legacy thing is great with all the historical settings. I think he needs some competently made movies. They could add some realism and sensitivity towards the african setting and how they portray the tribesmen. Id like a movie set during historical periods. I remember reading one where he was protecting huguenots from persecution in france and another one where he mets Rene Descartes in Sweden. There's just so many possibilities with the character.

I now have a, Slightly Fudged 31 member Justice Society in Action Figures. Adams' version is definitely a big step in Batman's visual evolution- and I'm being a little hyperbolic with my title. But Rogers' run really solidified the character and Gotham. Adams' batman output was a lot spottier than I'd thought before looking into it- my take is that rogers and englehart took a lot of what they'd seen about batman in the late 60s and early 70s, how it gad started to move away from camp, and formalized that into the approach to the character that was the blueprint until Miller came along.

    I really like Marshall Rogers' work, but he didn't single-handedly turn Batman back into a dark figure. That got started when Editor Julius Schwartz started the "new look" Batman, with more down-to-earth stories and art by Carmine Infantino. It got serious when Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams started doing their infrequent Batman stories, with others like Frank Robbins, Irv Novick, Jim Aparo, Walt Simonson, Michael Golden, Ernie Chua, and others trying to continue down the serious, Dark Knight path. That was all from the late 60s and early 70s. So Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers came along rather late in the game, even if what they did was quite good!

    • @benjaminmorsecomicbookarti3793
      @benjaminmorsecomicbookarti3793 3 місяці тому

      I totally agree with what you're saying- the move towards the darker Batman started even in the early 60s, and I'm being a little hyperbolic with my title. But it kind of came out of the research I did on this. The first thing I think of as far as redfining Batman's world in the 70's is Adams and O'Neil- but their output was a lot spottier (in terms of timing, not quality, of course!) than I realized. They had a great stories here and there, but jumped around a lot, and it wasn't really a "run" that built up momentum. And Aparo- probably my favorite Bat-artist- was still on Brave and Bold for such a long stretch, not really on one of the Batman flagships. I'd never been a big Rogers/Englehart fan as a kid, and their run certainly didn't last that long- but it was always something I'd read about as what other teams looked at as a good baseline for the 70s "darker" Batman. But when I finally checked it out a few years ago, I can see what the fuss was about- it was seemed like it was kind of the first time all the cool things that had been happening with the character post Adam West came together, both in art and writing tone, and really took shape over a few arcs. Thanks for your comment- and some of those artists who you listed will definitely be featured in a new video soon!

      Yeah- everybody has their favorite artists in terms of style or storytelling, but it's always seemed like these were the perfect versions of DC's heroes!

      There are many others I can mention in the same league: George Pérez, Ramona Fradon (in the Super Friends comics and design for the cartoon) and the current Jorge Jiménez.

      @@justicierodelaliga I really don´t know what people sees on Jimenez art. It´s my personal opinion, of course. I´ll say one of the best DC comics artist right now and for the last 10 years, is Ivan Reis.

    Thanks so much for this! Love Garcia-Lopez’s art. Most amazing observation made about his Superman: After Christopher Reeve successfully played Superman people started commenting that Garcia-Lopez was modeling his Superman after Reeve…. until someone pointed out that Garcia-Lopez’s drew Superman in his comics with that same likeness years before Reeves movie! Garcia-Lopez really understands Superman! Lastly picked up We are Scarlett Twilight- loved it. Looking forward to the sequel!

      Yeah, his Superman has yet to be matched. Somehow it looks like every good live action version of Superman at the same time- total perfection! And thanks so much for checking out Scarlet Twilight! Working on the sequel now!
