Tech Tip Tuesday - Rappel Trick for a Single Strand
What if you have one atc and one gri gri? Or what if you are in a team of 3 and have a lot of rappels and want an efficient and safe system for rappelling? Or maybe you just prefer to rappel on a gri gri (like me).
If one person pre-rigs the rappel (which is almost always a good idea so you can check each other's systems) with an atc AND a friction hitch (the friction hitch is NECESSARY to lock the strands from slipping), you can rappel on a single strand below them. The atc and friction hitch make it so the rope won't slide through when weighting a single strand.
This is also an efficient rappel set up for teams of 3. Two people can rappel on a gri gri and "simul rappel" without any need to communicate weighting and unweighting since it essentially serves as two fixed lines. Then the third person (first person to pre-rig) can come down last with atc and friction hitch.

Tech Tip Tuesday: How to Fix a Broken Cam Wire

For today's Sunrise Mindset Tech Tip Tuesday video I show you how to use .8mm welding wire and a pair of pliers to fix a broken cam wire. The process is not super easy, and expect it to take longer than you think, but it's great to be able to DIY fix a cam! Unfortunately my phone stopped recording during the meat of the fix, so you don't get to see that part. Basically the steps are: 1. remove ...

North Six Shooter Musical Mission with Three French and an American

These four: Aurelia, Chloe, Polo and Becca had a mission in mind: Play music on the top of the North Six Shooter tower in Indian Creek, Utah. The vision initially involved getting to climb a stellar classic route, but they soon realized that getting to the top before sunset was more of a priority than climbing the route in any respectable style, so, naturally, with three French and only one Ame...

Endo Valley Bouldering: MS-13 Training Arete v8

Somehow, Endo Valley provided tank top sending temps in December this season (2017)! Last season I spent about 5 sessions on this climb. The first two sessions I couldn't get the first move. I had only stuck the last move twice before this day. With some strategy and psych, I was able to pull it together for my second send of the grade! For fun (and for another video angle) I tried it again fro...

I dropped my ATC on Rewritten so I belayed on a munter hitch for the Bastille Crack. It was a tough day, p...

So you use hip-hop from black culture and not even putting women of color in your move, it's so disappointing ... I'm speechless... that's call appropriation. It's sad because there are so many rad women of color that would've been soooooo good in there you can't just take something, appropriating it for your own sake. oh seeing a two-second cut of a black man sitting does not validate the video. You know the outdoor is so discriminatory still. I love climbing but representation is a big issue...then pretending it's for alllllll women... it's really not. It's only for the white female gaze, unfortunately. It's made to entertain the white gaze nothing more. People need to wake up, educate your self ask multiple athletes from the diversity what they think, not just your inner circle. I' m so disappointed. I can't wait to see more videos that actually use collaboration with the community of the country you're in, with the people you're taking the culture of... black, brown, and indigenous bodies are not just props to support what you doing. we are part of this community too. It's our space too. Also, I follow tons of black, brown, and indigenous female climbers if you need inspiration.

I've been struggling with whether or not to write this post, and can't find a place to message the creators privately, but I feel there may be some inadvertent appropriation in the video. As I watched this in a theater filled with other privileged white people, I couldn't help but cringe a little. I left the theater feeling pretty weird and conflicted about this film, and was unsure if I was being 'too sensitive'. I finally ended up showing it to a few friends of color and having a discussion with them about it, where we all eventually agreed that the video showed appreciation of hip hop, there was also some appropriation and mocking of hip hop and black culture. It seems the women are being 'ironic', but it's not okay poke fun at and to be ironic about other people's cultures. I know it's very uncomfortable to recognize when we make mistakes that could be interpreted as a form of racism, but it's something we need to acknowledge in the outdoor community, and in the country generally. The outdoor community already suffers from a lack of diversity and high barrier of entry for minorities, and things like this may turn off interested people of color. I fully understand that isn't the intention here, but we really need to be careful about how we portray ourselves, and think about how to be as inclusive as possible. I found the entire No Mans Land film festival to be catered toward white women with the exception of the film on the amputee. Maybe I am being too sensitive, but if I see the film this way and felt slightly uncomfortable watching it as a white person, I'm sure there are others who feel similarly. I'm not trying to be critical, but rather to point out that this could be misinterpreted.

Hey M. Rae DeVan, thanks for your thoughtful comment and I apologize for the delayed response. I can understand that you felt some discomfort watching a "hip hop" film featuring mostly people with white skin in a theater of people with mostly white skin and I appreciate that this turned into a bigger conversation for you. While it can be uncomfortable to face the fact that our outdoor culture is predominantly made up of "privileged white people," this is the reality and a number of people are putting in valiant effort to change that and help the adventure world to feel more inclusive. I had a vision for this film to be cutting edge in that respect, to represent a greater scale of diversity, but it proved to be quite challenging to get anyone to volunteer to dance the wiggle dance for hours on a cold day, let alone a group with a broad range of skin color diversity. (I am happy to say that there is still a wide range of cultural diversity represented in the film). I'm sorry that you and your friends interpreted some aspects of the film as "mockery" or "poking fun" at hip hop culture, as this was not the intention. My relationship with hip hop culture roots in my love of beatboxing and freestyle circles and the philosophy of authentic self expression and progressive creativity that I see come out from the hundreds of freestyle circles I have been part of over the years. Hip hop is evolving, our outdoor culture is evolving and we are evolving as individuals, nothing stays the same (hopefully). While hip hop culture did originate through people of color, this does not mean that hip hop must stay in this place. I was intentional about calling awareness to the roots of hip hop culture in the lyrics "Art outsmarted entropy and the darkness of hearts played a part in destiny staking claim on the legacy of hip hop's name" -- This is in reference to gang violence in the Bronx being transformed into dance battles (art/creative expression taking the place of chaos and destruction) and it being the destiny of hip hop to continue to provide spaces for people to feel that they can be themselves, whatever that look likes. "Now our voices mix and join in formless chorus, rhythmic lore" -- i.e. now, regardless of where we come from, if we feel that music/rhythm moves through us, we can come together and create something new. Hip hop along with a lot of music and creative culture is built upon borrowed ideas, samples, etc. and while it might feel icky that so often white people are borrowing from the creations of people of color, this is part of how art progresses and always has and I'm sorry if it feels like it represents negative aspects of cultural appropriation. This film was a dream project for myself, to channel the inspiration I gain from rock climbing and wild outdoor spaces into my love of beatboxing and wordplay in community collaboration, providing a space for other people (mostly women) in this outdoor culture to share talents and expression together. It was an extremely low budget film made mostly through volunteer hours with folks who connected to the idea and message. Henna and I plan to continue making creative rap music video adventure films together and we are very open to further discussion about how to make films that feel more inclusive and less offensive as our aim is obviously not to be racist, but rather to create something that feels true to us. It is understandable that you are being extra sensitive to these ideas in a time when our outdoor culture is hyperfocused on diversity and it's easier to pinpoint how things lack diversity than how they include it. Sometimes, though, I think it's important to let the down the defense and just enjoy what some passionate people have created. I hope this clarifies some of your concerns and I am open to discussing more. :)
