DivSkip- Helping Melodies Too!
A composition inspired by Steve Reich's approach exploring the phase relationships. All melodies were created from a clock that was out of sync from an oscillator, and a barrage of rhythmic processing from the DivSkip including Euclidean based rhythm pattern providing further division, and a few knob turns here and there for live performance.
Performance of course features the amazing DivSkip by DivKid and Making Sound Machines, as well as Cal Synth's Changes (Mutable Stages) running the Qiemem firmware with some of the deeper functions. AISynthesis Oscillators, Befaco Oneiroi, Beats, Alps, and Typhoon were also used heavily.
A quick shout out to all the amazing people at Knobcon2024, who have been a big inspiration the last month!

Mylar Melodies is constantly talking about pushing ourselves to find out own limitations through practice, as opposed to just buying (Or melting lead into) a new module. I am soldering most of a 4x104 Eurorack Synth, this is the first of my check in sessions- What do I really need, What is wasted space, What do I need to get better at? This is my reaction to April's composition challenge set by Omri @OmriCohen-Music Stereo Listening highly recommenced! This is my reaction to March's composition challenge set by Omri @OmriCohen-Music - focusing on the words Defeated, Earthy, Unwieldy. Neapolitan, dark and heavy. I really enjoy out of sync/phase relationships between patterns. Really beautiful moments emerge, develop, then disappear, only for some time to pass before it seems to latch onto something else for a bit.
That is a great way of describing things! It is nice to have another performance oriented tool that quickly helps uncover these patterns, and snap back to earlier ones if so desired!
Thats ultra complex!!
Very cool reverberations ❤
Great highlight reel!
Such an inspiring weekend! Thanks for taking time to perform and talk about your setups.. I am seriously loving the Xer Mixa... Side note, I have heard multiple people talk about your magical set last Thursday night - and hope it gets shared sometime!
@@manweilermusic I just posted the Knobcon set from the church: ua-cam.com/video/z34jiCOrYF8/v-deo.htmlsi=c65zXqK3ko5nxkU2
Great meeting you - thanks for checking out our new pedal!!
Dude! That sweet first power up after this build is nerve destroying isn’t it? But seems you got the goods done, really happy to see I wasn’t the only multiple day builders 👍 Heck of a build, 1100 solder pads is not a small deal. Still getting to grips with the looper, seems there must be a knack I’m not yet getting
Absolutely! I used my fair share of braided copper on this one.. Mainly for when my tip wandered into unsettled pad territory. Putting in a row of headers is so much easier when one of the holes hasn't be closed up accidentally. It is taking musical restraint to not turn all the knobs at once.. it is so gratifying. I would love to hear your creations with this! 1100???? 1100 PADS?? HA glad I didn't count first :) I did go over with a magnifier 5 or 6 times from both sides before closing her up and turning her on. so paranoid that I had a bridge or missed resistor someplace.
@@manweilermusic The old desolder pump was my trusty friend, I blindly followed the iBOM thinking it had the same order of resistor placement but nope, no I mixed up a whole bunch of those lol. I really ought to pop some music up on here, ok will do
I’m going to pick both up one day. I only have a DFAM atm and that is really unique and amazing for sounds
When you do, make sure you share your creations!
👌
Love the wackiness. You might like some of our releases. eclectic and avant garde.
Nice, I've been thinking about getting out the violin too, to mix with synths. Sounds great.
yea!
Loving the sounds.
Thanks so much!
so, can you tell us what it is in the MOOD that you're sequencing with the SQ-1? you've gotten some lovely results here. also... I'd love it if, for this sort of vid, it was just MOOD so that we can really get a solid sense of what it, & the sequenced aspects of it, are up to. ya know wadda mean?
@fallprecauxionsmusic So happy to hear you enjoyed this! Let me try to do a followup video and isolate sounds with some explanation, as there are multiple ways to sequence the mood with external sources (Joel & Team did a heck of a job with the internal LFO though!)- You are correct in hearing - I have multiple parameters being controlled here- tuning it is a bit more in depth than a short text response field.... and some controllers on the market will damage Chase Bliss with their control voltage - (the SQ-1 has the potential to if it is not set properly) but at around $100 it is an AMAZING little sequencer... So I do want to attach the proper warnings and "what I learned" as well to get these sounds
I should also note- the original intent of this video was "document composing to remember what I did." It ended up a different direction than intended once I started turning knobs :). I occasionally post some of those to my channel in their raw form as snapshots/ diary entries into my process-
aaah... video documentation of the composition process, when that process is gear-centric... that is a brilliant idea!! I love it!!
this was confusing to me. is there not an actual setting that can be used to fix latency? I have harmony parts that does not line up.
I don't know if they have added any new features. The last time I used the program one needed to manually move blocks over by the latency in the system.
Never heard NURBS ''interpreted'' in such an interesting way!
I have a YEV-15 too. Can you post the patch for this?
Dan, awesome to hear! I have a video coming down the pipeline with a few things simplified on how I tune Granular effects like this for Pizz and Arco, that will be a little more friendly to people's CPUs. How much experience do you have with particle effects?
@@manweilermusic I love granular effects, not sure I know what particle effects are. I'll keep an eye out for your video. I tried building some of this patch by hand just by looking at what's on the screen but I couldn't get any sound when patching the violin into the IN L input of Clouds. That's why I would love to see the patch...
@@dantenenbaum6288 My bad- I was typing before my coffee kicked in. Granular. :) What I have coming down the pipeline is a look at not just an exact copy of this (which you could do with what I am working on), but a view under the hood into how I look at Clouds to get these types of effects on violin, and a few more very nice symphonic sounds... by adjusting several of the control parameters. I also have been leaning pretty heavily on Grayscale's Supercell module recently instead of the Audible instruments clone. - I find it has a bit more gain and control- with more breakout control of Émilie Gillet's internal functions... I will likely release a patch storage patch with that video! Do you have a place where your Modular Violin music can be heard? There are not too many of us out here that combine both mediums!
@@manweilermusic I'm still in the exploration phase with modular, so nothing to release yet. I have also been enjoying Supercell. Looking forward to seeing your patch!

What a beautiful and creative use of the VCV language.
Thanks so much!
Very well explain I've follow along with a quick Surge FM3 x Muxlicer sequence. that was lot of fun. I did some kind of glitch sound with the Simpliciter but the trick of quantize on the fourth and the fifth changed everything. Thanks for sharing!
So glad that helped out! I would love to hear what you end up coming up with.
@@manweilermusic hehe I've actually put a vid online yesterday directly inspired from yours ua-cam.com/video/sfGmCnODYUI/v-deo.html
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. So much great nysthi stuff but its often a little unclear how to use.
Thanks so much, and Agreed! I seem to always find a new hidden functions or controls every time I dig in. There are many parts of many of the module collections or control areas I haven't gotten to deciphering yet... The more time I spend with them the more I fall in love with them though!
Great integration of all these elements.
Thanks so much, I am glad you enjoyed listening!
Great fx chain, thanks for sharing! I need to start experimenting more with processing incoming audio in vcv
Thanks so much! I am working on several videos aimed at helping getting bowed string players into this space, and how to process signal chains! VCV is such a great creative tool beyond the amazing things it does with synth sounds!
That’s really cool! Outstanding explanations, too.
Thanks Matt!
Sounds pretty good. How are you triggering Simpliciter, or is it just looping and you're modulating the start and end points? I've made similar patches for guitar, but found I was getting a lot of clicks. Can't quite see what's going on in the patch 😉
Lots of good questions Virtual Modular, it is slightly complicated for a comment thread response...... I don't hide my patch cable to make it hard to follow- but keep around 20% opacicity to keep my sanity. I also am loving the monochromatic look, but realize it is hard to trace things... Let me try to do a walk through on how this patch was built, and post hopefully this weekend- with full cable views. In the mean time.... 99% of the clicks I have are dealt with in 2 ways 1- right click in Simpliciter, got to FADE IN-OUT MODES, check both fade in, and fade out. Secondly, on the output portion (upper right of the module) you will see a click knob. I generally turn that pretty aggressively. Let me know if that helps! I normally use this technique for live performance, as opposed to editing samples... but since I had both hands busy- and my foot controller wasn't hooked up, it was easier to have a looped sample for this video.
@Virtual Modular I posted a followup video w/ cables in view! ua-cam.com/video/-AzRv9XmZaA/v-deo.html
@@manweilermusic thanks, watching that now 👍
@@VirtualModular Does that answer all of you questions/ solve all of your current issues? This module is such a creative powerhouse! Amazing work by NYSTHI
@@manweilermusic yes, nice tutorial! Are you on Mac or Windows? I've found that as soon as I connect the record trigger input, it completely bombs rack. Nothing in the VCV log, but Windows event viewer shows Nysthi having an application crash. I'll have to fire up v1.6 to experiment further...
What electric violin do you use?
Brian, thanks for watching! In this Video I am using a Yamaha YEV-4. I use several different electrics, but tend to spend most of my time on 5- 6 string string electrics (Yamaha YEV-5, GlasserNY 5 string, Mark Wood Viper 6 string). If you are interested, check out my friends page at @ElectricViolinShop. Matt has tons of great info on this electric violin, and tons of comparison and info videos for instruments like it!
Is that your MuRF patch on the Zoia?
Rob, Good catch! :) Yep- this is my standard MuRF clone running in Stereo (updated and based on viniciusnisi's Murf 2.0 and tuned to match the murf) - I tried the Wide frequencies and the Bass frequencies- but the balance was not where I wanted it to be. I need to send you my updated versions of all 3! Midi tap tempo is included now.
Such awesome atmosphere on this piece !
Thanks! I am so happy you enjoyed it!
<3
Leave no module behind!! Cool patch!
Thanks! When CV routing and control space was more constrained than my vision for the patch... unused modules were just unorthodox ways to get the job done.
And Congratulations! on your wonderful patch/ composition getting the recognition it deserved!
Wow! It has a catchy pulse and very interesting sounds! BTW those Geodesics modules just look great. From a UI standpoint, they're a bit of a nightmare (at least at first), but I'd love to have a Geodesics hardware system just to have a mysterious space machine at home.
Some unsurprisingly gorgeous 3D renderings of them are floating around the interwebs somewhere :)
Thanks! and, I agree about the look- they are amazing- I love the circular flow w/ a pinch of an Art Deco vibe.. The only thing that throws me is the mix knobs are circular - as Unity points to the center, not South..... I can't tell you how many times I mixed Black holes the wrong way.
Nice sounds and variety in sound, great patch!
Thanks! I really enjoyed your patch as well- I loved the distorted/ fuzzed out bass you had that came in a ways into the song.
Best explanation ever about the delay pedal. Thank you !

thats so cool, very nice
I am so happy to hear that!
hi! can you tell more about your pedalboard?
Hi! My main pedalboad is more studio oriented, and always changing to the project. I have a smaller one that usually has some version of a Loop pedal, Octave, Drive, and a delay on it.
oh yeaaaaa
Thank! Thank you very much! k.anton.argentina.
Bravo!
Thanks! I am glad you enjoyed it!
L O V I N G THIS!!! MODAL LOOPING FIDDLE HEAVEN
I was recording on my computer and it didn't have a latency issue, the mic isn't that great so I opened it up on my phone to record and mix on my computer. When I synced my bass part on my computer it was about 2 beats off and I couldn't line it up with my guitar part really. I tried what you talked about but do you know if there is a feature to check latency? Or another suggestion? Thank you
I am sorry Alix, I am just seeing this now. I think in soundtrap you are going to have to use your ears and eyes to estimate latency. I know some recordings use an syncing click at the beginning and end to make sure things align, but I have still seen that done manually using the waveform graph. Ask on one of the sound trap forums!
@@manweilermusic you are all good, no worries. I did get it close enough that it wasn't too off (plus some reverb to help it not be as noticable). Thanks for replying!
1:47 it doesnt even let me do that?? help
What device are you using?
Okay, this is my favorite of the season. Love the primitive sound. What a treat. THANK YOU!!
