IronHeadAche Collective is my adventure riding, wrenching & learning about a 1976 Harley XLCH Sportster.
Ironheadache Collective Ep. #7 - Transmission Assembly Practice
Figured it would be a good idea to practice assembling the transmission while I wait for all of the parts needed to reassemble and install.

76 xlch1000 4th gear slipping on ride (listen to audio)
Переглядів 141Рік тому
Glad I had the GoPro on. Last mile of my ride, I got what I can describe as either a slipping clutch or transmission popping out in 4th gear. Maybe someone can narrow it down from the audio? I cleaned up the best I could.

Finally new video 👌🏼 what handlebars you riding on that sporty?
Honestly have no idea the manufacturer, they were on the IronheadAche when I bought it.
Do you remember where you got the paper washer for the generator gear?
You remember where you got the paper gasket for the generator
@@pos6666666 I believe it came with my gasket kit I ordered. I’ll try and get you a link for it.
out of all the bikes ive owned my iron head shifts the smoothest .
🌝🤙
What is your reasoning for switching to RHS? IMHO there's no inherent benefit, and it could be a huge detractor when you eventually sell it. if you really want a RHS bike, you can pick one up for practically nothing.
@@PoodlePuncher mainly to ditch the shotty crossover linkage harley had on the 76-76 sporties. But I know if I go down that road it’s gonna double my work list and probably headaches as well. I really want to spend less time wrenching and more time riding. Appreciate your input, feeling like a push in the “right” (leave it alone) direction.
✌
Excellent! Thanks bro!
Watch out for the replacement throttle spring from JP Cycle. It far too strong , made the throttle blade cut into the carb body , very quickly
Where did you get the manual?
@@GlobalTune I got the hard copy I have from a friend of mine.
@@IronheadAcheCollective just wanna say. im pulling my clutch and transmission rn on my XLCH 73. love what you do and its helping me alot. cheers from denmark!
@@GlobalTune thanks! I’m still working on mine, finally have the time to tackle the transmission. Got some big plans for the IronHeadAche. Will have new videos up as soon as I can!

Chopper shit here. Same tool same process, how TF do I keep my crank from turning if I don’t have a front brake??? I’m at TDC and can get the gear on about 3/4 of the way before it turns my crank out of time and just spins.

You didn't have to remove bowl do that rite up threw brass plug

Yo dude did you really assemble this whole deal and do so DRY ????????????????? Are you crazy ? I cannot for the life of me see how you have been a mechanic anywhere . NO real mechanic I know would ever install Cams without assembly lube on everything that touches any kind of brass bushing . YOU Cannot go steel to brass and do so DRY dude are you feeling alright ?
11:18 I apply oil to the steel ends that fit the brass bushings 🤗 are you feeling alright?

On my flathead i thought i lined the cams up perfectly, but there is way less valve overlap on the front cylinder and it doesnt run right. Sifton race cams.

Early 76 Ironheads had the big spring compensator, so you must have a later 76.
What’s with the stupid music? What’s music got to do with an S&S Super B Carburetor?
I believe you do your oil pump breather timing to the third mark on the flywheel going counterclockwise I had mine rebuilt and they put a different flywheel in so I did mine wrong and I'm in their correcting it, mine was pumping engine oil into the primary, I hate that they label that stuff one dot two dots or a line or double line why don't they just say first second or third marking and keep it basic and not keep everybody confused and doing things wrong, my service manual said set line in the window for the oil pump breather but this has a different crank now so the dot is the top dead center for the front cylinder so I did it wrong, if they would have clarified go to the third mark on the on the flywheel as its rotating around that would have saved me a lot of work
As long as index mark on pinion gear is at 12:00 (only goes on shaft one way) You should be good?
I really have a hard time texting on this is the anyway I could do some regular text messaging with you I'm still in the process of working on mine and I want to make sure I'm not screwing this
Up
timing marks r diff f0r diff year s0 make sure ur reading f0r ur year is all eye can say.
i suggest losing the annoying music to improve the watching quality of this video, :-P ..don't get mad at me...I'm only the messenger.
Love the music
Did find the problem?
It was a worn/warped shifter fork
Picking up my first bike a 77 xlh and as a visual learner your videos are as good as gold
Appreciate the help and info i just got a 77!
The bushing on the ratchet gear is too loose from wear. You can see the gap at 10:45 to the right side. That will cause problems. Had the same issue with mine. After replacing the the ratchet gear with a new one, that fixed it.
Saddletramp! I love your channel and watch a TON of your videos. I’m honored you’ve taken the time to comment and watch my video! Thanks for the help and expert advice! I have been on hiatus with work and life but am getting ready to get the transmission rebuilt and put back in the bike.
I think my eyes have gone bad. From the start until about the 5:45 mark your right arm is covered with tatoos, then until the 9:45 mark your left arm has the tatoos, then they switch back to your right arm. Nice trick.
Are you happy with the kit you bought? If so what was the seller’s eBay I.D.? Thanks for posting this procedure.
I'd like to know too

Sorry about the late response! Hope this helps!
I Love my IronHead-ache!! 1978 XLH. Wish I kept the 74'! Yes, owning old school REQUIRES ability.
Looks to me like you had a little trouble and had to pry the front exhaust pushrod into place with a flathead screwdriver. I had that exact same issue on my 76 sportster earlier on and found out it was because my valve seat was pretty much gone. Found "new" set of heads that had been freshened up and that fixed it.
Sorry man but the music is too damn distracting
GREAT VIDEO
At least someone who‘s working on the S&S B carb. , motor sounds great with it !!

IR0NHEADS RULE!!! 🤘😎🤘
Ah yea, back when you didn't have to split the case like the later evo sportys. I still have a Trock set up tool for 4 speeds somewhere that mimicks the back side of the case.
did you by chance check your end play clearances when it was in so you could rule that out also the 1 shifting fork looked bent from my eye balls view and spacing looked to close on your dog gears from my point of view its no fun tearing it back apart more then once ask me how i know this lol
You’re absolutely correct. The 3rd PD gear fork is totally blown out. We’ll put it all in the next episode. I spent the day just assembling and disassembling the trans to familiarize myself with it. I didn’t check the end play clearances before taking it out. I do not have the gauge yet and still need to learn the process, this will be my first time doing something like that.
@@IronheadAcheCollective ok thats cool everybody has a first them trannys can be very over whelming as you stated you spent the day familurizing yourself with it loll i gotta chuckle as i know where your coming from and i have yet to find a manual or video on how to describe to someone new to set 1 up properly im no expert but ive pulled my hair out and destroyed a handfull of them cracked cases and if not assembled with care you can explode the damn cases also put your main shaft and counter shaft on a lathe check runout for starters if you can find someone that knows not someone that kinda knows to show you and explain it you will save time monney and frustration first thing is tto determine what parts are good and bad and check tolerences spacer thickness bearing races sizing fork sizing check top hats and a trans fixture to keep things from binding look for hairline cracks in your dog house and paw carier ill be watching for when you work on it again if i can help in any way or answer a question you have let me know good luck
might wanna check the play of kicker gear on mainshaft for wear and i agree the brass sleve looks like its rubbin on your cluth basket your teeth on your basket you never showed he audience . need to check it al together for wobble just saying
I definitely agree the kick was wearing. We got the transmission out and the brass in the primary is definitely from a bent shifter fork so once we sort that we’ll address the kick start as well. Thanks for the advice and we appreciate you watching and commenting! Logan
3/8th drive extension for test shifting when the tranny's on the bench, that's what I use too.
It’s a perfect fit right?! Thanks to XLforum.com for all their sage wisdom!
Dude clean your camera lens and learn how to focus on what you’re doing, not the back of your head
Hey, sorry you didn’t like it! We are just working with an iphone and gimbal. We tried shooting in cinematic mode for this episode. Not sure how it was going to turn out. Thanks for your input!
@@IronheadAcheCollective I like the video just got to work on the camera
