Trains of Southern Illinois
United States
Приєднався 11 вер 2014
Hello friends my name is Mike and I'm a Railfan from Southern Illinois. I love trains, and enjoy filming and sharing train videos with other railfans. It's a fun and relaxing hobby for me, and being outdoors is a huge perk (I love the outdoors, nature, and weather). On this channel you'll find 4K quality train videos and railfanning adventures from small towns and rural areas throughout Southern Illinois. Some videos will contain other topics about railroad history. We have numerous railroads in the area that I railfan, including NS, CSX, BNSF, CN, and UP. I strive to offer as much content variety as possible across different railroads and locations in the Southern Illinois region. I hope you enjoy my videos featuring the sights, sounds, and beauty of trains in the Midwest. Please be sure to like and subscribe for more. Thanks for your support!

NS 8098 Conrail Heritage Unit Trailing on NS Train 219 Near Germantown, IL
First time catching NS 8098, the Conrail Heritage Unit (one of my favorite liveries). This unit was trailing on Norfolk Southern Intermodal/Autorack train 219, headed east on the NS Southern-West District on January 22, 2025. I caught it between Albers and Germantown, IL.
Hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

First railfanning adventures of 2025, and it was all about high speed freight! On January 13, 2025, I caught CSX intermodal train I007 flying through Highland, IL, lead by CSX 7284 & CSX 5276. This was a much shorter train than usual, with only 16 total railcars. This train was headed west on the CSX St. Louis Line Subdivision. I later headed to Freeburg, IL to catch a rare daytime grain train ...

On New Year's Eve 2024, I was able to catch the newest Norfolk Southern heritage unit, honoring the Tennessee Alabama and Georgia Railway (TAG). This glossy blue locomotive, NS 4851 (AC44C6M), was leading NS train 168, a mixed freight train headed to Luther Yard in St. Louis. NS 4570 (AC44C6M) was the 2nd unit on the front of the train, while NS 4476 (AC44C6M) was the mid-train DPU. This train ...

Christmas Eve Train Action 🎄 4 Norfolk Southern Trains in 2 Hours!

A busy Christmas Eve day of train action on the Norfolk Southern "Southern-West" District. I was lucky enough to catch 4 trains in just 2 hours across various locations in Southern Illinois. First up is westbound NS manifest train 168 in Bartelso, IL. Next we caught a westbound autorack train in New Baden, IL. Less than 20 minutes later, a 3rd westbound train came through New Baden. I live in Odin, the diamond there is removed as well where it crosses the CN there, formerly Illinois Central until CN took it over in the late 90s. I do still occasionally see some older Illinois Central units on some trains.
Yeah the diamond was removed in 2016, crazy to think its been that long ago now. Odin was a great railfanning spot when both lines were active through there. Still decent amount of CN traffic though.
Nice catch
@@jjrailfans Thank you!
Spent thousands and thousands of hours along So Illinois and So Indiana railroads with my son as he was growing up. He could not get enough of it! I enjoyed the time with him, and miss those days so much. He is now a conductor for a class I rr, and will be going to engineer school in a few wks.
Cool! Thanks for sharing that. Yes, there are numerous lines in this area and plenty of opportunities for railfanning the different carriers. Unfortunately some of these lines aren't as busy as they used to be, and see less traffic compared to 10+ years ago. Still plenty of train action all around though.
I just discovered this line on Google Maps earlier today while looking for something unrelated. Checked the crossings at Shattuc on Street View and saw the gates removed and lights turned, so I was curious about this line's status and history. Glad to have found this and a couple other videos shedding some light on it!
@@BadgerlandRailVideos Awesome! Thanks for watching! Glad to hear it was helpful. I plan to do some more videos this year that look at other locations along this line, and a few other abandoned lines nearby in the area.
Do you know where the trains are going or do you just sit in a random place for a day?
I try to mix it up and go to different random locations. There's several things that help when railfanning. I have a scanner, which helps to alert you if any train traffic is approaching. Several of the railroad lines around here have signal systems that help you know if a train is approaching where you're located at. I also monitor social media pages like a railfan Facebook group as people sometimes post what’s coming down a certain line in the area. Freight trains don't have set schedules, but there are usually traffic patterns across the different lines in the area. So you eventually get a rough idea of the best times of day to hang out near a line and see if you catch some trains. Some days are really busy and others are slower.
@ how can I get a scanner
@WarHawkPlaysyt I have a Uniden BC125AT. You can find them on Amazon.
That line is still barely active here in Southern Indiana as I think it sees about a train a week through Seymour.
Yeah both the Illinois and Indiana Subdivisions have really declined in the past decade, mostly due to CSX using the old Conrail Indy line and very little on line business.
Sounds like an original mileormore horn.
Excellent Video 🚂🚂🛤🎳
Thanks for watching!
😂 love the box car up on a flat car right behind it.
@@Arty0880 Yeah that was definitely interesting lol!
There still good tracks I hope and pray they reopen them soon I really miss the trains.
@@NickLange-h3s Agreed. I'd love to see this line reopen someday. I'm losing hope at this stage that it will ever happen though.
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois unfortunately there’s a better route plus most of the business on this line is gone
@kentuckyrailfan1 That's very true.
Excellent video my Friends 😊 awesome 😮 Like greeting
@@MarcelosalivaTRENESArg Thank you!
I love how the residents is outside just watching the train come by. Miss this kind of stuff on the Georgia Road
Yeah these trains caught a lot of interest due to them running on a line that had been out of service for a few years up to that point.
@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois I plan onto trying to visit it myself and my family one day. I wanted to make this line out of a Fictional Railroad to give it some support.
I was told that the Taxes on the line, go way down, once the rail is removed.
I've heard that too. That would explain why CSX removed all of the sidings along this line.
This is a case of too many lines going to the same place. The CSX owns 3 lines 20 miles apart.
@@ekeller88 Yep totally agree. The Conrail merger was the beginning of the end for the old B&O line. It became redundant.
Don’t forget the L&N line csx owns as well (EVWR) today. It’s a shame one RR got control over all 3 of these lines.
Yeah the same fate occurred with the old L&N line back in the late 80's/early 90's. CSX downgraded and later abandoned it west of Okawville into East St. Louis. The old B&O then absorbed those trains from that line at the time.
How many trains travel this track per day?
@@Allen-ye6wy Anywhere from 2-4 per day. It's mostly coal traffic plus a local train a few days per week. It's not a very busy line.
Longest train I've seen on that line!
@@charlessharrardiii7086 Yeah that's true. Traffic levels and railcar counts are both down on this line lately.
It started off pretty slow for I007.
@@isaiahbelmonte6778 Yeah they rolled into town slower than usual. There was a CSX maintainer working at the next crossing, so that's probably why.
That’s a nice sounding p5
@@Maxthefisherman09 It definitely is yes.
That's so cool to see that! Just like back in the '70's!
@@DouglasP201 Agreed!
For an ex Conrail, 6580 got both the headlights and the ditch lights moved. Why are they making the GP40-3s Seaboard species as if Seaboard had GP40s?
I don't know for sure.
That's a great set of power and nice to see something older get repainted. Also that building in the background is a classic. Nicely done
@@paulbergen9114 Thank you!
Really like that K5LA sounds nice
Yeah it does sound great!
does this line also run through minooka?
No it runs from East St. Louis to Vincennes.
Nice catch I’ve been wanting to get a cn but never can
Thanks! If you ever get a chance to go to Centralia or Irvington, the CN line through there is usually really busy, plus there's Amtrak on that line too.
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois yea I’ve been wanting to do that, but, one thing I do know is the cn line over here they be running at like 9:30 at night, but I might go over there I just gotta ask and hope that I can go.
@@trainrailfan-mv6xx Yeah the CN St. Louis line thru Belleville mostly only sees night trains. The Centralia Subdivision has about 10-12 per day sometimes. Plus that entire line is trackable with ATCS.
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois oh ok cool Ima have to try to get that
It is strange that they do not abandon it
@@larrybaldridge4078 Yeah I'm surprised they've let it sit dormant for almost 10 years now. Perhaps eventually it will be pulled up.
CSX would have to offer it for sale at a fair price. They have been avoiding it so far by keeping the asking price too high. There are fears of western class ones spreading too far east. That is why the L&N west of Okawaville got chopped, to prevent a western carrier from snapping up the shortline as a gateway east and forcing the shortline to ship through lines further east.
He gave me a good hornshow when he was going by that day
@@trainrailfan-mv6xx Nice!
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois where does this start at and finishes at
@@ryanstarr7491 Are you referring to this NS line?
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois yes
It goes from Princeton, Indiana to Luther Yard in St. Louis.
If I had the money I would buy the line and serve the industries that are left on it
This would make a great passenger line. I'm surprised Amtrak has not included this one in its service and route expansion plan.
True. Although I'd like to see a shortline acquire it and make a go at reestablishing business along the line that CSX abandoned back in the 90's and early 2000's. There used to be nearly 80 car locals that once ran this line, with rail business in Salem, Huey, Ferrin, Breese, Trenton, Summerfield, and Lebanon. There is still industry along the line in Lebanon, Trenton, along with numerous Top AG elevators. CSX also interchanged with BNSF and UP, and the connection tracks are still intact. With good marketing, local business could be established, much like EVWR did with the old L&N further south after CSX quit on that line. There is now thriving business on the old L&N from Okawville to the east.
Wow this is amazing and sad. I remember this line and CSX won't let anyone buy it. And my rr wanted it but no go. I'm am now a subscriber thank you
@@erikmcc804 Totally agree, it's unfortunate CSX is letting this line sit and rot away. Thanks for watching and subscribing, I really appreciate it!
I believe there's a high chance that CSX will use this route if a Hurricane damages the St. Louis Subdivision badly perhaps. Would love to see this line be put back in service

Hey I got a question do you have atcs monitor?
@@trainrailfan-mv6xx Yes I do.
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois ok can you check where ns 168 is rq because I don’t have atcs
@@trainrailfan-mv6xx ATCS tracking on most of the NS Southern-West District is really limited, since it's all track warrant signaled, except for a small section in Centralia. The part of the line thru Centralia is trackable, but not to the east or west unfortunately. The only lines in the area that you can fully track the entire line with ATCS is the CN Centralia Subdivision, and CN St. Louis Sub. CSX and BNSF use protocols that can no longer be tracked with ATCS. I expect CN to eventually switch to a protocol that makes ATCS nearly obsolete around here.
@@TrainsOfSouthernIllinois oh ok welp guess I’ll be waiting for ns 168 then
@@trainrailfan-mv6xx I've been in Centralia for nearly 4 hours today and there hasn't been any NS trains thru here yet. I've caught 2 CN and 1 Amtrak so far.
