Robbe Joy: Opaque Colours on the Wing Help Avoid Disorientation -21st December 2022 - ALES RC Glider

I had to do something about the number of times I've found myself disoriented with this glider. I experience the same with my TopmodelCZ Marabu, which is also a v-tail with transparent covering. So I recovered the middle panels of each wing with opaque covering - white on top (right panel with Joy decal and the left panel with a red and yellow stripe), and black with white stripe on the undersi...

Those of us in the UK know what it's been like as Autumn ends and we're about to enter the winter months. Mostly wet accompanied with strong winds - pretty disgusting. Today the air was still very damp, but by midday the sun came out for about half an hour. So I grabbed the Elf and Joy and walked briskly down to my local field - Ahh! I feel better now....

    Greetings all from San Francisco CA USA - I have a once flown Thundertiger Windstar 2M powered glider. It was a direct 550 brushed can motor with 7 AA nicad battery (very heavy) - I've seen them flown in this stock configuration. Mine was set up with a geared 2:1 I think. Flew once and I cartwheeled it when trying to bank left in the wind. Fast forward to 2024 :) I resurrected it and am looking to use 3 cell lipo 11V + and an ESC for Brushed motor. 2.4 GHZ Spektrum radio. Much lighter! Thanks for the inspiration. These "ARF" kits were super heavy back in the day. FDW

    What do you think of the Resco Carl. I've got one half built from about 18 months ago because of ordinary life getting in the way. I'm thinking I should find the time to finish it to enjoy some low, close up flights during the calm autumn days of October/November.

    • @RCSoaringUK
      @RCSoaringUK 3 місяці тому

      I've found the Resco to be an excellent flyer. I did change the angle of attack a little because even though my CG was to the front of the range, the glider seemed too floaty for my liking. I prefer my gliders to cover the sky fairly quickly as I've gained more experience. I changed the angle of attack with a little piece of 1/64" ply under the front of the tailplane and a piece under the rear of the wing - close to where it's screwed down so as not to distort the flying surfaces. As regards wind - once you get towards 10mph, it does struggle to penetrate. Go for finishing yours, as it will continue to ride round on low level thermals for quite some time.

    Thanks for this video. I've got an original Chief that my dad bought when he retired in the 90s. He cut all the pieces out but didn't get around to building it. I've been meaning to build it but I didn't like the idea of free flight, so it's been on the back burner for 25 years. It's now my next build and I will be following your rc conversion. Thanks again

    I had the same issue with my frsky 6ch vario reciever, for such expensive recievers the antenna connections are shocking bad.. I had to carefully squeeze the little brass female pin back into shape, it had mushroomed out and the antenna was just half falling out of the socket.. as soon as I verified that it was connected properly, I ended up putting a dome of epoxy on it so I wonh have any issues with it again.. I really wish they would do away with those antenna connectors, there so bad..

    "3 x 10m strands of 1/8" FIA rubber" You mean 3 10m lengths of 1/8" FIA rubber? If so, there is no way i can afford that here in NZ. it is NZ$4.10 per metre which would work out at around $120 !!!

      I've not bungeed these, but there is a hook included in the kit and a ready positioned hole for it. • @RCSoaringUK
      @RCSoaringUK 8 місяців тому

      Hi Tony. Based on my early flights, yes the Resco is a great inexpensive option, although it's now quite a dated design. As you probably realise developments of these RES models moves on year on year, and what's nice is that we non competitive flyers can enjoy the very models used in competitions. Have a look on the Hyperflight website at the various RES choices they have. For bungee launch I'm currently building a Magic 2 SL (Superlight) which is one of these competition level models. If you go for the Resco, you can buy the kit version from 'Model Shop Leeds.' This can be built either as electric or pure glider. I do have one of these kits unbuilt that I was going to put on eBay at a discounted price. Model Shop Leeds also have the ARF electric versions too. I was going to do a brief overview of the glider, so I'll ensure I include the power setup. Hopefully you thinking of building turns into actually building a RES glider, as they really are lovely gliders. For me it will be quite handy having an electric and bungee launch as it's not always convenient, time wise, to set up the hi-start.

      @@RCSoaringUK Hi there. I’ve just finished a Resco and I’m having difficulty with it. The stall speed seems to be quite high for such a lightly loaded model. It seems to zoom a bit. The stall is a mush with quite a height loss. I have the CG towards the back end of the range. I’ve found if I go any further back it becomes too sensitive in pitch so I’m quite close to the limit. The rudder however isn’t as effective as I’d expect from one like a barn door. I’ve lifted the leading edge of the tailplane slightly as it needed a bit too much down trim for level flight power off, indicating negative tail incidence. Do you have any ideas? The weight of mine is about 550 grams. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.
