In this video, we introduce you to Katie Whitaker, a vibrant student from Beaumont College Lancaster, and hear from her dad, Barry, about the significant impact Beaumont College has had on Katie’s life.
Katie's Perspective:
"Hello, my name is Katie Whitaker and I'm a student from Beaumont College. I've been at my work placement for quite some time. The things that I do here include cleaning down tables, taking items off tables, and then cleaning the tables again. I also go up and down the aisles with my trolley, and when it’s full, I take it to the kitchen and come back with another trolley. Then I get a cloth and a spray to clean the tables. What I love about being here is the staff, seeing people, and getting to know them and making conversations. I'd like to say thank you very much to Beaumont College for organising this. I have enjoyed the whole experience and it is the best placement I have ever had."
Barry's Perspective:
"Hi, I'm Barry, Katie's dad. Katie has Down syndrome and a severe learning impairment. As far as we're concerned, Beaumont College has provided Katie with four years of superb experience and education. She has developed significantly during this time, achieving various milestones in drama, dance, cooking, and catering. The big achievement for us was her completing the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award with the college, for which we visited Holyrood Palace to meet the Prince last summer.
Katie is a very gregarious young lady, and her confidence has grown over the years. The college has worked very well with her to build her confidence and give her the life skills she needs for her future. She aspires to move towards independent living, and we continue to support her in building those skills and confidence. I would like to thank the college for all their efforts and the personal touches we have experienced.
During Katie's final year, we've been working to achieve multiple work experiences for her. We've managed to set up an opportunity to work in the Booths Cafe in Garstang, facilitated by the college. She has been fully provided with a uniform, enjoys the experience, and is always welcomed by the locals. It’s a great experience for Katie and a wonderful community activity facilitated by Beaumont College."
