Quick demo of the Amber 5500 on a home built tube amp. The instrument has a GPIB port so with some scripting I can plot THD vs power and also frequency response.

My latest acquisition. The THD is jumping a bit. Is this typical behavior for this device?

IV-26 Vacuum Fluorescent Display VFD
My roommate had a junked out one of these in his garage. He told me it was an AS400, I guess that's what he thought it was. This was back in the 90's and it was thrown away as junk, and he was going to throw it away as well. By that time we were selling 300mghz K63D chips. I grabbed a circuit board out of the box for it's white ceramic capacitors and put it in my collection. It was only until this year I read IBM 34 on the chip, looked it up, and found out it was one of these instead. Considering I have a bunch of TRS-80 Model 1s... it's about the same age.. 1977. The oldest computer books and media I have are from the 60's from when my dad was in community college for computer accounting. Punch cards and stuff. Oddly we had a minifridge microcomputer in the house that did work. I actually plugged in a terminal and fired it up and waited for it to boot... which took 20 minutes. It too probably ended up abandoned or found it's way to the dumpster. By that time, these things were worse than the worst 8086 which it self was total hopeless trash. Glacially slow, huge, noisy, and power hungry. They were free from him if I wanted them and if I could have gotten them in my car, I would of brought them back to my farm and shoved them in a barn... but there was no way really to get them in my little car.
Man, just the Pumpkins at the top of their fucking game...
Such a great song. Too bad the sound isn't synced with the video.
I work in Venezuela Modcomp , like a TECHNICAL Manager.
Man I miss the S/34 I adopted...heck of a machine for its time.
Love muzzle!!! kudos to Matt! Great job on dums!!!

The click-clack of the monitor reminds me to my job training which I began in 1988
Hahaaaaaa, a guitar in the ring 😂!!!
It has been a pleasure to be part of the restoration process of this modcomp classic 7860. We are still looking for manuals and parts.
Power on to IPL is a bit faster than I expected.
Everlasting glaze comes on after the guitar smash to the face/head lol this is so epic 😂😂😂. I love Billy Corgan man!!!
Without Jimmy it's just not the same...
Thank God great sp concerts got recorded at the height of spd performances and that we can see it all now
1:20:40 “just who’s the fucking bald guy on stage?”
Lol
❤
Marshalls and Gibson's. How could you go wrong?
How did Conan know Billy likes chips so much.
Thanks for the upload!
The energy. Wow.
God I haven’t laughed so hard in years
Real footage of his band mate asking if they could contribute on an album
Billy is moaning over Andy not remembering him like he has a hard on for him... Silly Corgan 💩
.....and that ego just layed the Smackdown, WOOOOOOO!!!!
Awesome !
An update. In the video I'm currently using input A. It turns out this input is slightly noisy for some reason. Input B is much quieter and the readings are steady. The only difference between the inputs are two relays. I replaced the input A relay but it was still noisy so no big deal as B is fine. Now the THD reads as low as 0.0008% with the internal generator and the A weighting filter. Looks like everything is still in calibration. The only other minor issue is when reading voltages the auto range circuit picks an incorrect range. Switching to reading THD and then back to voltage solves the problem.
You're lucky to have the B channel option, wish mine did!
I've only just now realized how truly powerful this demigod is. He needs to be taken out
Weird how the drums hit different... Jimmy really was that good...
Hello, thanks for posting this video. Can you post a more in depth video using the Amber. Going through setup and connecting an amp to the unit. These Ambers are said to be the best, I would like to see why. All the best to you
Sure I can show how to connect an amplifier but the numbers won’t mean much until I do a proper test and calibration. The THD numbers in the video are from the internal generator and should read half of what it currently does. A friend of mine has a lab so it will happen soon.
It’s really cool to be able to exchange messages with you. I can’t wait to see what you post next. Really excited over here.
The Amber beat both the Tektronix and HP analyzers of the era, a Google search might provide info but I'm unable to find it. I have the original manual if anyone wants snippets from it but it's in something like a 3" binder so there's no way I can upload the entire thing.
@@7c3c72602f7054696b I have the 3501 model and I don’t know how to read the measurements. I can null out the wave form, I don’t understand how to read the nulled setting and calculate the THD. I have a Keithley THD 2015 meter that I use to take measurements because I can’t understand the Amber. I have the manual (pdf) from online, I’ve read it through but can’t figure out how to calculate the reading into THD. That’s why I was hoping you could give an example.
@@liltreesguitarco You should be able to read THD from the scale on the meter. Either in percent or dB.
00:24 - It's annoying AF when that drummer rushes the crash hit after every fill that leads into the verses...not like on the record and not like when Jimmy was drumming. Just isn't the same and throws off the whole band. Slopped up the feel and dynamics of the song.
“Have you ever heard the words ima singin in these songs?? It’s for the girl I loved all along” 🔥
Machina era was so fascinating. They hasn't ever been better live.
2008, man
@@guitaristssuck8979 I saw them on both tours. It's not even close. 1999-00' was the zenith of the Pumpkins as a live act.

Killed it
Wow! I wonder who directed this. Every other shot wasn't a close up of D'arcy. Maybe it's because she was playing to the wall.
Walker is very good under every aspect but didn't write that battery score. Check for the original track or any other live version around, Chamberlin watermark is undeniable... Great song, one of my favs overall.
Ughhh. Drummer fucked it up.
I was fortunate to see Jimmy as part of the band play live twice before things went to shit with Melvoin's death in '96. Matt is okay but there's nothing like Jimmy play live, especially the magic he made as part of the Pumpkins. He is a legendary beast of a drummer.
It sounds as if there’s a second drummer missing when Jimmy isn’t playing with them. His power and presence cannot be understated.
I've been looking for this for years! I remember seeing this way way long ago and so glad to find it. It's so awesome!
Such a powerful live song. Wow.
Don't fuck with Billy
Sabrina the Teenage Witch(before she turned into a lame Lifetime Movie person...) Smashing Pumpkins Late Night Conan O'Brien Gah....really miss the 90s sometimes. Especially now in March 2020....to say the least...
Dispite all his rage, he is still just a rat in a cage.

Billy and his annoying voice.
You and your irrelevant existence.
@@kristopherryanwatson Lmao, damn! I'm saving that one.
Then why are you here on an obscure so vid thats hard to find weirdo....
I wonder what song did the sound booth people play after Billy cracked the guitar over his annoying adversary's head ? (It could not be "Bullet with Butterfly Wings.." - that 'rat in a cage' song)
The song they played is The Everlasting Gaze.
All throughout the 90s and 2000s I never knew how fucking tall he was.
I remember
