Hey Tim! Long time no see. I love the idea for this piece especially since I am a musician but I’m also a student of astronomy. One idea that springs to my mind with this piece is how to incorporate scientific principles to its form, especially with dynamics. When we observe celestial bodies through telescopes, we implore the Doppler effect to determine how close or how far these bodies are to us or to each other. So when you talk about gravity and it’s nature of pulling apart or bringing back together, I instantly thought how that might be a interesting way to express the dynamics, keeping the red shift/blue shift model in mind as your themes diminish and augment. I don’t know… It might sound stupid, but I can actually feel the push and pull of gravity through dynamics as well as through the theme’s development

What a fascinating idea! At first, the idea of "orbits" takes the mind, naturally, to circular patterns, but the more I dig into this piece, I'm increasingly interested in the "pushing/pulling", "attraction/repulsion" aspects, and you're absolutely right that redshift/blueshift could very easily be expressed with musical devices. I'll have to pick your brain further about the astronomical parallels, as that's very much outside my expertise! Thanks for your insight!

Tim, you know I’m not a skilled musician, but I’m certainly enjoying following this creative process and appreciate that you invite people into it. No need to respond here as I’m just riffing. 😉 I find the simple melody captivating, innocent, and hopeful. I look forward to it recurring. The melody, the bi-tonal and dissonant chords playing off that melody, and the “scampering scherzo” seem to me like characters, perhaps personalities, of planets, comets, stars, or even people. Thinking of people reminds me of how astrological signs are said to correspond to human personalities of those born under them. What happens if planets and people orbit/behave differently than they’re “supposed” to? What if they collude to spin out of orbit, wobble erratically, follow a retrograde path, or have a different personality than their stars predict for them? I think of the Spirograph toy I had as a kid. The resulting designs /drawings look like the orbits of planets over time. In order to see a completed design takes persistence and patience. One reward of patience is seeing that a planet’s retrograde path is just a recurring loop in the flower-like design created by its orbit. The overall design would not be possible without those “retrogrades.” Finally, I’m imagining that the movements of planets/people passing along their orbits would create a Dolby effect. What does it sound like to play around with the volume of things (as represented by each component, melody, bi-tonals chords, scampering scherzo) at distances near and far? Thanks again!

What a wonderful though path, Jennifer! I love the ideas of retrograde and particularly the fact that this very abstract framework of orbits brought up visual imagery of the geometric spirals of the toy. I adore the fact that an abstract idea and non-narrative sketch of music could bring back a memory, and that is exactly what I hope to dig into! THANK YOU for taking the time to give your impressions and ideas! 💙 No wrong answers possible! This just adds to the richness of the work! 🙏🏽

Nicely done - fascinating to see the ideas develop! The idea of Orbits also has a lot of creative potential (you mentioned tension/gravity); I was wondering about the idea of an orbit that travels a circular path (orbiting around an object or planet or scene) and therefore halfway through its path it is inverted compared to its starting (and ending) location. Perhaps transitioning to and from a musical inversion might be interesting?

I love this, Philip! I, too, and drawn to cyclical, non-climactic (male) narrative structures where “arrival” and “conclusion” are subverted and removed to make room for other views, or inverted views, of the trajectory! I’d love to explore this further!
