Thanks Pete - very informative. I have been struggling for good shots for years. I recently found that NO TAMPING produces the best shots on my machine. Crazy. I don't tamp - just smooth the top of the grind in the basket using the tamper. Works for me, if this helps anyone. I use a Racillio Rocky Grinder set on 4.
I put my PID'ded Silvia V3 into storage after years of disappointing shots. Turns out, I was the problem, not the machine. I recently pulled it out of storage, did a bit of restoration, and have begun to relearn how to properly make espresso on it. I was going to sell it and get a Flair Pro manual lever, but like you, I'm having so much fun trying to figure out the mysteries of this machine that I'm going to stick with it for now. Thanks for your help, Pete -- I just ordered a new basket.
Hi there. I just received my new Silvia and we noticed that a drip of water comes out the bottom near the centre back of the machine after using it. Inside looks dry and nothing is leaking from the tray. It’s dead centre near the back. The water holder isn’t overfill and the tubes are in the right position. Your thoughts?
Where did you get the clear spout on the rocky grinder?
I used a fork…
Should the pressure be higher than 9bar when you deadhead the machine? Or you want to see 9bar with it deadheaded?
Fitting a PID has made the biggest improvement to my 2005 V2 Silvia. Just wonder why i didn't do it sooner🤔. My Rocky might get get replaced with a Eureka Oro Libra AP next.
What is the model of this thermometer?
Tried my hardest to watch the whole video but after the 100th “RIGHT” I had to stop 🤷♂️
I have a Silvia too and struggle to get decent shots, I think it's my lack of tasting understanding and also possibly too cool brew temp but I know I rattle through a lot of coffee trying to get a shot I like 😕
I prefer using the Felicita Arc as it only starts timing and weighing after some liquid lands in the cup.
Is it still 200 bucks?
Heating element on my v3 went recently, apparently a known issue with the sealing of the element. Machine purchased in 2012. Changed out element in boiler and now back up running. Absolute tank
I missed how you the water dump out the bottom near the tray, or if you are just running it how come nothing comes out the portafilter
how are you , are you missing using the blank or backflush basket >?maybe ? Pete
How much retention do you get in this grinder? Still satisfied with it?
Bill Im a big fan of the Ceado no complaints, - has been working great - Pete
Have you ever converted a Rocky w a doser to a doserless?
Good to see you’re still replying to this 3yo vid. I’ve been looking all over for some advice on my Rocky. I’ve had it ~12 yrs and have changed the burrs maybe 4, 5 times. Each time the grind settings alter vis a vis the glued-on scale which I’ve come to ignore since it’s all relative. But this last burr swap has presented a vexing problem. I scrupulously clean the innards and the threads of the brass collar in particular. I visually inspect the threads for ANY left over grounds that might compromise the screw. Well now I cannot for the life of me screw down the collar to the point of burr contact. I’ve tried really forcing the screw down (yes, I know, my father taught me to never force anything!) but even then I cannot get down to ground zero (no pun). It’s keeping me from getting the finest grind I need for my Silvia. There aren’t that many things going on in there to go wrong so what could possibly be keeping the collar from being screwed-down all the way? Thx.
Alan - I hope you made progress on this - sounds frustrating - and you've done it a few times successfully so you know whats up, only thing Im coming up with is coffee gunk in those threads limiting the depth, I cant believe its cross threaded - all very frustrating let us know and good luck - Pete
@@petesranciliosilvia3777 Hi Pete--thanks fo rthe response. Yeah, all good now since I posted the above. I went back into the Rocky's guts once again. I cleaned with stiff brushes and elbow grease and the threads looked copletely clean. I put it back together again and still I couldn't screw-down completely. Undaunted I dismantled once again and this time I grabbed a toothpick (one of life's unsung tools!) and ran it through every. single. thread.; both the brass collar and its female counterpart. It removed miniscule ammounts of gunk; barely visible until the toothpick scraped it out. And that was it! Nearly imperceptible amounts of coffee bean gunk completely gummed-up the works. I can now screw the brass collar down to its scrape point. And the ground setting is freely turning.
I found a good deal on a used E6P that has the single dose burr upgrades. However, this machine looks like a nuisance to use in a single dose workflow, very hesitant
Matt let us know what you do, Im just not sure any single dose isnt it own beast, Im not going to get a bellows, and stress about retention, or in/out, - I fill it up and use those beans that day, Im not going to pre measure etc in the AM, its all I can do lately to just get the single shot of espresso 😀
@@petesranciliosilvia3777 I haven't done anything yet, not sure if the guy still has it. I'm working ok with my current grinder as long as it's a relatively dark roast. I'm sure I'm getting some of yesterday's grinds, but that's the least of my concerns.
@@mattgraham4340 I hear you, the light roasts I use are some of my challenge, the darks are just more forgiving, and Im still not sure that after you have used the grinder for 2-3 days, that every hiding spot hasn't become full inside the grind chamber, leaving nowhere for 'current' grinds to stall out - and as you say, of all the problems I have that is low on the list - good luck
@@petesranciliosilvia3777 I would assume the designs that have a direct fall through path are better with respect to retention, but there's always some trade-off or price escalation for whatever nuisance happens to catch our attention
@@mattgraham4340 always fun to look, but diminishing returns and being happy with the current results, good luck Pete
Many thanks for the instruction and dry humour - trying to get my Rocky fine grinding again for my new Profitec Go
nice work thanks good luck - its a solid grinder let me know how it goes - Pete
Hola mira que lo limpie pero al prenderlo lo arranca no prende que puede ser
Hey man! Great video. I cleaned my machine as you just did, but now the machine has stopped turning on. Any idea as to why that would happen?
oh man thats a tough result - any luck on a solution ? - Pete
I say this just because it has happened numerous times to me, but make sure the main on/off switch on the bottom-side of the grinder didn't get switched to "off."
What grinder do you use please?
the Ceado E5P or the Rocky - Pete
Have you ever aligned your e5p? I feel My e5p is not grinding ok and shots looks horrible, even i have a limited espresso range when grinding.
I have not no - I replaced the burrs, but cant tell you I noticed any improvement - it would great with stock burrs, so far so good, have things improved ? Pete
Hey man amazing video. I am thinking of getting one they are great machines man. If i were to get one i would like the pro x.
Anthony thanks, thats a great machine agreed - Pete
Pete I noticed you turned it to brew on while the light was still blinking, (I'm new to this) I thought you needed to brew once the light turns off? thanks! also why did you stop it at 27 secs? is there a science for that?
Mike Im sure you figured it out by now sorry for the slow response, the PID flashing the light is showing it is maintaining the temp - this could be different than info you have regarding temperature surfing which - would be waiting for the light to show the temp had been reached - Pete
Pete ive watched HUNDREDS of videos and i finally stumbled upon yours where you explain everything i wanted to know ( im very new to this) thank you!! subscribed!
👍🏻 thanks Pete
Great video! Hi Pete. I have a question. After each brew, there is a mark left in the middle of the coffee puck by the screw head. You know the screw head for the shower screen is quite tall. When I lock the handle in place, this causes some difficulty. I used 16g of beans. I wonder if this is normal.
I think its normal to get the bolt imprint depending on dose, to different degrees, and - for good or bad, Im not sure there is a LOT of info saying it a bad thing, - you can get a different bolt/screen and remove that concern , or even a bigger dosage basket so you dont have to pack it so full - lots of options good luck Pete
I just installed an Auber PID about 90 min ago and was wondering about the temp fluctuations (which, yes, freaked me out). Thanks for confirming that's how it goes!
Rich perfect thanks glad that helped -Pete
Hi is it necessary to have a pid? I’m not a tinkerer and there are no repair centers in my area. Can I just temperature surf and still get great espresso?
dragon you bet you can get great espresso without the PID, - Pete
after 4 years of ownership and two espresso shots at 22g everyday for that entire duration, i finally did a tune up on the silvia today due to a noticeable decline in the brewing force. I also felt like crap on how much i neglected care on this machine(not recommended). I found so much coffee build up on the shower screen and the entire group head area(under and around the seal) YET I WAS STILL GETTING FLAVORFUL SHOTS. Omg how much my love for this machine grew. This machine is a TANK and probably the best $700 i’ve ever spent with the $700 niche zero a close second. So i spent 2 hours cleaning it today, it was not fun, i was sweating at times because the build up was bad then did the tune up with new seal and shower head. I also dezcaled it for the second time ever. Man oh man did i get some rich flavorful shots and way better than yesterday’s(to be fair they were also flavorful) and i got my consistency back. I stumbled across your video while looking for tuneup and cleaning videos and just wanted to share my love for the silvia with another silvia owner because even when i travel to morocco or europe, i rarely find a coffee shop the brews a better shot than i do and when i do i literally make the trip to that café and i ignore every other café in between. Now these cafés all have $5k-20k espresso machines and my $700 tank kicks their butt in flavor, crema(forget about it) and everything else. I just love my silvia. Now it’s time to service my niche zero as it made my life and consistency million times better. Love my Gdealer scale as well still on my first one and kicking. I don’t have any upgrade for the silvia except for a bottomless portafilter, a pressure stamp a coffee spreader and those needles to break any small crumbs. No PID, just a 30 to 40 second wait after the orange led goes off(sometimes i play around with the wait time depending on how light of roast the coffee is) but i would say my shot quality accuracy is between 75% to 80% on the good. That means knowing the coffee, the grind size for it and doing the same process. 2 out of every 10 shots are either too fast or too slow so i have to dump.
nice to all of the above- Pete
12 bar with no release. With shot flowing through basket the system should be at 9 bar. Your system if at8 bar (closed loop) the shot bar with open loop is probably around 6 bar
The link to the kit no longer works.
🤷🏻♂️🥲 - we can't fight change - Pete
Thanks Pete! just picked up a seconds hand silvia and much to learn... but this helps
nice good luck enjoy - Pete
Nice Grinder, wondering what is the brand?

What's the measurement of the screw that you use for the shower screen?
Hey mate, how did you get the metal covers on the screw stems for the brew cover? I have a new brew cover and they don't seem to fit on. You skipped this part in the video :(

Yeah man. Caffeine and Capitalism. It's what makes the world go around.
@@endoalley680and also the coriolis effect
I think I know the right word. Impedance. . . . BTW, What do people think of puck screens?
Now you need a new portafilter to go with the new basket. Once again Amazon wins.
Do you have a video on adding the dimmer?
Hi. I have an Auber PID kit that I am about to put on my 2003 Silvia. I have added a new boiler a while back and new OPV recently. The old Silvia still works great. I am wondering how you wire the dimmer in with the PID? Is there a video detailing that mod? Where did you get the small dimmer and box? Just an Amazon/ Home Depot/ Ace small plastic junction box and incandescent light dimmer? I think I have seen you with different opinions of that mod. I think I would like perhaps to do it with a 3-way switch ( On - On W/Dimmer - Off). Thanks.
First common sense video on the Rancillio I’ve seen. Have had mine for over 10 yrs without the pid. It’s been hit or miss and frustrating. I think it’s time to get the pid to help. Very thorough video. Thanks!
thanks and good luck, - 10 years ! agreed PID not required , but, - maybe after 10 years its worth giving a try - who knows - let us know! Pete
Just 10 years? Newcomer. I bought my Silvia in 2003. I just found this channel. I am about to put an Auber PID on it. Got the PID unit in a box. Pete's channel is just what I have been looking for.
After 10 years maybe look into an upgrade to the pro x
@@anthonyzouki Why?
@@JeremyFoster-ve6kq all depends on personal preference, but after buying one a siliva you want to learn to the machine pros and cons, and i think 3-4 years upgrade to the pro x if you want, but if you are happy you dont have to.
Thanks so much mate. Great video. Helped me every step of the way.

Thanks. I've been dialing in my shot prep. and this was very useful.
great good luck - to us all! Pete
I know this is an old video, but you did not say whether the new burrs made any difference (noting you could not see any wear on the older burrs nor see a difference in measurement).
I may have noticed an initial difference - BUT - that could have been from the machine being cleaned, that I was paying attention etc - and I refer to the sound and 'how' the coffee ground - I noticed no taste difference if that makes sense, - Pete , I know people mention the break in /season period etc, all has validity but - in my taste range I didnt notice a eye opening change to taste , I think I was able to back off from being at a '1-2' to more like '2 -3' so that is a difference also , but we also know beans /roast level could be impacting that - there are so few perfect answers in this mess we are in
