Our Last Practice Together + Exciting Announcement!!!
We have big news everyone: Ely is moving to Germany! This is both sad as it means we will no longer be regularly playing together, and exciting because we will be playing with new people and going on more adventures!
The road for White Lotus is not over - we will play more tournaments when we visit each other and we are planning on making new content around our roundnet adventures, podcast talking roundnet things, and making drills/tutorials on what took us from beginner to premier!

Переглядів 24914 днів тому
This is more of a podcast chat style episode where we discuss our thought more in depth about the rule testing tournament we did, how we felt about it, what was good and what wasn’t, and what steps can be taken in the future. We hope to do more testing in the future and we would love your thoughts on what to try out!
We tested 3 different rally balls! Here's what we thought.

The IRF just announced that roundnet is going to be seeing changes in the coming season! This means rule & or equipment change. For us, this is really exciting and we have been rule testing ourselves. A ton of people are buying rally balls from spikeball, so we decided to do the same and try them out playing ones. We ended up getting 3 different rally balls when we just ordered one kind and we ...

This is our roundnet story! Ely had this idea some months ago and we were just able to make it happen. This is the tale of how we both went from playing only 1v1 spikeball to getting premier and becoming established in the division - all with just playing with each other! In this video, we talk about our journey from our first time playing with each other in 2018, to our first tournament in 202...

White Lotus Roundnet highlight from the 2023 Spikeball Tour Series Championships! People call it nationals too though it’s not technically that. We played in the premier division (semi pro) and placed 40th out of roughly 80 teams in the division! This was a huge step for us as we started the season at the very bottom of premier. Thanks for sticking with us and follow us on instagram @whitelotu...

i hope you enjoy the land of good roundnet
Love it ❤ Looking forward to many more 2. Bundesliga Vlogs 😊
There absolutely will be! Thx for making such a great community
thanks so much for the amazing video! Love the concepts, especially the 30ft boundary. Nearly all sports have boundary lines so it makes sense to implement them for roundnet to make defense more fair. Just a quick side note: at 2:40 the person being interviewed is wearing an "Albany Roundnet" hoodie, which is the city I live in. Is there any way I could contact him about Albany Roundnet to see if they still play?
Hey! Thanks for these thoughts. I feel super good about the boundary after playing with it. I think ideal distance may be 35 ft but will need to test. As far as Matt wearing the Albany hoodie, he went to college there and is now living in Boston. I would contact Sienna Roundnet or RPI roundnet on Instagram as they are the groups who play in the Albany area!
thanks for making this, this is a great step for the game
Yo thank you! We plan on doing more testing soon and there will be content around that as well :)
I'm actually intrigued in the data here, looking at the pie charts from 8:30 from finals. We are looking at 80% of points having a ball be received (not an ace or double fault), but only 17% of them resulted in a defense touch that went back to the net, which means that someone brough a touch back to the net about 21% of the time. The game is actually more 1,2,3s than it was before which seems like the opposite of what we want. At least with serving their is some agency for the serving team and they don't have to rely on their opponents making a mistake. In addition the assumption is that setting and hitting with these rules will get more refined and that defense will remain as difficult if not more difficult, which will result in more 123s as people get used to the equipment and rules. Nerfed serving + increased consistency just means you end up playing a very repetitive turn based game where everyone holds until someone makes a mistake. I think I prefer the pitch/hit version because it is at least exciting and challenging and has variance. If we find a way to really improve the ability to get touches and we end up trading serving agency for defensive agency I think that would be awesome.
I appreciate these thoughts! I agree that the data wasn’t making us feel like these are the exact right changes, but I would say defense felt much easier, just experientially. I would encourage you to try it out. I had much more fun playing it and it did trade some of the serving/double faults to defense as well as hitting. But overall we are planning on doing more testing of new ideas because of the amount of 123 putaways here. I agree that the ideal would be to take from double faults and serves and give to defense so they are at least equal
Roundnet is my favourite sport to play of all time, I got a club going in my city. Seeing you guys test out rules, push the sport further, and make it more fun to watch/play is just amazing!
Yay!! Thank you for pushing it forward with your club as well! Where are you at? I’m gonna be doing some travels next year and will be visiting a bunch of roundnet clubs
@whitelotusroundnet660 ah flip dude, I'm in South Africa😂 so I doubt the visit, but I'm supporting you guys!
Loving these changes! it feels like defense has a chance on almost every ball no matter how soft it hit the net
Yes I always felt like I had a chance on the ball even on put on serves which is really cool
So nice! Love to see that you are working on changes for this great sport
Absolutely! It is very worth it because we see this sports potential. We love it so dearly
I really like this video, great mix of entertainment and thoughts and interviews 😍
Thank you! Ely is great with the content :)
I think allowing the tracker to be wherever they want when their teammate is serving would make 123 put aways much lower and defensive breaks + rallies much higher. We have tried it in some pick ups and it feels great, it's very easy to try and implement, as there is no fundamental changes to the gameplay or court, just a little bit of help to the serving team to get a touch after the receiving team hits to get momentum going on the point. These rules together could make a great game
Aah interesting idea! I would love to test this myself, I actually haven’t heard this as an idea
4:52 you can overlap the fields
Yes true! The worry is that if the sport gets more rally based the fields should be further apart cause more people will be running around and more potential for injury of the nets are close. But yeah I think this could be a viable option as long as it wasn’t too much overlap
@ do you know the distance the sets should at least be apart from each other in a tournament?
@@gabriel_roundnet USAR guidelines is 36ft, for this event everything is 60ft apart to fit the two 30ft out of bounds
Alright then if you put it like 45 ft apart, you should be good an not loosing a ton of space
Which city are you moving to in germany?
He’s in Bonn where his parents live - just south of Cologne!
2:03 gigachad
hahahahahahah
Super nice work guys ! I really love the discussion! I really missed if you had any ideas, because you just tried everything that I thought would be enough.. so now im just a little depressed that it didnt had a bigger effect. 🙃😞
I hear you!!
We will keep testing and keep you updated. We are feeling similar tho
Absolutely love defining rallies as 4 touches or more. You're so right that as a spectator, watching a defensive break doesn't often get me out of my seat, it's when the ball goes back and forth that I'm going to get excited. Keep up the awesome work fellas!
Thanks Joel!!!
I’m happy we will all be working together on the IRF team (this is Mitch) (ely is the content and communications lead on the team)
20:20 "Where do we want this sport to go?" is an excellent question. I hope more folks start thinking and talking about it alongside the rule changes... similar to doing the testing, we'll also have to drive the sport toward those visions too.
Absolutely! I loved it when he brought that up thx for highlighting
thank you for being the pioneers that we sorely needed.
We love you Manish your energy is what our sport needs
I still worry about the 2ft NHZ because of what it does to coed which is such a valuable asset in our growing sport. The 2ft NHZ increases the level of footwork demanded with each hit, but that the level that is demanded will eventually be nullified by the skill level improving over time (just like we have seen with the current NHZ) I prefer to focus more on changes that directly impact the principles of the game to create a better experience for both viewers and players in a sustainable way while also be logistically possible from a manufacturer perspective A bigger ball and boundary help with those things, as even with a lot of time put in, those changes will not be ‘nullified’ - the ratio of the game will still be similar even as we improve our skills, the sport would just become more and more entertaining to watch as the skill level increases - and that is an incredibly exciting future to think about.
I respect this take! Especially with the co Ed issue. I disagree though that the 2ft nhz would be nullified over time. People would get used to all the rules, but they will always give some sort of limitations on hitting. I’m excited to see what comes out of your testing week!
@@whitelotusroundnet660yeah but then taller people are in favour and can hit just as good as small people right now (which is pretty good)
Good stuff
Thanks boss man
Great video. I agree about the rally definition needing to change, but I’m fine with it right now because we need to have more ‘3 possession points’ to even have the opportunity of a 4th possession and over time this will come (through more reps and believing your chances are high of getting a touch) and then we can potentially add the footnote when getting into the details of rallies of and explaining the difference Also to note, I didn’t want to originally define it as that, I wanted to define it the same way you are suggesting, but the IRF chose to do it this way and I believe consistency is very key when we are tracking stats to be able to best compare data during this revolution period.
Thanks Scott! I hear this, consistency is important. I think we will keep taking stats the way we have here and also have separate graphs where we just include the 4 percentages and not split up rallies and breaks.
Thank you for the work you put into this and the open mindedness for changing the sport for the better.
Absolutely and thank you for everything you’ve done Gavin! You put out great content for a while
Something for people to test out: play with a rectangular out-of-bounds zone (can even be close to as small as 1 Volleyballfield (ideally you'd have 1,5x i feel like) making it practical to purchase as equipment) - gives setting towards the longer lane additional value :)
I’ve heard this take - I think this feels like a bummer for me cause it takes away from the true circular vibe of the sport. But I get that it would be practical for field space
@@whitelotusroundnet660 More than anything its an invitation to play around with it. I've only tried for a few hours so far but felt like circularity is still preserved (hitting into empty space is still a winner) and it makes it easier to have boom still be an option (eliminating the long-range chase-downs would be sad as they are cool to watch) without it being such a dominant/non-skilled option as now you kind of have to plan for it when setting.
8:10 "doesn't affect me" this mans lucky the NHZ lines were wearing off that day💀😭
He is indeed 6’4’’
But yeah I was also thinking it would be more clear how people would be affected by it if we played on turf. Doing that in practice made it clearer how far back the line really is
really easy to be not affected when NHZ violations aren't called 😉
18:38 Maybe people also need to get used to playing and thinking more about defense. Like you said you change a lot of rules which also changes the way you should play defence to have a high chance of a touch (distance from net, body positioning etc.) Also u said u did a lot of "put ons on 2" which also increases the chance of a clean sideout. Still too early to tell if hitting is still OP but defence definitly needs time to catch up and adapt to new rules
I like this take! I think people could get way better at defense with these rules, especially since there would be way more incentive to do so
fully agree with this! one of the best feelings with these new rules was being "close enough" to a defensive touch to where you felt as though with more reps, the touch would get better and you could extend into a rally. whereas previously, if you got a slightly-less-than-perfect touch, you're not rewarded nearly as much. the former really helps with increasing the incentive for defense.
Love the interviews and the different opinions ! Great content
Thanks my friend!
LOVE THIS DEFINITELY NEED THESE ESPECIALLY RALLY BALL
Yesssss!!!
Young austrian player here ! Wanted to aske where you kan get the rally balls? Best wishes from austria.
peace homie! dope hearing from you out in Australia!! unfortunately I don't think these rally balls are available out side of the US. They are in test production right now. Good thing is, they are super inconsistent, so by the time they are available world wide they should be much better!! Sorry brotha! (Sick profile pic in the POW btw)
I was really voting for big nub too at the 00:09 sec mark 🙁
Too early of a call garbeckles
Nice video.
Also we just played with the no nub balls just us two for another session and it was AWESOME
No Nub November incoming
🧐🧐
Consider your comment pinned
Is that also the 2ft NHZ?
Yes but we made it too big. We tested 2 ft nhz recently playing against other gold players and loved it. I’m excited to try that plus rally ball. Good eye!
Drop your rule change ideas in the comments!
Very interesting discussion and good points. One other potential hurdle is that roundnet is self-refereed, and I'm wondering if there are any potential solutions to that problem?
Hey! Thx for this. The current solution is that there are observers (basically refs) at the highest levels, but it would just cost too much to get observers at all levels of the game. But yes this is an issue! One potential solution is to do it like volleyball where the sitting team refs. Good thoughts!
7:48 in the pouring rain is ridiculous
So true😂
For longer rallies, why not play in a square room with walls, something like squash. The ball can bounce on the walls and this way if the ball is out of reach it will bounce on the wall and you have a second chance to catch it. This should definitely lead to longer rallies and new strategies. There would be more importance on placement instead of power.
Creative idea! but having to have walls for the sport would sadly limit and alter the sport way too much
I love playing on squash courts! It’s definitely something I would love for there to be more tournaments of, but the outdoor play just can’t be beat to me so I’d be looking for solutions on grass
What is the difference between roundnet and spikeball
Spikeball is a company, roundnet is the sport
Yeah the other comment here what they said! It’s important to make distinction between the two. It’s like calling basketball Spaulding.
Roundnet stock after this video 📈📈📈
Hahahahaha Bro I just saw this and it got me smiling ear to ear

Great video.
