Its a damn shame MGM didnt make more full movies with Lena acting and then only release them in places that weren't the Deep South. Lena was a true star! She didnt even get to reach the Dorothy Dandridge level as far as film goes. I imagine Lena shining in those early 40's films, allowed to reach the heights of Lana, Ava, Rita, Hedy and Veronica. Lena had that, but yet again ignorance and hate deprived us of so much. Lena will always be a favorite of mine! That voice is one of my favorites too.
Ms Lena Horne was absolutely unapologetic and a lady in all the she did and more! She was so classy and gave of herself a God given talent! RIP MS LENA HORNE ❤❤❤❤❤!
I’m sorry to ask but I’m from Ireland what did Jim Crow mean. I’m guessing he was a man who thought white people were better than black. Am I right was he in government who Did people think they were
From Wikipedia: The earliest known use of the phrase "Jim Crow law" can be dated to 1884 in a newspaper article summarizing congressional debate. The term appears in 1892 in the title of a New York Times article about Louisiana requiring segregated railroad cars. The origin of the phrase "Jim Crow" has often been attributed to "Jump Jim Crow", a song-and-dance caricature of black people performed by white actor Thomas D. Rice in blackface, first performed in 1828. As a result of Rice's fame, Jim Crow had become by 1838 a pejorative expression meaning "Negro". When southern legislatures passed laws of racial segregation directed against African Americans at the end of the 19th century, these statutes became known as Jim Crow laws.
I respect TF outta Mrs Horne… understand, she could have easily “passed” but chose to not only live in her truth- but she Consciously stood up for black people, and opened many doors for those to follow.
Ms. Lena was absolutely beautiful, graceful, elegant, sophisticated, talented, unapologetic and real. Her voice was absolutely amazing she had so much class and was in a league all by herself. She was truly a Queen in her own right RIP Ms. Horne 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
The story of Lena Horne regarding her struggles with racism is emblematic of the times and heartbreaking, but ultimately triumphant! I always thought of Lena as ageless and tough as stone, a very hard stone.
People are saying that no women spoke at the original March on Washington, but they're wrong. Lena Horne spoke, or rather, shouted for all to hear @41:08
I went to see Lena Horne the Lady and Her Music at the Warner Theater in Washington DC. Watching this program reminded me how much I enjoyed her performance and all of the history that was her history to command. I give God thanks 🙏 for so very much.
I’ll always remember the quote attributed to her that came on another tribute to her after she died, “It’s not how HEAVY the load is. It’s HOW you carry it.” She overcame so much and cleared the path for others to succeed.
@ 36:10 Singing next to Sinatra she made him look like a third rate chump. And Judy Garland to. Both giving off body language like - "I don't want to be here" As a youth in the 50's I was always intrigued by here look and her voice. She had the fine features of a white woman and the voice of a black woman. I love this retrospective on her life. Explains to me why I didn't see more of her growing up. She had the voice of an angel.

She was a MAMZER.. not African at all. She was a beautiful girl.
These black folks had to be a hundred time better than the whites in order to get a foot in these doors,,, better than han the rest,,,
No one greater at acting out a “torch song” class and style personified.

Her beauty is surpassed only by her inimitable singing style. I hope she found peace when she was reunited with her family and loved ones in Heaven.
