    The sound is fantastic. All the voices and instruments are so clear so well delineated. It is one of the best if not the best. Unfortunately starting at 9:10 the cymbal and triangle are not accompanying the bass drum. Wonder if it was Mahler's idea.

    This is one of the best performances of the Mahler orchestration that I've heard.The balance between the strings and the more robust brass is maintained nicely. The intricacies in the strings are still heard clearly as Mahler, always a stickler for clarity, intended that they should be. I've heard other recordings where the brass is too loud, overpowering the strings. This one got it right.

    I'd also love to know which performance/conductor this is, and if it's available anywhere. Obviously recorded live per audience noise, but I think this is my favorite version of this piece that I've heard, with all due respect to Cassuto/Royal Scottish Orchestra (also pretty good as well). But the lyricism and dramatic gestures from strings and percussion are more spirited and vital-sounding in this reading to my ears though. Wonderful piece of music either way!

    Thank goodness Mahler was a master orchestrator, and as such, his reworking is fantastically in-line with Beethoven's sensibilities; with a Classically-sized orchestra, Beethoven's orchestration works supremely well, but the modern orchestra's simply ridiculous number of strings does tend to drown out details, which Mahler did well to draw out.

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer 6 років тому

      Yes but what Mahler should have done instead of writing extra parts is reducing the string section down to the numbers of Beethoven's time, which is what is done now most of the time. His trumpet writing would have been impossible with the trumpets of Beethoven's time.

    • @MartyMusic777
      @MartyMusic777 6 років тому

      Quotenwagnerianer Yeah, but that's not really in line with how orchestras work, especially in Mahler's time; editing composers' orchestrations was and remains common practice - it makes for a better performance for everyone involved. For those people who want to hear historically informed performances, the option is out there, but really all that Mahler did was to double some instruments to bring out the layers and to present a clear picture of the power in a late 19th Century orchestra.

    The music sounds really good in this version, Mahler gives the fortes more body, with more woodwind and brass, and with the large string body of his time that would have been an improvement. Interestingly, when the original version is performed with a classically-sized orchestra, the music looses nothing of its grandeur and power. And the textures are more clear and incisive.

      Mahler reorquestro esta sinfonia por razones practicas. Orquestras modernos necesitan mas vientos para equilibrar la potencia exagerada de las cuerdas y los latones. O esto, o utilizar los instrumentos de la epoca de Beethoven.

    • @Mur4dMusic
      @Mur4dMusic 4 роки тому

      The major changes are associated with woodwing and brass, so Mahler kind of "increased" their role in movements changing some dynamics to forte or fortissimo or making them playing in parts that Beethoven actually did not add.

    • @NYCZ31
      @NYCZ31 3 роки тому

      Beethoven was deaf when he wrote the Symphony so while he could certainly hear in his head what he was writing down, when it was actually played, it might not have actually sounded as he fully intended. Also in the decades between Beethoven and Mahler orchestras and tastes had changed, so Mahler probably intended a “rebalancing” of sorts so that a Romantic-era orchestra could play the Ninth and we’d still get the experience Beethoven intended.

    • @slubert
      @slubert 3 роки тому

      What also needs to be taken into account that Beethoven wrote this piece for Instruments of his era (while he was deaf). Mahler was conducting an orchestra many decades later that had more modern instruments. Changes are often really needed when performing old music because modern instruments are often louder than the old ones. And i also heard that if a conductor had a bad orchestra he would just change the score to make it work, f. Ex. give other instruments the parts the bass could not play on their own, doubling the parts.

    • @Alekos-Maniatis
      @Alekos-Maniatis Рік тому

      In my opinion, the difference is that this symphony sounds like Mahler. Not only after Beethoven anymore. An unnecessary change that harms the piece. Fortunately, the original version is played. Whether Mahler was too arrogant? I don't know. But better the original.

However, I will stick to my hypothesis that Mahler was actually quoting Mendelssohn's 3rd piece (Andante Maestoso) from from his magnum opus "Songs Without Words" (Book No. 5). Now, it is also obvious that Mendelssohn was quoting Beethoven C minor symphony. Ergo, Mahler was quoting a quote, which is Mendelssohn and Beethoven at the same time.
