This is a shorter video on the amazing benefit of always blocking 5ths with your 1st and 2nd finger - even if you aren't actually playing 5ths with your bow. The longer video is here if you care for more info and examples. ua-cam.com/video/zofpB9C8om8/v-deo.html

Your viola is so good and esthetic. 🎉❤😮
A hidden gem of a recording, one the best performance I’ve ever heard, elevated by some of the finest acoustics imaginable.
Thank you so much for sharing this teaching. It has helped me so much! Watching your older videos, I can see that your playing has improved so much since you have started blocking 5ths.
Beautifully performed!
Very helpful video. Thank You.
Prestation absolume,nt exemplaire ; il faudrait envisager à nous prodiguer les trois autres suites .
Nice
Respect !
Thank you David for your input with more details on the 5ths - may I add that the fifths placement makes Stamitz opening chords, Beethoven 5 2nd mvt except beginning, and countless others so much easier as well. Hope you have a great day.
I’ve recently developed a love for kreisler on viola, this piece works so well!
Such beautiful playing! Thank you! I find the 4th Prelude so difficult to memorize and you did it so masterfully!
The kind of musicality I could listen to all day. I can let my guard down and trust that every phrase will be tasteful. Enviable bow technique, perfect accent 5:50
Most Beautiful, one is put in mind of the 'Lark Ascending'
Just thank you.
Wow! Thank you. Also thank you for the video on Sevcik 8
Magnifico!!
Alguien sabe como se llama ese estilo de viola ?
Se llama iizuka patterned viola creo
One of the most beautiful moments that a human makes. Thank you.
That’s a violist.
You're not the only one practising in your jimjams. I even practise in front of the telly! Ha!
Thanks,Matey. These are a godsend. I'm prepping for my grade 8 viola without a teacher.
Wow, what a spectacular performance! I've never seen a viola the shape of yours before. Who is the maker? What size is it? Thank you for sharing your music with the world!
It worked 😂
Do you have an iizuka viola?
There’s something very familiar about the tension throughout the piece, but especially in the second movement- this is excellent work. One can certainly feel the resolution and it is exquisitely reminiscent of life experiences many of us have in common right now.
Truly beautiful playing, David. And what a feat! No music, no edits, just an awe-inspiring live performance. If this was the standard, there wouldn't be many videos posted! I'll have to check out Baumforth. What a lovely instrument. Congrats!
beautiful sound thank you
Wow, gorgeous!!
@ David Rose - Is it worth the money for a true die hard Indy fan (I'm a professional Cosplayer for a movie theater I work for and Indiana Jones is my core character.) Even though I may not crack whips, is it worth the money for a collector?
Hi Zach, I can offer some advice, although you might get a more nuanced response from some of the Indiana Jones Facebook groups. Anyhow, if you do cosplay professionally, I would imagine you'd want a nice looking whip - which would cost at least 200 dollars to get something that looks close to the real thing. If you're going to drop that kind of coin....in my feeling I'd dig a bit deeper and get a really nice 8 or 9 foot whip for 500 or so. The cheaper ones look ok, but my understanding is that they don't hold up to cracking as well as the durable ones made for the films and by reputable makers like Steve. As long as you're not totally strapped for cash, I'd dig deeper and get a nice one...which would at least allow you the option to learn to crack it (which is strangely very fun and gratifying!).
Hello Prof.Rose, I am very impressed by watching your performance videos on youtube. Could I possibly have your email adress regarding lesson?
Nicely done! Been a viola player now for 5 years as an amateur and I can understand the difficulty of this piece. Are you playing a 18" viola? Mine is smaller (15.5) and honestly it doesn't sound as great as yours!
Hi David, Thank you for your comment. The viola I am playing is 16 and 5/8, but the string length is actually rather short for a viola of that size. The viola was made that way to be a bit more comfortable and playable. I tried an 18 inch viola once....I lasted about 45 seconds!....before having to put it back on the table. My back ached! This piece is so wonderful, isn't it?
Amazing whip, do you happen to remember what length this one was? I'm looking to get one exactly like it 🙌
Hi there, this is 8 feet in cow leather I think. Take care.
Hii. What is the size of your viola ?
Hi Guilherme, The viola I am playing is 16 and 5/8, but the string length is actually rather short for a viola of that size. The string length is 14.5, but would probably over 15 inches for a typical viola of this size.
Bellissimo suono di viola 💕
Thank you! :)
Thank you! I found this video trying to learn how to cover the fifth
I hope it helped somewhat. I used to really, really hate fifths. I'm growing to like them now (slowly!). Have a great day :)
I love your Bach interpretations, so stylish and musical. Bravo!
Thank you Frank for the kind comment. Have a lovely day.
Great!! Pinchas Zukerman talked to me about this many years ago: The concept of FRAME and BALANCE. He was mentioning it in the context of sound and of much richer vibrato, but that we might have to adjust a bit to play faster. This way most double-stops are always in tune, we move the hand much less for adjusting to the different intervals and things feel more centered in the hand because of the distribution of the weight.
Zukerman is an unbelievably great model for finding a hand frame which maximized sound and vibrato. I think I probably still watch at least one video of him per month....just to admire the approach he had to the fingerboard (and also the bow arm).
Excellent
Thank you!
Any violins from this luthier?
Hi there, Yes I know that Alan and Sarah Baumforth do make violins. They are super people and make wonderful violas. I believe their son is now a maker also.
Great sounding viola. Who's the maker?
The maker of this viola is Alan Baumforth, and it was made in 1996. He's still making, along with his wife Sarah, and their son is making instruments now also.
Great playing!!
Thank you!
Now, this is CONTINUOUS vibrato, and it's GREAT. But... Have you done a video on how to learn or teach HOW to vibrate? Having had mostly an arm vibrato this continuous vibrato doesn't quite work or it's very tiresome. I spent years trying to change to wrist it and got some results. But this WON'T work unless people know how to vibrate correctly. Probably you already did and I just didn't find it.
Hi there, I haven't done a video on just vibrato. There are a bunch of so wonderful ones out there, but I hadn't seen the continuous one pop up as much. You should check out Max Baillie's videos on vibrato. They are really detailed and excellent. He's a terrific musician and violist!
You are a great player. You play very beautifully. Amazing sound. Not the greatest looking instrument, but probably very useful, and it's not a bad sounding viola. Also, you are a very articulate teacher.
Haha....yeah this viola does raise eyebrows. If you see it from the back, it has a kind of cleft underneath the chinrest (like a heart). It's an unusual design, but actually makes playing up high so much easier, and even 3rd position on the lower strings. I'm glad you liked the video!
I have a question what kind of viola is that because it looks different from most? ( if it is not rude)
Hi there - definitely not rude! This viola design has a functional purpose (to make it easier to play up high, like some guitars have a half circle cut away....same idea). It was made by Alan Baumforth, a maker who lives near Seattle.
@@DavidWilliamRose how much was it and is he selling any?
@@dinonuggies7976over ten thousand looking at the maker. I have a copy made by Eastman called the Pietro Lombardi Tertis that sounds good for around 3k. It’s not close in quality but on the cheaper side
Iizukas made to order for how much? Projecting/resonance issues almost sound solved, worth it just for the ergonomics too.
Hi there - this viola is not an Izuka, but made by Alan Baumforth. He still makes violas (he and his wife Sarah). It is very resonant, and does project very well. The Izukas are so lovely also. I've never met one which didn't sound wonderful.
Hi David Rose, I was wondering how you go about performing Bach? Would you say most of your ideas are carefully planned out and rehearsed, or do you sometimes go off of feeling in the moment? My Bach mostly feels off the whim and I would love to hear what your performance mindset is like while playing Bach! Jack
Hi Jack, I would say that how they end up sounding in concert is about 95% prepared. It's hard to talk about it terms of numbers. The faster movements are such that there is more danger in being spontaneous....and those are more determined. The slower mvts are perhaps more flexible. I would say that most ideas are carefully planned and prepared....yes, that is very safe to say.....and within that planning, a small amount of room for freedom. It's a paradox, eh? A freedom which seems improvised, but is actually mostly planned out. The longer I play these things, the more freedom I feel to change plans in concert, but that process is really slow. I try not to think as I play (it's a deadly thing to do), but do think about certain motions and how to approach the viola before playing, and on final notes and whatnot. The rest is kind of programmed in I suppose. Before playing the cycle of all six, I play them through twice per day for 2 weeks - and I DO NOT STOP for anything. I'll fix stuff that happened between the run throughs. In preparing that way, I can slip into a trance when performing - and the time flies by. Take care, and enjoy the journey!! :)
@@DavidWilliamRose wow super impressive being able to play the cycle! Thank you for sharing your brilliant thoughts. Jack
