The Final Ascent: Deaths on Everest and The Dyatlov Pass | Ep. 44 Part 1 | The Goblin Squad Podcast
Winter is upon us in the Northern Hemisphere! As the long dark descends, join The Goblin Squad in a riveting (and slightly horrifying) two-part episode on the perils of cold weather exploration. It’s finally time, gobs. Mount Everest. It’s happening.
In part one of this week’s episode, we talk about one of the most fascinating and disturbing truths about the great mountain…what happens if you don’t survive your attempt to summit. Keep in mind, gobs, these were real people in real events, and even though we are able to laugh throughout this episode, we mean absolutely no disrespect towards the deceased or their surviving family members. Mountaineers are the most hardcore of the summiting world and Mount Everest will prove to you that she is still in charge after you listen to this episode.
We discuss the winding tale of three individuals connected by an unexpected thread after they pass away on the mountain. While you listen, raise a glass in toast to those that have become famous after they perished while trying to reach the top of the world.
This episode is available in both audio and video format! Woohoo! But don’t forget to join us for Part 2 covering another harrowing and mysterious occurrence in the harsh climates of the North, The Dyatlov Pass Mystery. Please help us out by rating and reviewing this podcast and subscribing on all platforms. We continue to create because of you, Gobs! Also, special shout out to Brooke (because she can’t stop me from writing this, since I’m in charge of the show notes) who has done all of the work editing this podcast. She is amazing and never gives herself enough credit for her fantastic skills. Shower her with love and affection because she is a Goblin Queen.

There are TOO MANY Everest resources to list…however, if you would like to begin your journey, especially pertaining to the story around Mark Inglis and David Sharp, we recommend this short doc: Everest Left for Dead: The David Sharp Story

I’m obsessed with Everest lore and this was such a good podcast. I’ve never heard the stories about Ian Woodall. That’s so interesting! Thank you for that

You can’t bury people up on Mount Everest. It’s frozen rock. Everybody who tries to climb Everest goes up knowing there’s a 25% chance of death and if u do die there’s a good chance you’re staying in the mountain. It’s too dangerous for rescues and for bodies to be carried down but selfish people want that high so they put themselves and others in danger for the same high that opiate addicts chase.

By the time you summit, your body is in such bad shape that all you can do is the bare minimmum. Stopping to help could guarrentee your death.

Strange question: are you both from the northern US? My namesake is a character I made from DND, and he spoke with a Wisconsin accent. This seems too serendipitous!

Smell the river birch trees! Those are the best. And my summer/fall goal is to find an inky cap mushroom again and use the ink to paint a pretty picture. :)

I was having the worst day ever at work and decided to sequester myself to the conference room and work on a purely physical task while listening to my Mark Sandman station on Pandora. But I couldn't fricken log in because the conference room computer is so dumb. I literally picked a noun (GOBLIN) and searched for a podcast about that noun. I saw OSTARA in your video description and was hella happy to give it a listen. HOLY FRIGGIN' HAPPY TOWN! Yes, this shit is bananas. Yes, it was interesting. YES! It was witchy and educational. Did I know some of the stuff? Sure. But did i know it like i think i did? Nope. Thank you for fixing not just my day, but my whole energy. I love laughing more than i love other people's dogs - so, A LOT. And y'all gave me the laughs in such a fun way today. Shhh

Was fun to watch. You both have good charisma. I would just say you have a lot of jump cuts to one another. Made my brain a little wiggy. But overall good job!

Thanks for the feedback! We made some changes for the next episode where instead of jump cuts we are doing a split screen so that should help with the motion sickness of it all. Thank you sooooo much for supporting the pod!
