Channel started: 28th February 2022
Motto:
"Sometimes a bad game can be a very entertaining and good video. On the other hand, making a boring video of a great famous game is easier, than making a good, entertaining video."
Goals:
1) Document C64-games in form of a video for next generations
2) To share pokes, cheats, tips and tricks you can do in C64-games
3) Encourage others to share their pokes, cheats and feedback in comments
4) Help keeping C64-hobby alive for myself, and hopefully other enthusiasts around the world
5) Bring colorful, entertaining, totally non-political videos to anyone looking for something positive to watch
IN LONG RUN: hopefully be able to unite people interested in classic games around the world!

Good old times... 😅
Da musst du noch viel üben, das du meine Rekorde schlägst. Biathlon unter einer Minute.
I love it.....❤
Hit the nostalgic bone with this one buddy
Winter games, world games and summer games were sooooo good
Hours spent playing this in my youth along with California games..and one id like to see reviewed called caveman Olympics also on Commodore 64
When I was 16, this was a PS5. 😂
Biathlon was my favourite event, great game from the past 🏅
That was a blast from my childhood! Haven’t heard the word “poke” in donkeys years 😂
Still a great game in my opinion
Ahhh 1 hourto load 10seconds to crash, good times.
the games in my day were lame compared to todays , manic miner vs red dead 2
Development in games has been amazing. I feel people my age are lucky to have seen it from the very beginning from early classics (first Pac Man, Centipede, Defender and such) all the way to the modern games we see today.
@finnishretroguy9952but those Epyx Games are Milestones in the Game History. There was never ever a Sports Game after those Games who where so good. Not on PC , not on Mobile and not on Console.
Yes, for sure. There is something very special in these Epyx sports games, which keeps you trying again and again, even after so many years. I believe one of the things is playing together with up to 8 friends in the same room, the social gathering of it. With modern online gaming, yes, you play against many other people through the net, but still typically sit alone in your room.
@finnishretroguy9952 yeah in the past we 4-6 friends would meet in a home everybody with his PC. We order Pizza 🍕 and Coke and play Games in LAN-Partys like Tiger Woods Golf, Battlefield, Medal of Honor and other Games for a Weekend.
We also used to have such game meetings. Despite of carrying plenty of desktop-PCs and monitors around the town, those were good times! Unfortunately, today's online gaming is missing this side of the fun.
Was it not return and space bar (4 fast heli) maybe joystick as well?
Holding return with joystick direction will launch "turbo copter".
$h1t I'm 17 again! What a memory jog. Just the intro tune took me back. I dread to think how many joysticks I got through back then, cos with those games it was so about the wiggle.
Hours of my childhood
Fond memories, eh?
Armourdillo, Sector 90, Metranaut, Morpheus, Rapid Fire, Round the Bend, On the Tiles.
All others correct, except Morpheus is wrong. Well done. I thought these are difficult ones.
Cool! The tricks I tried seem to work here. Thanks!
3:22 wasn't this a official port of jr Pac-Man?
Yes it is. Jr. Pac Man.
@finnishretroguy9952also, why is super Pac-Man, ms Pac-Man, and Pac-Man here?, they aren't knock-offs.
Yes, you are right. Maybe I should think of a better title for this video. Now it's a bit misleading I guess.
Something I'll never understand: The game is set in the American west, but the train in the game is European. The cover art correctly depicts an American train, but then you get into the game and it's a European train. I understand that the developers were either from the UK or Europe, but why set the game in America, and then not use American trains? This seems to have been a common thing with all UK/European developers. If I were making a game that was set in Europe, I would try to make everything in the game look as appropriate to the setting as possible. I wouldn't stock the game world with recognizably American things. It's not as if it was hard to find pictures of railroads from other countries back in the 80s.
This is one of the C64-games from Firebird, which was a software house in the UK.
I always liked the graphics in the Thundervision version better, as the graphics in the US Gold version always looked a little squished to me. It's interesting that both versions replaced the arcade version's skeleton enemy with a ghost on the raised portion of the Doomdome level. The Thundervision version had at least two more level skips, copied from the arcade. One was on like 5th or 7th level, you had to grab the hat, then go to the back corner and jump before the hat wore off. It was fairly hard to do with the twitchy controls. Sadly the Thundervision version seems to have a bug where it crashes on the level level. It draws it in, then goes to a black screen. At least the pirated version does. I never saw an original. In fact, it may have been unreleased, so there may not be an "original". Unless some programmer can look at it and figure out why it crashes, we'll never be able to play it to the end. Not that I'm good enough to get that far. I had to use unlimited lives to discover that it crashes.
Thundervision has 3 built-in cheats IIRC. All from the coin-op version.
Звук бомба временная 😊
Just one important difference i could spot - enemies in the second version move more smoothly. Thats about it.
Cool comparison! This was the second-best game at the skating rink in 1984! (They had a sit-down Atari Star Wars.)
When I was at school, I was always taught to plug a joystick in to port 1 and wiggle it to make the creatures dance.
both have points but even i am C64 human i say SMS looked generally better only few things i disagree.
Caverns of Sillahc ?
Yes, correct! Good work. Sillahc is backwards the name of the game programmer: A. CHALLIS. The speech synth in the end of the video tries to reveal the game name, but is somewhat unclear. As an additional puzzle, I changed the map from horizontal to vertical on the video. Caverns of Sillahc is the game here!
I fell in love with this game when I played the C64 conversion way back when. Very hard but still a very faithful port. The SMS version looks and plays very nice, but sadly it's missing half of the Arcade soundtrack (it has only 8 out of 15 tracks).
Almost similar in level design, SMS has much more vibrant color pallete, and thats about it. Very good conversion for the C64
This game looks so similar to Fort Apocalypse, but clearly it's not that one.
No, it is not Fort Apocalypse. The video leads you to the correct game name if you watch closely.
0:29 Pysgnosis. They didn't even take the time to spell-check the intro.
Yes, that is interesting. Funnily I never noticed that, until now when I was editing this video...
I know this one from AMIGA, but never played it on C-64. Thanx for the upload.
god I'm so confused - got reminded of this game from a Facebook marketplace advert and recognised the box art. Then looked up the game but had no memory of ever playing it and chalked it off to it perhaps being one of many games I owned that never loaded - but now that I see gameplay video I vaguely remember the faces at the bottom with the orbs around them, but still don't recognise the gameplay
I did the same thing as a kid. I drew parts on a paper, then recreated them in a painting software like Koala Painter. Much less detailed as here but it was on a much smaller scale, and I was able to print it on two pages matrix papers
Very nice games in technical terms. They are using complex sprite multiplexers to get those large monster figures and many other characters in addition to, instead of lame option of using sprite doubling.
"off course" -> "of course"
I would love to see an explanation on how they coded levels like 9:25 , with parallax scrolling and all. Also music is great on later levels.
It's just sprites and varying the speed certain parts of the screen scroll at.
Basically, the overworld graphics are composed of sprites on top of multicolor character graphics, except for a band where the sprites are underneath character graphics (the tree tops where the trees are characters and the clouds are sprites). On any given scanline, there are only two layers of parallax - the sprite layer and the character layer. In theory, you can have up to 8 different sprite layers, but these will individually be as narrow as a sprite (which can be up to 6 characters wide, when X doubled). The sprite shared multi-colors are medium grey and white, except at the bottom band where they're black and light grey (I think). The character shared colors are black, brown, and light green, with foreground colors being green at the top band, yellow for the middle band, and I'm not sure about the bottom band. Most of the raster interrupt effects are for different X scroll offsets and sprite multiplexing (only 8 sprites, but you can reuse them multiple times as the raster scans down the screen). One annoying limitation is that X-scroll is limited to only 8 pixels. If you want to scroll further than that, then you must scroll the actual characters in memory. This practically means that each character row must have the same scroll speed. You can't easily split a character row into more than one parallax scrolling speed.
@@IsaacKuo thank you for the explanation.
Looks fantastic! If only the gameplay were more enjoyable. It's telling that the Beast games gave you progressively more and more attack range.
I am on the fence about which looks better, the Amiga version, or the TurboGrafx CD version. Unfortunately looking nice is all the game has going for it. Once you figure out where all the items you need are at. You can literally beat the game in 5 minutes.
Damn that looks good for C64. Good performance, too. Must be the limited color palette making it possible or something. Also yeah it looks really difficult.
has nothing to do with the palette ..... it only sported 16 colours in total
@d-one-and-only it's clearly not making use of those in most scenes I have seen. But that might be coincidence, sure.
Good graphics rubbish game
Looks fantastic but its too hard, i dont think anybody can play it without a cheat.
Hmm ... I recognize Skyfox, and the weird game with the bouncing leg and ball, but I don't remember the name of the latter. I'm pretty sure the only one of these I've actually played is Skyfox (original NTSC version).
Yes, Skyfox is correct!
Not a bad idea, but the gameplay feels disconnected. I mean, you move for like 2 seconds and then wait another 10 to get from the tunnel, then repeat it.
what a rubbish game
Well, I always liked it. Difficult, but fun.
I had forgotten all about these two turtle games. Thanks for the video!
I frequently found myself going for a round of Supacatchatroopa throughout all the years I had the C64. It had this eery vibe of being part of a much larger world with the pterosaurs in there 👌
A superb graphics design with parallax layers, obviously late c64 game.
Pretty similar 2 games, not sure why was 87 version needed, it doesnt seem to bring anything new to the gameplay or design. But, are there more levels or just this one?
There are more levels, but still quite similar they are. In Atari version you can select from which level to start. In Ocean version you go to the beginning after game over.
Another very entertaining video of classic video games. Thanks!
