Part Seven of the WHIO TV tribute to Anchorman Don Wayne, after his retirement
Was this clip from February 12, 1982 or February 15, 1982?
It is a shame how Xenia lost SO MUCH for nice old buildings and homes and then rebuilt in a really screwed up way. Used to be such a nice quaint small town. Now it is just your typical redneck town and all the mess that comes with it. Not much to see and not much reason for people to want to come here to say the least.
Tomorrow will be 50 years…
I was 8 in 1974 but I remember seeing the damage on the helicopter footage on Walter Cronkite and I was like "Wow." I had never seen anything like it.
The first F-6 !
It was downgraded to an F5. Lubbock in 1970 was the other one initially rated F-6.
I was a couple of months away from my 8th birthday & over at my grandmothers where a relative was visiting, Mom was there too, they (adults) were in the kitchen, talking about things 20-40 year old ladies talked about in the 70's.... I was standing in my sock feet looking out of the large picture window at Gram's house then I see papers & stuff falling out of the sky (if you measure a straight line from my grandmother's home to Xenia... it's about 43 miles away to the SSW. The window faces the NNW. I yelled into them about stuff falling out of the sky.... they thought, I think that I was bored & making stuff up... it irritated me, so a little more hysterical sounding I said something like, "Look, I'm serious, there's weird stuff falling out of the sky... papers and, I don't know dark papers? But they're torn weird.... I think something's wrong!" finally, they came in laughing until they noticed the papers and what they identified as shingles... so they turned on the TV and changed channels and turned on a radio, finally my mom called my dad's Patrol post (he was in the Ohio State Highway Patrol) to ask them if they knew what was going on... They told them about the tornadoes. Then one of the channels cut into the program that was on... etc... it was a trip.....
Thanks
As a 17 year old boy in Ohio I know about this storm in a semi-personal way. Our family had been watching the news about the storm on the old tv. It was just awful what happened to the town and people there. Anyway about a week and a half ( there or about) after the storm I was walking back in the property in the woods of our land. It was a good sized wooded area. Any way I was following the creek back that ran thru there. The creek was framed by two hills on either side, and smack in the middle of the western hill was a white dot. I was several thousand feet away and walked up to it. And low and behold it was a canceled check from one of the banks from Xenia! Pretty shocking as we lived 157 miles northeast from Xenia. It had traveled that far on wind currents from their town. I took it home and handed to my father and he was just dumbstruck by it. It hung on his office bulletin board for a couple years after that! With personal info blacked out of course, made for some interesting conversation for years!
Who is doing the voice over in the beginning. I recognize his voice as he did the voice for KMSP TV in Minneapolis.
Would it not found out later it was 2 or3 Twitters at once I may be wrong . I say we may be it about due for one
I lives in Xenia I was 11 and it missed our house. I had a Xenia Lives t shirt and wore it all the time. My sister had a Xenia Jr. High T shirt. And if your from Xenia at that time you know they combined both Jr high schools into one until Central was rebuilt. So that shirt was kind of rare.
Heidi Sonen is such a babe. I could watch her just talk for hours.
“So SOHIO everyone!”
Marie looked beautiful on your 💒 day
Spoild.
Thanks for uploading. As the world turns was such fun. Julee was the resident tart.
R.I.P. Ken Jeffersonn.
That’s the first thing I thought when I started watching this. He was taken from this world too soon.
Wow how nice that was it was very beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for leaving in the commercials. I remember the days when a new car would rust out (in a snowy climate where the streets were salted) within 3-4 years. You had to take it to "Ziebart" to get it undercoated to prevent that. And it didn't work for all that long anyway.
Good program.
Remembrance and thankfulness. I drove through Xenia 15 minutes before it hit. Being from Ohio, I was no stranger to tornadoes, having near misses on another 2 occasions. Guess someone was watching over me.
I was a teenager...in Miamisburg High that day. We had a tiny 10 watt FM radio station at the school. I went home after school to grab a couple of records I wanted to play on the station. As I was walking into the school, I looked to the south and thought, "Somebody is going to get a heck of a storm". I went into the school and went on the air. We had an agreement with WFCJ-FM that they would call us if something big happened, since they had a teletype (something way beyond a high school's budget). The operator on duty advised that there was a tornado warning for Montgomery and Greene counties till 5 pm. I put that information on the air. 30 minutes later, they called me back. Said, "You know Xenia?" I said, "Yes". Their operator said, "Well, at least half of it is gone". I said, "Gone?" He said, "Yes, a giant tornado just hit". Some of my high school classmates were volunteer ambulance drivers who rushed into Xenia to give aid. How ironic. I work for WHIO radio today.
Interesting side note about the Louisville tornado....there was actually a live traffic reporter in the air while the tornado hit Louisville. Here's a video containing the audio of the reports: ua-cam.com/video/5orxm6fDKWQ/v-deo.html
Xenia has a beautiful downtown.
If you have any clips of Meg and Josh from Atwt plz post them. I loved them!
My aunt lost both legs in this tornado in xenia, she was 60 years old.
Did she ever end up finding them? I hope so!
I think the quality of this video was hit by a tornado...
It is from an old VHS. You are lucky it's this good!
@@lhellmund exactly thanks for posting, i was 12 when the storm hit back in 74 so i'm pushing 60 with aches and pains but i'm still here and capable of walking snd shooting some ball. we were out playing baseball on a sunny day around 4.pm after school here in Dayton Ohio 25 miles south of Xenia. we lived in a residential neighborhood with a basement, the skies started to darken and it was scary and as we we noticing my mom called me in because of tornado warnings that were going up, she demanded i come in now, so i did and we scurried to the basement, only then did we even here the sirens.. i wanted to see the funnel cloud if possible but mom wouldnt even allow me to go up stairs to bathroom, had to use the sink in the basement. it was probably to dark to see it anyway, we dodged a bullet, only lost power for about half hour and it rained heavily. a half hour later the sun was back out. i didnt here of the fatalities until the next day. we didnt think it would ever hit Dayton due to being in the valley but it did back in 2019 momorial day, it hit in the night skies so i still didnt see it although some recorded it with there phones during the lightning strikes,, several funnel cl;ouds we lost two people due to the storms and lots of property was destroyed in parts of the miami valley, uprooted trees and shingles roof damage where i now reside.. so just seeing this devastation is appreciated , it gives U a clearer idea of what those folks had to endure who lived there, me and a team of guys went to xenia in 1980 to build houses and we were told some tales about that horrific night the devils finger came into play.
@@darnellanders8768 Loved your story....can identify with the aches and pains at age 55.
@@mikejohnson515 yeah mine started at around 57 and it's getting worst although I'm in fairly good shape..gain some weight during the pandemic but lost five pounds since spring.. Exercises R very important in curving the pain. I think its early signs of arthritis... Or joint pain...its worst in the morning from the time I awaken but as the day go on it gets better .a friend of mine had such pain in his leg because of blood clots. He drank everyday and they had to amputate that particular leg..they did test on my leg and found just Slight clotting.. I also have given up tomatoes that will help flare up the pain ..although I am older not old I feel old at times..I refused to take any pain medicine all I take is high blood medicine. Tylenol. .also a water pill..helps to flush U out along with a laxative is always good . just exercise daily to strengthen your bones.drink fresh water and try to avoid stress smoking and alcohol.
Every time I go past that building I remember this Wedding
I just watched your video, "Mork Marries Mindy," and i wanted to make a comment, but comments are turned off. Why?
In the Mormon church you are married for eternity she's gonna have a crowded house on the other side
All marriage Sealings are done on earth, also in most cases, you're only sealed to your first sealed spouse (though I'm spacing whether there's an exception for males?)
Had to love Don. A Dayton legend.
The only building that didn't get wiped out, but still partly wiped out. 🤔
L Hellmund, Someone upload the December 11, 1992 Commercial Breaks - WHIO (CBS, Dayton) video on UA-cam.
God bless osmond family and Marie as steve!!!!!
Can you believe that Marie and Stephen were married for three years and had a son together, then they split up and she marries Brian Blosil and has seven other kids, and then she divorced him and fell back in love with Stephen and decided to remarried again back 2011?
Loved the headpiece on her veil
Did Blosil re-marry?
@@mrsTraveller64 I’m not sure about that fact!
So sorry for these people's loss. I remember that day well in Midway, KY near Frankfort. The sky was kind of greenish yellow I seem to recall. Though just a kid, I'm nearly positive I saw "ball lightning" roll across my yard (golf ball size). Only time I've ever seen it but it makes sense because of the crazy high charge in the air that day.
Marie was a stunning bride!!!
I agree. She was a very stunning bride. So beautiful!!!!!
Where was I? I was 7 years-old living in Richmond, Indiana. We had a tornado warning also, I remember my mom taking us into the hallway of the house while my dad went outside to watch for it.
I lived in Richmond back then to.I was 14.
I was in the First Grade when this happened
We just had another scare this year on April 3 2018.
May I upload this on my UA-cam channel?
My dad just left the high school right as this hit. He was a senior in high school that year
WSB-TV videotape both of Channel 7's Coloradar 1974 and 1978!
Sure wish there was videos of the "bad Carrie ".
I knew one of the girls who had been at Xenia HS. She graduated, and was a couple years behind me at Miami University.
The transition from winter to spring does bring severe weather. Tornadoes are common during the spring and summer months.
Yeah they were the lucky ones to move off the stage in the auditorium... I read where a few buses landed on the stage from the high winds..its sad that 33 folks lost there lives some due to center blocks crushing them...
22:40 Roberds had five local locations and the massive location in North Dayton, near Vandalia is now an entertainment/gaming facility called Scene 75 (Vandalia location)... 23:34 RIP Hara Arena (Closed in August 2016)... 38:01 the WayToGo.com website still redirects to DPandL.com (Dayton Power and Light Co.) two decades later...
The Scene75 building was actually a Levitz showroom.
Brad Boehringer Oh wow, you're right! Talk about age lol
Excuse Me, I'm out of the past in Dayton Television. Do you have WHIO back in 1995?
I remember that day. I still live in Middletown,Ohio. I remember the sky in Middletown looked very strange. We was not hit at all, but Lebanon and Monroe had some damage.
As an 11 year old, I remember seeing the funnel cloud going over Middletown, but at the time had no clue what the "funny looking" cloud was.
