    I’m building a 4-53t for my square body Chevy, I have 3 engines hopefully to Make one good one, the engine I’m currently tearing down now is a 4-53 na out of a railroad machine. None of them are silver series. But was wondering if theirs a difference in the rods a cranks from non turbo to turbo? I’m assuming the blocks don’t have anything different to them. Also noticed that this block is a Mexico block the other 2 are Brazil blocks and the Detroit logos on them are the circle arrows with the Detroit diesel in the center vs this Mexico block just has the 2 arrows in a circle with no lettering in the center must just be a older block? All 3 engines are 4 valve engines. Any help is appreciated thanks.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430 2 дні тому

      Yes there's a difference in rods, cam, pistons and block. The pistons are 18.7:1 ratios on the T engine and 21:1 on the N engines. Con rod piston pins are larger in diameter on the T engines, 1.5" compared to 1.375" on the N. Block on the T engines are built stronger and the rear is closed off in the airbox section. You can build a T engine with an N block by changing rods and using the N cam. Blower is also 15% larger on the N engine, which also can be used on the T. I think you can still buy 1.375" wrist pin T pistons, but I've never looked into it. I converted an 3-53N to a 3-53T and it runs very nice, just changed the rods and pistons, kept everything else.:)

      @@kalebhanson9808 The N and T heads are the same with the T heads having T valves. Most of the new valves are all T valves now. The Silver head differs as it's cast with dog bone cavities in it. This prevents cracking that plagued the N and T heads. I'm picking up another Silver 4-53T this weekend and with any luck the owner finds the head. I'll be making a video on the differences between N, T and Silver versions of the 4-53 series.:)

    So, as noted on Bobistheoilguy, I have modified my M100D. Next up is the orifice/restrictor. I was wondering what size orifice you use on motor oil? I have ordered aluminum 1/8 npt plugs so that I can easy use my hand held pin vise and wire drill bits if the hole needs to be smaller than 1/16. I plan to tap the end of the 1/4 npt fitting that screws into the port of the M100 for 1/8 npt and insert my custom orfiice. So far this is the method I have envisioned. I would appreciate any insight into this you could provide! And thanks for the advise and help you provided below.

      For my converted M30's I've used .032" orifices and that works well. If I'm not mistaken Frantz used .050". I can't remember what size the M100's are, but very similar to Frantz, 040"-050".

    Hi. Do you have an email I can contact you at? I have a 4-53T Silver that has been sitting around for a while and I am trying to get running. One of the cylinders has a stuck valve. Do you have any tricks to freeing it up without removing the cylinder head? Thanks in advance! Pat

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430 11 днів тому

      Sure, emerald310@gmail.com. I'd use a penetrating oil on the stuck valve, remove the exhaust manifold as well and spray from the bottom up. I like to move the rocker arms away from the valves and tap the valve with a soft hammer. Can rotate the engine slowly with a bar to push the valve back up. A few times like that and it should free up.

    I love Detroit engines, all the way through the Series 60. Don't much care for the DD13 & DD15 of later years; I'm sure they are good, just not a Detroit to me. As I have gotten older, (63), I find the noise is a little much anymore. The last 2 strokes I overhauled were 8v92's, they were actually pretty quiet compared to that 2-53.

      The DD13/15/16 are basically rebadged Mercedes-Benz OM471/472/473 engines, respectively. 2 rings + 4 rings = 6 channels. I believe that all of this leads to friction and wear on the shirt. This technology is used in ship engines to this day. But the 4-stroke engine has the advantage of having only 3 rings and less heavy pistons.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430 14 днів тому

      True, these are steel pistons compared to the aluminum pistons used on most 4-strokes. Detroit later replaced this piston design with a crosshead design which uses one less compression ring. Little Jimmy sure starts nice with the 21:1 N pistons in it. I swear it makes more noise from the blower/intake than from the tailpipe. Any oil analysis yet?

      Yeah it runs real nice, no oil analysis yet, might take a sample in another 10-15 hrs.

    She's running great!!!!! You should try putting commom rail injection on a Detroit! A guy did it to a 8v92 on "OL2Stroker" youtube channel using Duramax injectors. Thanks!

      Yeah Jason's Fat cab is pretty sweet. He's running two CP3 pumps from a Duramax from what I gather, very nice setup.:)

    Great video, but where did all the WVO processing go? It used to be there in the shop near the oil stove and I don't see it anymore!

      Thanks, I moved the system down near the entrance.:) Gives me room to store the dyno where the tanks used to be.:) I'll be posting an update video on Little Jimmy soon and you can see the tanks in the video.:)

    Are you still planning on calling the Diamond T “bent metal”? Even though you are putting in new sheet metal for the cab extension and extending the fenders.

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430 17 днів тому

      Yes, there's plenty of bent metal with the added stretch.:)

    Watching these videos brings back so many memories of Detroit Diesels I've worked on during my career. Boats (mostly), equipment, generators.. you name it. Got to see some pretty cool places with the ability to diagnose and repair them. I can almost smell that peculiar smell International Compound #2 had after being run in a Detroit. You know you know. 😆

    Rescue mission if ever there was. What is the new parts supply situation like for things like heads and oil coolers etc like? Bearing date Feb 1978......must have been in service for at least 30 years. Amazing that you got as much recoverable parts as you did ))

    • @detroitgarage9430
      @detroitgarage9430 18 днів тому

      Yes all the parts are still available if one were to rebuild it. Lots of both new and used oil coolers, heads, cranks and cams are sold through PCIndustries and others.:)

    Send those pistons and liners to Pakistani Truckers and they will use them up the rest of the way! LOL!!! Thanks!

      @detroitgarage9430 18 днів тому

      Lol, that would be something.:) I've considered throwing a 4-53 together with junk parts and see how well it runs on the dyno.:) Too many projects to complete, so for now just a pipe dream.:) Or nightmare.lol

      @@detroitgarage9430 I bet it would surprise you on how well it would run as long as the compression was good. It might make you kick yourself for trying to be so perfect! LOL!!!
