Awesome! 👍
Thanks for watching!:)
How do you get your parts, the right part numbers? Do you have a parts book or is there somewhere on the internet where you can see an exploded view of things and order them? Thanks for this video. Very helpful.
I use PCIndustries and subscribe to there enhanced diagrams when ordering parts. I pay for a month to get the exploded views and make my order. As I really only order parts every couple of years, it's worth it.:) www.powerlinecomponents.com/categories.php?manufacturer=Detroit%20Diesel&series=53%20Series
Keep it. Fix it up and get it running! Nice engine.👍
Thanks, I plan on putting it back together and running it on the dyno.
It’s a parade of beautifulness coming out of the shop!
Where are you located roughly? I have a 4-71 I’m looking to get rid of. I’m in Bellingham near white rock BC
I'm 4hrs North in Kelowna.:)
@ too far? It’s in a compressor. Works. I can give you more info if interested
@@leslymora9282 Sure, what compressor is it in?
@ I’ve tried replying a couple times but they disappear… maybe UA-cam doesn’t like links or emails on the comments. Or maybe I cant see my reply… where can I find an email to send a link to?
@@leslymora9282 You can email emerald310@gmail.com.:)
Yours is a shop that looks like a place where work gets done. I watched one of your videos from some years back and there is a difference between then & now. Ya know, I just realized that after having watched quite a few of your videos, I haven't heard your first name. A secret?
Lol no secret, it's Harling Park.:)
Every year, usually in the winter, I have throw away days in my shop. It usually takes about a week to get rid of stuff that just normally piles up when you work in a shop. My shop only has two bays so it’s imperative that I keep the space open to work.
Yeah, it's not something I enjoy, but has to be done.:)
At some point you just have to just do it! I know the feeling. Thanks!
Very true.:)
Just looked up the weight. Between 1000 and 1100 pounds with the cylinder head! For comparison, that's about 25% heavier than a 2001 Duramax V8. I can see why the Detroits find themselves in industrial machines that have to live in extreme conditions, heat, and vibration. It's like a chunk of iron ore ripped from the ground, sculpted a little bit, and painted in midcentury faded puke. Anyway, if no one makes it worthwhile to sell it off in parts, you ought to consider building a generator set with it. If you can't find use for the generator, maybe you can give it to or sell it to someone who needs electricity and noise on demand.
Yeah they're certainly heavy, lot's if not all the responses have been in favor of building back up.:) So looks like that's the plan in the coming weeks. Should be able to find a home for it.:) I like the idea of a generator.:)
SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You could have the loudest slowest Excursion in existence!!!!!!!!
LOl, that would be crazy, pulling the mountain grades@2800 and 40 mph.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 Put a turbo on it and get 45 on the grades! LOL!
Put it in a pickup!
That would be a nice swap for an F150 or Ranger.:)
Save them all! Nice find!
Thanks.:)
I'd like to see you make it run for purely selfish reasons - I just want to hear it. But as I watched this video I was wondering about the market for these small 53 engines. Is there a demand for them?
There's not much of a market left. The odd time I get requests for 4-53T's and 3-53T, but not much for the N's.:) We'll see how well it runs, then try and find a home for it.:)
What’s the down pipe, or in this case up pipe out of? I see it’s sleeved inside…
It's off a 6.4 Powerstroke.:) I'll be cutting the the inner sleeve out to make it a true 4" downpipe.:) It's stainless, so I'll keep it for the down pipe for the Diamond T.:)
Yea looks like it will work just fine
A sickness? I totally get it. I have the same sickness with other things, and since you've got such a good set of parts to work with I'd get it running and put the old guy back to work. You can set it next to your other spare engines until you have one, but I couldn't bring myself to parting it out. If it was junk it would be a different story. That's just me.
Thanks, that's the direction I'm headed.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 HAHAHA. I figured you would.
❤
Very cool find, and way to good to part out. I just don't k ow what I would do with it.
True, it deserves to be put back into running order. Not sure what to do with it, but maybe dyno it for giggles.:)
Dyno it for (non)certified sale
@ Yeah after I finish dyno testing the Silver 4-53T, I’ll test the 3-53.:)
👍
Keep it
Thanks, that seems to be the consensus, so keep it I will.:)
Great project there.Get a mid 2000 year Chevy 1/2 ton with an automatic trans and drop the 353 in it.
Thanks, that would be nice.:)
Save it find a place for it !!
@@markwentland3147 Looks like it’s gettin re-assembled and run on the dyno:). Hopefully I can find a home for it.:)
I worked on a ton of 53 and 71 series engs in the army next to 2cyi jd engs they are my favorites by far by all means save it.
Thanks.:)
Resurrected from the scrap pile!!! I hope someday to have a shop like yours, Detroits all around!
Awesome.:)
Save it and turbo it on your dyno for us.
That's a plan, I have a turbo and manifold, so maybe dyno it and see how it does.:)
Can you make a video talking about how you tune for no smoke? I run my 8v71 with city bus economy injectors (c65s iirc, been a while), got rid of the throttle delay, turbo / intercooler / blower bypass in the plans.
Sure I can do that.:) That would make for a decent video. The key to no smoke is the throttle delay, and tuning.:) Turbo and intercooler are also a huge help.:)
I sure like the sound a Detroit makes. Just a thought, are you at all concerned about those old injectors washing down a cylinder wall?
Yes, that's a concern. I'll be running them for the initial break in on the dyno, then replacing with larger injectors. We'll see how well they do under a load.:)
@@detroitgarage9430 Thanks. I'm really enjoying this channel & look forward to watching the Diamond T project progress! Have a great weekend.
Wow just pull the keeper pin under the spring seat and clean it out all the way
you should go to adape ape cat service guy and look at the detroit he helping with have you ever saw a main bearing do this
Thanks, I'll have to go check it out.:)
Wow, pretty nasty.:) I've not seen that before.:)
Hopefully plans for a big intercooler to go along with the big injectors.
Yes, be running an LB7 intercooler with water meth injection.:)
👍
How many dollars does it take to renovate the entire Detroit 4-53N in the USA? In Brazil it costs around $50,000.00 reais, or around €9,000.00 dollars.
My cost is about $1000-$1200 USD without the labor. Would be close to $7000.00 to $9000.00 to rebuild at a shop.:)
👍
Question for you. I have a couple of Older GMC trucks i am repowering with the 4-53. One was originally equipped with a 4-71. Do you ha e any thoughts on or experience with the 71 series and should i be looking for one ?
The 4-53 should fit well and bolt to the trans you already have. Can't remember if that was an N or T you have? The N is 130-140 HP and the T is 170-175 HP. The 4-71 is 145-160 HP. The 4-53 is lighter and spins faster, so in the end you might not notice the power differences.:)
@detroitgarage9430 mine is an old N. But it doesnot have to stay that way. Anyway I am sure the 53 will be all I need after all I am not expecting it to be a comercial truck..... I was more wondering if the 71 series being the older design was better worse or just differant ? If I happen to find a 4-71 is it worth messing with ? ....or should I got actively looking because they are tons more rugged.... just general opinion of the whole 71 series if you had an opinion.
@@greywuuf The 71 series is the best Detroit made, so yeah if you find one grab it. I really wanted a 4-71T for my original swap, but picked the 4-53T because it was lighter. They're quieter, Jakes are reasonable for them and all round a great engine.:) I have a 6V71 waiting for the day I swap that into something.:)
Ah, the sound of a 53 hunting at first start. Takes me back! Yeah I know it’s just the injectors, but it still brought back the memories! And a 53 at high rpm put a smile on my dial!
That takes me back to 1974 when I was a kid.:) My dad would start up the Hayes HDX 12V71 and it would hunt like that for a few seconds.:) It's amazing how something like that brings back memories.:)
Oh my yes,... me too! I really got to like and enjoy all these engines from the 353 up to the 16V-71 engines we had available in equipment where I really enjoyed my working time, at Blackwood Hodge Equipment in the 1970's.
Loving it, I am going to try and put one of these in my 4th gen ram
That would be awesome.:)
My posts keep disappearing more than 10x below.
I don't know why, nothing in the held folder.
I can stare at a runner like that all day too 😂 Humans and their gadgets. I like how the radiator fan spins so fast you can't even see it. It's like it's not even there!
They're a great engine, that's for sure.:)
Great job at saving this good motor from the scrap pile always enjoy your videos
Thanks for watching.:)
So you not have the bypass on the blower? It looks short to me
No bypass on this one, it's a T blower. I still have to configure the bypass blower for this side of the engine. Just means swapping the gears around, then can be installed. For testing I'll be comparing the T, Silver bypass and N blowers.
@detroitgarage9430 excellant ...and my calibrated eyeball is getting better ;) i almost know what i am looking at.
@@greywuuf :)
Couldn't leave well enough alone huh. Just had to run it some more , can't say as I Blame you

Excellent, thanks!
Thanks for watching!:)
Sounds so sweet!! Awesome job! Thanks!
Thanks.:)
In the spirit of hot rodding you could screw the boost up a bit and build a liquid to air intercooler system. I imagine a compact barrel style, though there are many other shapes. They have pumps and boost reference controllers as well as various sized heat exchangers/radiators. Make for interesting content.
The plan is to break it in on these small injectors, then start adding more fuel.:) Along with the fuel comes more air, intercooler and water meth.:) My goal is 275-300HP smoke free.:) Lot's of dyno testing for this one.:) Just working this week on cleanup and getting the dyno sorted.:)
One of these days, I'd like to use a high performance electronic common rail injection system on one and plumb a compound turbo into the inspection ports of the airbox for blower bypass. I wonder how many revs a silver 4-53t could handle

He is alive. It's my favorite music box. Women make babies. Well, this is a close as we get to making babies. I remember starting my first 353 for my railroad tie crane. Man, he sounds great.
It's sure is a nice feeling, just over a month ago I dragged it out of a field.:)
@detroitgarage9430 Right. Too bad you are not local to south central pa. I my have a few spare parts on the self, and I have tall block 371 that we are going to take out of our old 1959 Jackson maintainer tamper. I will be taking it down to the frame and building a push cart to haul railroad ties.
HP--what is oil pressure--idle? what temp is thermostat?
40 psi at idle with cold oil (80f) and 170f thermostat.
I don't know if you did this during assembly, but do you pressurized the fuel system to check for leaks at the jumper lines? Sounds good.
Yes, I run the engine driven pump with a drill. System is pressurized to 60 psi.:)
Put some ATF in the fuel and pin it for an hour…they’ll fire properly after that!
Yeah, that'll certainly fix it.:) I'll mix a quart into the jerry can for the first run.:)
@ put a quarter of a quart in the oil too…just old fashioned Dextron 3…nothing fancy…she needs a good load and get good and hot…those 453’s love it!..
