EGO Battery Electric Hedge Trimmer
This is my new EGO Hedge Trimmer. Watch me open it and my first use, along with my impressions. Short version: It's more convenient and just as effective as my old plug-in trimmer, but the one thing my old trimmer was really good at was cutting through extension cords, and this one just doesn't do that.

I have a new EGO Power LB6151 leaf blower. In this video, I open it up, give my thoughts about it, and briefly demonstrate it. Key takeaways: * I think it's more powerful than my plug-in electric leaf blower * Buy it with the battery if you don't have a small lightweight battery already * You may want multiple batteries or a larger battery for any big jobs * It's not quiet, but it's not horribl...
Simple Light Switch Replacement
Переглядів 922 роки тому
I replace a light switch that isn't working quite right. This is a pretty simple project that should take between 5 and 15 minutes. Likely the hardest step will be finding the right circuit to turn off. The use of the voltage detector to verify that the power is off is something many would skip, but it's a good safety check, especially if you have older wiring where things can get weird. And wh...

      I think they make mounting kits for them, but I'm not set up to check the temperature on the back side after leaving them on for a while. My recollection is that they're 40W, which is not insignificant. I wish I had a better answer for you, but I'm glad you're thinking though it enough to ask the question.

      My buddy just gave me an $800 outdoor LED fixture and I asked him about the grey and violet wires. He said it's for dimming and the switch is around $100. He's a licensed electrician with like 25 yrs under his belt. I guess he isn't aware how simple this 0-10v stuff is?? Electronics sure are overpriced for what's actually going on under the hood 😂

      EGO doesn't provide a power rating in HP. All I know is that I haven't run into problems where it seems to just not have enough power. The only shortcoming is that the batteries drain faster the heavier the snow is.

    I just bought an Ego blower. To answer your question, I would have to say YES, provided you understand that batteries don't recharge as fast as you can fill a gas tank. You can get extra batteries and keep a set charging while using another set. But that can get expensive. If you normally have to fill up your gas blower more than once to do your driveway You may not want to go electric. If you can't do the job without a gas can you will need at least two sets (4 batteries) and keep one on the charger and one in the blower.

    The prices are insane and need to come way down. There are all kinds of new battery technology coming "down the pike" and they last much longer and should cost much less snd be less of a demand on rare earth minerals which are being depleted raoidly hence the cost of Lithium Ion and variations. Search Diamond Batteries from U.K. and many others from Continental Europe, Canada, Scandanavia, India. Think I'll stick with fuel until things improve.

      The rare earths are in the motors, not the batteries. And they're not really rare, though they do mostly come from China. There have been new technologies just around the corner for years. That corner never seems to get any closer. The battery prices should be dropping, but it appears that instead Ego's profit margins are increasing. That can't last forever.

    Security video at end; NOT for me, especially not without audio! You're not a natural around DIY and mechanics - are you. 😅 But Happy Thanksgiving. I'm sure you can buy a new hedge trimmer cover somewhere online to replace the one you mangled up around thst tbing at the back most of us call an impeller, having left it out before the snow fell 8nstead of putting it wnere it belonged, back on whatever garden tool you left it off. It woukdnt harm to dry off the frosty water from your brand new E=Go dashboard (that's the control panel area) before letting sut there to dru out and leave water marks, as you did - did you buy this with your own money! What's your day job? Look sfter your tools and they'll look sfter you. Tip for shorter folks; when you walk the blower down the drive or sidewalk, don't keep lifting the front as the scraper blade needs to make contact for a really clean job. it takes a while to get used to knowing which knobs and levers to pull and when, doesn't it. Pulling it back while gripping the drive lever is not a good look. 😅 They all have Reverse drive, but that just slows things down, even on a heavy gas model - I tilt it low and pull it backward, up the slope, until I've had enough of the strain and then remember I'm not a kid anymore.😊 Perhaps one of the best things about it is you're no longer spending 1½ hours in the fresh crisp air filtering gasoline fumes with your lungs to keep the countryside cleaner! Who knows how much more risk that puts everyone at for cancer! I bet you it's higher risk than most of us realise, albeit only for a few occasions every winter. I usually come back indoors feeling like I've smoked a 25 pack of full strength full tar Du Maurier! Never the less the prices are insane and need to come way down. There are all kinds of new battery technology coming "down the pike" and they last much longer and should cost much less and be less of a demand on rare earth minerals which are being depleted rapidly, hence the cost of Lithium Ion and variations. Search for Diamond Batteries from U.K. and many others from Continental Europe, Canada, Scandanavia, India, it makes for interesting reading. I think I'll stick with fuel until things improve.

      I think that plastic piece was from someone else's recycling, so nothing for me to replace. This was my first real use of the blower, so I'm sure I wasn't doing everything quite right. Since you asked, yes, I did buy this with my own money. My day job is as a software engineer. I do a horrible job maintaining small gas engines, so while it was expensive, at least I won't have to pay to repair or replace it when I mess up the engine.

  • @r.martin3494
    @r.martin3494 11 місяців тому

    Don't you find the weight of a gas engine helps get the traction needed to push through that snow bank at the end of the driveway and that the battery machine doesn't find the grip as too light?

    0-10V dimming is normally used in commercial buildings. If you are trying to install a new 0-10V dimmer into an existing wall switch, you would need to find a way to install the violet and gray low-voltage control wires from first fixture to wall switch, which entails running these wires down through existing wall to switch. I believe many fixture manufacturer’s make a driver that can be dimmed by a triac dimmer that only requires the hot, neutral and ground wires that attach to dimmer. This would be an easier solution than having to run the two control wires to switch in a residential installation. The three color temperature settings that fixture you have are all in the higher(bluer) color temperature range. Most of these fixtures will have 3000K, 4000K and 5000K or higher, for a wider range from warm to cool. The 3000K is more warm and usually the more preferred color temperature for home use. Some fixtures even have an extra setting where you can change the fixture color temperature by toggling the light switch on and off quickly until you get the desired color temperature. The selected color temperature will become the default when operating normally. You can change the color temperature at any time by toggling the switch on/off quickly again to desired setting. Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s carry these types of edge-lit LED fixtures in many shapes and sizes.

    • @tubro007
      @tubro007 10 місяців тому

      If I understand you correctly; since my light manufacturer sold my light with the 0-10w extra wires i'll need to run them down to the switch, i.e. there isn't some "triac" device i can obtain to send the signal down the existing higher voltage wires in the wall, right?

    ok...a piece of granite. Then the pins did their job. Not a slight on EGO. I have multiple EGO throwers with metal augers and I have ripped the pins. They are fantastic. My main blower is an Ariens Mammoth here in the Sierra Nevada, so they all get their work in. The EGOs are obviously not in the same category as the mammoth, but they are up to the task for where I use them.

      "Only units with date codes from September 2017 through March 2019 are included in this recall." Mine was made in 2022, so I get to keep it. So we'll see if Amazon reinstates the listing, or if EGO releases a different model so people don't see the recall when they search on the product code.

  • @projectwithpreston
    @projectwithpreston Рік тому

    Why did I pick EGO? With battery yard tools, you'll want to stick with one ecosystem. Make your decision around the largest item you're likely to buy. For most people, that's going to be a lawn mower, but in my case, it was a snow blower. I went with EGO because they had one of the best snow blowers and a great range of lawn mowers. Also, EGO has only one battery system, where others have two or three battery lines, locking you into separate consumer or contractor tool lines, and also some have changed their batteries over the years instead of sticking with one. That gives me a lot more confidence that the current battery system will still be supported for many years to come.

Anything like that would probably be grounds for a huge product recall, but then again, with water from snow and electricity, I grant that it is possible, and I certainly don't want to be the case that leads to any sort of recall. THIS IS WHY I LOVE TORO SNOW BLOWERS!! First off the gas versions got rated the best out of any snowblower. Now they made in the past year THE TORO POWERMAX E26 MEANING ELECTRIC 26 TWO-STAGE ELECTRIC BATTERY POWERED SNOWBLOWER!! It's the identical model to the PowerMax 826 gas version except the electric motor. Much better than this ego!! Better made, etc... And it has all the advantages of the gas version other than no gas!! They have NO SHEER PEIN TECHNOLOGY!! WITH A HARDENED GEARS IN THE GEARBOX IN A HARDENED GEARBOX.. What this means is that when you hit something hard the machine stops automatically!! You fix the obstruction turn it back on you're ready to go. No fumbling with shear pins in the issue that you had. People get confused thinking Toro has shear pins But those are actually regular bolts that don't shear!! The quick stick is revolutionary!! People by Toro just for that. Anti-clogging is unbelievable. It throws some snow back out in front of the impeller so it makes the snow lighter So it throws further, puts less stress on the system, the gears in the belts.. Not to mention they are auto steering or power steering differential works fantastic.. Reliability is unbelievable, parts for Toro have been around forever, The machine is easy to fix, The parts are easy available and cheap.. I don't trust Snow Joe, ego when it comes to two-stage electric snow blowers like I trust Toro.. those companies went crazy with all the electronics taking advantage of it. With the way it has the variable speeds for the auger and the drive..( which has not been tested in cold in moist climates ) I could tell you as an electronic engineer fixing electronics forever. When you add circuit boards and stuff like that like ego did in Snow Joe.. It does not do well with moisture and cold weather. You get cold solder joints and all types of issues.. And then when were their parts be available If something breaks? The parts will be very expensive, it'll be hard to fix, it'll be difficult to find and get these parts and how long will the parts be available in the future. Not the case with Toro their parts have been around forever because they're also using the identical same system without changing anything but the electric motor!! Absolutely brilliant.. sticking with something that is always worked forever!! Not to mention the E26 is much quieter than this model you have.. And like I said it's much better made.. And remember Toro is an american-based company they were the first company in history to make the stand behind snowblower For residential use in 1951. In other words Toro knows what matters and knows what doesn't!! Eagle was pretty cool but the PowerMax E26 is the best two-stage battery powered snowblower out there.. The only problem with these type of snow blowers is The batteries. 3 to $400 to replace, they only going to give you great performance for about 3 to 5 years before you need to replace them to keep that performance. With heavy snow or deep snow You're not going to get longer than 30 minutes run time with those two batteries or any two stage battery powered snowblower.. So you have to buy more batteries, more charger that could run you another $1,000 if you have big property.. with the current batteries it's good for only small property.. Gas is still King like the Toro 826 the best selling snowblower when it comes to clearing big property.. way more cheaper in the long run because of those batteries. You just keep pouring the gas in and keep going.. When you have big property who wants to run their snow globe for 30 minutes charge it for almost 2 hours keep going back and forth to finish the job.. Not fun not cool. Cheers!!

    How did you measure the internal resistance of the 0-10 dimmer circuit, with an ohmmeter, while the light was ON? Ohmmeter should be used on deenergized circuits only, if you want to measure a remotely correct resistance.

      It wouldn't make sense to test the resistance on the light fixture, as it is sending out a 10 V signal and then measuring the return voltage. But with the switch disconnected, you can use a multimeter to measure the ohms on the dimmer as you slide it between low and high. I'm not sure I did it correctly, but the theory is right. I failed in finding references online to what the range of resistances should be. The important thing is that when hooked up, it works pretty well. (I have another video in production where I wire up two lights in a ceiling with a dimmer switch.)

    Thanks for sharing real world usage of this blower.. decided to go with a Toro 26 gas 37802 series The battery blower just wouldn't cut it for me nor ur old style craftsman maybe if areas with less frequent snow fall my driveway is a sloped 70ft long by 19ft wide at the bottom narrows to 14ft wide midway and back to 17ft at the top plus a 40ft by 28ft parking pad up top.. 2 to 4 inch accumulation 6 days a week are my easy days i rip in high gear just to get it done and back in house out the cold.. i top up the fuel every 2 weeks with gas to spare which it only holds 2 Litres to begin with.. speed, power, run time that's what it comes down to with battery your trading one for the other gas at this point u get all

      Yes, for a driveway much larger than mine (which yours certainly sounds to be), you would need a second pair of batteries and the faster charger (which comes with the newer version with the 10 Ah batteries). Getting that second set of batteries to charge while you use the other gets very expensive.

      Good description, and puts things in perspective. Newer better cheaper battery tech is coming along, so many different types from many countries.

    Great video. Very informative. I have 2 of these LED panels and installing them both on one 0-10v dimmer. Searching for info on dimming a pair of panels.

      I've recorded another video where I do just that, but I haven't edited it yet. The important thing to know is that the wiring is simple: Connect the grey and purple wires from the far light to the near light, and then connect them to the dimmer. So grey to grey to grey and purple to purple to purple. Because the voltage and power levels are low, I've heard of people using all sorts of different wiring. I used speaker wire that I had left over from another project. They make a Romex Duo wire specifically for this, that combines the regular black/white/ground wires with the purple/grey wires in one cable, but it's expensive and hard to find, especially in shorter lengths for one-time projects.

      @@projectwithpreston thank you! I'm working on the project myself. I'm concerned about the spacing of the low voltage wire next to the high voltage wire. I've read you need to keep them isolated. Southwire makes a 14/2/2 but it's very expensive.

    I'm just going to go and say this was the dirtiest driveway ever tested. It's amazing the snow blower didn't die and blow the electric motor.
