Alfine 8 13.000 km dissasembly, inspection and oil
UPDATE 2022 - 15.000km:
Recently I have been able to make this hub occasionally skip in the first and second gear by standing on the pedals and pulling hard on my handlebars for maximum torque. While this is not a very common usage case, it does show the limit of what this hub can handle.
Contrary to what seems likely, it's not the gears skipping. The limit is caused by three tiny pawls that are located on the centre axle. (13:00 minute mark) Depending on the selected gear, one pawl will extend and hook into a ring around it. This way the hub changes gears. It's this pawl design that has it's limits when torque becomes very high.
The Alfine 8 speed is still excellent value for money, but I would not recommend to use this hub for climbing steep mountains or any other thing that forces maximum torque in gear 1 or 2.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been running my Alfine 8 speed (SG-S7001) on gearbox oil for the last 13.000km. It's been working great! In this video I show you how to disassemble the Alfine 8 speed yourself and how to add the oil.
And 'for science' I open up the internal gear system to see if any parts or gears have worn out during those 13.000km. I also compare the internals to an as good as new Nexus 8 speed (which has the same gearing system)
At the 10:50 minute mark I mention the internals are interchangeable. This means you can grab the Nexus 8 speed internals and put them into the Alfine 8 speed. I tried this and it works fine.
Lastly, thoroughly clean the the gearing system with brake cleaner so there's no white grease left. You don't want oil and grease to mix together. If you use one of those extension straws it's easier to clean the inside. Don't forget to let all the brake cleaner evaporate before you put everything together again.

Why would Shimano instruct to only use grease while using oil gives better results? (gearbox oil is never mentioned as an alternative in the 8-speed manuals) Are there any risks (apart from leaks when it is not good sealed). Nice tutorial!
Good advice. I've just bought a nearly new Alfine 8 SG-5001 disc lock type and laced it into a 700 rim. This is replacing my older, 11,000km+ Nexus 7, which is still in perfect working order. The 7 has had only had one oil service in that time, and only slightly oozes oil from the axles, a known issue. But the 8's gear ratios are far more user friendly than the 7, its very noticeable. I too run a chain tensioner. My gearing is 38t front 21t rear. Can you tell me your cog sizes? I will also note the issue of slippage under high torque and try to avoid it. My 7 never gave any issues with slippage. 👍💯✔🇬🇧😉
What about leaking oil problem ?
The missus is gonna love that oil on the carpet
That's not a carpet, it's a blue colored old sheet!
Why you didn't clean the whole hub outside and also rotor?
I like my hub dirty, just like my women!
Wow, great video, I´ve watched it through 😁 Fantastic workmanship, really showing how to do it in "easy" steps 👍
I would like to install a alfine 8 mecanism to replace my nexus 8 mechanism but keeping the same wheel Is it possible ? And will i have to change as well the cassette and the shifter? Thank you 😊
Nexus 8 internals are identical to Alfine 8. Like our Dirty Dutch friend said, they're interchangeable. The difference with Nexus and Alfine is, Nexus uses a roller or band brake, the Alfine a disc rotor. That's it brother. And use your Alfine 8 spd shifter too. It will work. 👍💯🇬🇧✔
Видео о том, как не нужно делать! Так делают только рукож0пы. Смыть густую смазку и капнуть 10 мл. масла. Это не тот alfine, чтобы заливать масло, эта втулка для густой смазки.
Or ATF, or grease, or Gearbox oil, or mix them all. Its as Shimano says Always Fine! 👍💯🇬🇧✔
Thanks a lot from Germany❤
Top Video thanks
Hi, thank you for a great video I'm wondering about the use of brake cleaner to remove the white grease as the 'Mannol' one I'm looking at buying online has a warning that it might damage some kinds of plastic... Any ideas?... Also wondering since you say that we don't want oil and grease mixing about the grease we need to put on the bearings to lubrication/prevention of water ingress and oil leakage - is it just the white grease that would be a problem? Thank you in advance.
Ervaring rijker.

It's the sealing by the axle casing you need to be careful with. 😮👍💯🇬🇧✔
Great video. To Those people with a CDX gates carbon drive. The sprocket needs a little help to come back on. There are three levers to lift the sprocket back upon the furthest ledge using a screwdriver before clamping back the springring. 👍
Can we use motorcycle engine oil?
Great video. I just needed it for maintenance. I aded fresh grease. Maybe some time i will try oil. Thanks
Try both. A little thickness of the grease thinned slightly by the added oil, that's all your doing. 👍💯🇬🇧✔😉
that video is awesome .....
BTW that C shaped "ring" you mentioned is called a C-clip.
what s the difference between SG-S7001-8 and SG-S7000-8 ?
Can you just use brake cleaner to clean the hub? Does it hurt the seals?
awesome video
what did you use to clean the gears? Regular breakcleaner?
I use diesel to degrease, then spray it liberally with carb or brake cleaner, let it dry out then re-oil/grease. 👍💯🇬🇧✔
Carb or brake cleaner is fine. 👍💯🇬🇧✔
In most other videos and instructions for this, I see people dip the unit into ATF, rather than inject it into the housing. Does anyone have any thoughts on which is better?
Yes, my friend has done this on his Alfine 8 and I did the same on my old Nexus 7. It works fine. 7,000+ miles (11,265+kms), no issues with changing gears, but, the Nexus 7 oozes a little oil, a know weak spot. That's why a 50/50 oil/grease mix works better. 👍💯🇬🇧✔
how does the oil not leak out? this thing is made for grease not oil
Shimano had an oil plug hole fitted to earlier Alfine 8/11 hubs. 👍💯🇬🇧✔
After watching this video, I did maintenance on my Alfine 8, with oil of course, and I will never get back to grease !!🙂
Why is the hub so filthy? I have bikes with more miles that look new...
13,000kms + is a lot of use. It will probably look as good as yours with a wash. I'm impressed with your milage. Di you commute or travel? 🤔👍💯🇬🇧✔
Back in the 60’s my friend had an English 3-speed with a Sturmey Archer hub. I remember him having a little tube of sewing machine oil, and every so often he was suppose to put 2-3 drops of oil in the hub.
Yes, those were the days. A little capped hole on the hub body. Did 1000's on two old S.A',s. Super reliable. 👍💯🇬🇧✔😉
man chain drives are so labour intensive on Maintainence like i have to degrease and oil my chain every 15 days or the cycle performs like shit
Yes, it's a filthy job. I was super surprised recently, to find my chain was stretched by 1.0%+ according to one of those chain checkers. A new Trex FX2 with. This was at about 1200 miles. I was not impressed. I'm now at 2003 miles, same chain/cogs, and no changes noted to my drive train. I will run it until the end and change the lot in one go. Those chain checkers are a 'worry' guague I.m.o! Our Dutch friend here does like it very filthy by the looks. 👍💯🇬🇧✔😉
please do not follow this guys example by NOT cleaning the wheel from months of grime. that bike is repulsive!
also with the nexus the have you dip the internal hub completely in their Shimano oil for 90 seconds or so and then let it drip... that way you get all the oil internally except you have only put the oil on the outside and so it takes much longer to work the oil inside. if anything you should add grease manually so its not dry.
@@TheOriginalStevenH It takes like 10 seconds of pedaling for the oil to distribute itself inside the hub. What did you think? Minutes? Hours?
Excellent video! I have 2 bikes with Nexus 8 (c6000 & c6001) hubs and one with a Nexus 4 Coaster. Are the seals on these hubs sufficient to go "oily only". Thanks again for your clear instructions.
Toi aussi tu vis avec ton vélo !?
The Shimano Nexus 7 and 8 and the Alfine 8 are not running on grease only. They also use oil. You can even buy special Shimano oil for it. But its insanely priced. 44€ for 1 liter!
No they do not. It's the Alfine 11 speed that runs on oil.
@@multireel7590 You are wrong. Nexus7, 8 and Alfine 8 is a combination of oil and grease. I had a 7 and opened it up also there is a special hub maintanance oil from Shimano that even say that its NOT for the Alfine 11.
@@Gieszkanne The Nexus 7/8 and Alfine 8 speed come by default from the factory with grease. Alfine 11 comes with oil. Check Sheldons Brown's website if you don't want to believe me: www.sheldonbrown.com/nexus-mech.html
@@multireel7590 I dont have to look at anybodys website for it. I had a bike with a nexus 7 that was new and I was the first owner and it had oil and grease in it. Also Shimano offer a special maintenance oil for their 7and 8 gear hub which is not for the Alfine 11.
I have got a gazelle C7 bloom bike from 2018. Its got a 7 speed shimano nexus 7 gear system. Its seems after looking some YT videos that a 3 speed or 8 speed have a better ratio in the gearbox. I have looked so far for parts to switch the system over to at least an 8 speed one.. Knowing i could find a shimano nexus 8 speed turn shifter (the original is a 7 speed nexus turn shifter) So i think that would be easy to swap if possible. Iam also think that a 11 speed gearhub wouldnt be possible on my bike. Iam really in a doubt to change out the 7 speed gearbox for a Nexus 8 speed or a alfine 8 speed gearhub. What is the benefit from a nexus 8 hub to a alpine 8 hub. It seems both are looking almost the same, and are also packed with grease to instead of oil. Can you give me you opinion what the best is to do? I really like to have a smoother paddeling action without to get tired to soon.
Good post. I've just bought a Alfine 8 to replace my Nexus 7, but built it into a wheel myself. It's ratios are just that much better than the 7. This was the Historic issue with the 7, it has a too high bottom gear and too low top, but the Alfine 8 is the opposite, with a lower bottom and higher top. It so much nicer now on my custom built Raleigh. 38t chainwheel x 21t rear cog. Its great. I tried a 16t that was fitted to it, but it proved too high overall. Good luck. 👍💯🇬🇧✔😉
you can tell that it was lubed with oil based on the amount of oil built up on the outside of the hub lol edit: 1:37 there has definitely been some leaking. has it affected your rear brake?
It's not leaking. It's from chain lube I sprayed that went a bit on the hub.
Zojuist zelf uitgevoerd met behulp van deze video, bedankt!
thank u bro. 👍🏻👍🏻 saved my day 😂
there was a school outside Chicago for bike techs called Vance Bloom. I was the regional tech and presented the argument for oil then to the instructor. it is agreed grease is better for the occasional rider. as a commuter and tech...it's a simple task for someone set up for the work. the Nexus 7 was before this and terrific with oil also. like butter. butta.
my argument for oil began in Chicago. I left my commuter outside one night and had no forward in the morning. it freewheeled forward. froze the pawls closed. I use refrigerator oil since.
Very helpful! Am I the only one that suspects the domed nuts on either end are made of chocolate? I keep stripping the threads on these! BTW when new, they put a pitiful amount of grease in these. It's well worth servicing after a few months.
Yes they are! Good thing is you can't really strip the axle itself because of it and the domed nuts are relatively cheap.
Yes. They strip easily I found too. 🙄
Great video quality. Also you might have saved my day - depending of wether I can put together the inner part that you left intact but I needed to disassamble due to rust ;-)
What did you use for the degreasing?
Van Gemert is een baas
On the original 3 speed gears you only has to add a few drops of oil now and then , thsts it , no strip down just ride . Why is it we always go backward, none of the new hubs have an oil cap ?
Yes, this right. Older Alfine hubs had the oil filler, maybe the Nexus too. My Nexus 7 didn't. 👍💯🇬🇧✔
Thank you. Great video. Clear and good quality. Thank you.
