How to Create a Notion-style Main Menu in Anytype
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 місяців тому
The simplest way to recreate a Main Navigation Menu in Anytype. Many users are accustomed to a folder structure, and therefore this video gives a 3-minute overview of creating a "folder structure" within the Anytype sidebar.
How to see graph view of both tags and relations cos I don't nest pages rather I use inline set thus all pages are showing unlinked graph view please help
Notion is a one-stop shop for all your notes, tasks, and projects! 4:08 -- true! And I hate it so much! It's damn clanky, clanky, clanky, clanky, clanky, clanky, clanky, clanky, clanky!
Fix your mic, dude. I think a horse is jumping on it or something! 🤯 Thanks for the tut buy the way!
It is very complicated to use. For example, I open two separate notebooks. Each one is about different topics. But when I create a note, it shows that note in all the notebooks.
What do you mean by “notebooks” - the Anytype team doesn’t use that terminology so I’m not clear on what you’re referring to
Thanks! Your video was a helpful explainer. I'm wondering though, what's the point of Sets if the relations that they help me sort aren't also reflected in the Graph view? I have now a set that groups all my notes with a specific tag, and I was hoping this would also reflect in the graph view, but they all remain separate from one another. Would it make more sense for me just o have them all linked on one page if that's all I'm after?
The team will be implementing “Tags as objects” soon (by end of Q3 2024 according to the roadmap), and so I believe that once that occurs - any time you tag an object, the tag itself and the object will be linked, and then all of those links (I would suspect) will show up on the graph view. There are lots of folks that have similar comments as you do regarding sets so there is also a chance that they incorporate your feedback into a future release.
@@AnytypeGuru oh I see, thanks for the follow up! Really looking forward to it then, when that functionality comes online. In the meantime I’ve just gathered them all onto a single page Notion-style, and that plays nicely with the graph as well.
I'm starting to think that all anytype video's are 'blessed' with audio from the nineties
Can we achieve this in anytype this is the feature which make me go to notion, but because of notions slowness I wanna switch ua-cam.com/video/gcH5i3RS8k0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Great time-saving shortcut, thanks!
One of the best presentations of the basics that I have seen. More please - maybe a 'Road Trip' use case for example!
I think it should be noted that Open-source is not the same as Code Available. While both mean the code is viewable Open-source allows you to modify and redistribute. Open-source would also allow for the community to contribute more towards Anytype and if something should happen to the folks behind Anytype the community could step in to support it or even create a fork(New Distribution). Code Available is far more restrictive on what you can do.
WTH you talking about? what a mess! you are a terrible teacher. mess all over the place also WTF your mic noise is so annoying.
These are great and useful, however I don't what you are typing, so I am not sure how you are getting around...
Thank you for video. Do you know if Anytime allows you to link databases with the self referal function? Thank's
Network thinking. Think about that. No, think much harder about it. A network comprises connections between things; in this case objects. How do you connect objects in Anytype? I don't know. I have been working with relational databases for close to sixty years; outlines even longer. I have mastered Logseq quickly. Why? It's first order of business was to instruct on how to create pages. Granted, "pages" is an awful term of art for the means by which pages and blocks are connected with each other, but I know how to create them. I am stumped how to link in Anytype although I have some ideas. Logseq does not have database capabilities. Anytype does. So does Tana. At least, they are not deaf, dumb, and blind to close to 100 years of database terminology. Like the "fields" in a database. Tana uses the word fields. Anytype uses the word "relations" You see an old timer like me sees the word "relation" and I start to think "relational database" So Anytype "types" are database tables and "relations" are database fields. Indeed, Antype relations has a field type called objects: you know like a foreign field that is used to relate or link together records from two different tables. But that is as far as the metaphor goes----before all hell broke loose.
How do you remove the Uncategorized Group/Tag? I have 3 of them and I have no clue why. I can only hide them and they only show up in Kanban and no where else.
That need for refresh bug happens a lot with many other parts of the app at the moment. In terms of task management what do you think the best way to do subtasks would be? If the answer is with backlinks then how can we show parent tasks that don't have another task as a backlink?
Great content, thank you. Is it possible to have a set of multiple objects? Or a set of multiple Relations? Also any idea how you can create a set of all backlinks + links of a certain object?
I like that they have put their code out in a way that they can't ripped off in the name of open source.
Can i install this on my Nas to use as my file explorer?
Use dark mode please in next video
I love this but a relation is a relation. And a property is a propery. A bread is not a potato. A single file has an extension. It has unique properties by itself. It does not have a relation with it. It does not relate to its creation date. A file or document can be dropped on a flash drive and it will still have those properties by itself wherever it is. Not that it matters, because i love your app, but i wish i could hide the word relation from the app. Relationship. To relate. Relatives. Relative. Bill did not have relations. To establish a relationship. 1+1=2. Not 1. Then again we are all atoms and all one. So maybe i am just old. 😂
I totally get what you're saying, property makes a lot more sense for an object's fields than "relation"
I'm actually a pretty power user over here, and I mainly was interested in your video not because I needed help learning what these were (I did expect that obviously ahaha), but instead because I was trying to hear why you used them. Or, more bluntly, I know what the differences are, and I almost always opt for sets (even if I have to query by "creation date" to get "everything," and then filter down on other criteria). I "get" what a collection is, but I just never see myself using them, even though I know there are instances where they are ideal. That's actually what I was trying to hear, and you kinda left it out ahahaha. You even mentioned there are specific instances where you like collections, but then omitted sharing it. So, if you don't mind, what are those specific situations where you really love collections that sets just don't seem to make sense?
I'm actually just a noob, playing with Anytype just a couple of hours ^^ (I look for a note app to replace Evernote so I more or less randomly watch some vids) So I'll probably say rubbish... It seems that we can use tags and sets instead of collections but this makes a difference - objects in a set or object sharing a same tag are not linked (by default), so they don't appear linked in the graph view neither. I expected the tag relation to be visible in the graph but I didn't find a setting for that, maybe I missed it. I'd probably use collections instead of set/tags when I'd have to mix objects type, it seems quicker and easier to check and maintain.
I use Anytype on my Android and Mac. It is great. Can you add how they sync plus what happens when they are both off the grid (no wifi, no signal)? Where are the notes?
There's a free 1GB free backup provided by AnyType
Collections prompt you to create a new object rather than move objects into it. I find this confusing. How can we add objects that already exist?
Currently, go to the object you want to add, click the three dot-menu in the top right corner, and then click "add link to object" and link the object to the Collection of your choice.
@@AnytypeGuru that WORKED! WOO! Thank you so much! The only thing is, that’s such a roundabout way of doing things :/ I wish objects could autopopulate in a collection after a relation or object has been selected in the collection. And if not that, then at least be able to batch-edit. I hope Anytype gets on that. But that aside, cheers to finally setting up my first collection 🤣🥂
@@ohwell7143 that would be a set ? "I wish objects could autopopulate in a collection after a relation or object has been selected in the collection"
Great advice. Please add a warning: Do not watch this video using a headphone, unless you want hearing damage.
A white noise there.
Omg. Thank you for this warning. I turned my video to half volume and it still startled me LOL.
Notion has been always a good tool for me to track, note and literally to help me remember everything but it is so slow sometimes. I cannot wait for the Anytype teams released the formula and roll-up features! They are going to be helping me a lot to track things and definitely easier to consider to switch.
Any comparison to Tana?
Tana will go public when you and me will be enjoying our retirement. (I’m 45)

It's great that people begins to cover about this very promising product (I also like what @FocusedCuriosity does). The subject that you may cover is how to create tables that may be sorted and filtered with sets and collections, also cover why, what they call "Relation", is more a property or a field... AND, if I'm right, I think that's even possible to have relations between two "tables" with specific "field" ("relation")... Could be great to have confirmation about this... AND.. for French native speakers, a slightly slower speech would be welcome 😉👍🏻
Thanks @fsagaer! Yes you are correct that you can connect 2 "tables" of data with a "relation.
@@FocusedCuriosity Thank you for your confirmation !
Nice video. AnyType shouldn't be labeled as having a database feature just because the code is "database." Users expect a database functionality similar to Coda/Notion. This feature empowers users with advanced workflows and options. Providing non-coders with relational databases is like a superpower. Comparisons should consider this aspect more fairly. Excited to see where AnyType goes - looking really solid so early.
... it's less apparent but it's possible to create databases with Sets and Collections 😊👍🏻 Indeed, as each objects has properties (called "relations") that may be added as you want (it ends as being fields) and shown in lists or grids -> all the objects ends in tables (or views) and may be sorted, filtered as you want. It's genius. I've even been able to make relations between two "tables"... Here's my example : I want to buy a house. Therefore, I'm creating a database of houses I want to visit with an other linked table with the "Real estate agent" in charge of the sale. For this, I did create an object type called "Real estate agent" and did add one "relation" (or property or field) called "Contact" for this object type. I also did create an other object type called houses. For those objects, I also added one "relation" (or property or field) called "Contact" BUT Anytype did suggest me the relation (or property or field) called "Linked contact"... I did create some objet "Real estate agent" with their first name, last name, phone number, email, ... Now, when I'm creating the objects "Houses" that I want to visit, in the filed "Linked contact", I may select one of my "Real estate agent". I end then with a "one to many" database relation type 👍🏻😀. It may be more direct, but we have to keep in mind that Anytype is still in beta (0.38)... And for a early beta, I feel this product very promising... 🤩
i just discovered this new app. It's like Notion and obsidian made a baby🥰
... with Evernote and Capacities as grand parents, and Roam Research and Logsec as cousins 😉

Great overview, the chart is really helpful! Would like to see if you have imported from Notion into Anytype and how that went.
It would be very useful to be able to read in to the daily plan any outstanding tasks from previous days. if this is already possible a video showing how to would be great.
Would be amazing if you recored a tutorial on how to setup a Self-hosting network with AWS
Can i create a set with more specific queries For example I want a set that contains both the space type and the area type Or i want a set with a specific tag value .?

Por favor, me dio mucho estrés cuando rozaba y se escuchaba muy fuerte
It gave me a mini scare 😂😂
can you make a video on how to use self hosted network on anytype
Would be great to have self hosting on Anytype Android. Also would like to have the option to choose storage location in the same, like obsidian and logseq.
Please make a video on simple PARA system using Anytype.
will do! I use PARA myself, but have customized it a bit because I think there are some improvements that can be made to ensure it fits Anytype really well. I'll make that video after I finish the Notion vs. Anytype video that's up next.
Not being able to choose where it's stored on my device is annoying so that would be nice. Also I'm still a little confused about the one gig limit because I haven't uploaded any pictures or videos but it still shows my storage getting fuller. Assumed it was just the vault in general. I'm very interested in any type. I'm addicted to notion but also use obsidian.. Notion security is obviously the flaw. also speed. I'm messing around with any type now but haven't really jumped on to use it seriously. But just a little push away. Thanks for the video it's good to see content about any type.
being able to choose where it's stored on my device: I believe this is on the roadmap. // and awesome to hear that your tinkering with Anytype -- I want to make a Notion vs. Anytype video next in fact so would love your thoughts.
so if i have under 1gb of files, it should all sync to any device i'm logged onto? also does it still work if one of the devices is offline and not on the same network?
Yes, exactly. and yes, it will still work even if one device is offline -- that is exactly why Anytype hosts a backup node themselves to ensure people don't lose access to their data.
@@AnytypeGuru I use a Google drive folder as my obsidian vault so that I can access my data in any device I want. Can I do that in any type?
