Приєднався 14 лис 2018
Sjorvaldar Vikings are a California based 501.(c)3 non-profit organization that’s primary focus is dedicated to enriching the educational experience through immersive living history. Sjorvaldar was founded with a shared interest and passion for the history, crafts, battle elements of all things Scandinavian, with the intention and commitment to share it with the public with as much authenticity as possible.
Members aim to depict a mobile, seasonal camp/temporary village complete with living quarters, work spaces, and recreational areas. The village not only showcases the lifestyle and culture of the period, but also the harsher and battle ready aspects of life in what was was know as the Viking age, specifically the 10th century.

Natural Dyeing With Weld
Weld is one of the more well known historical dyes of the Viking age. It produces a bright almost neon yellow in the right conditions but can be shifted to green with things like iron or over-dyed with other dyes to create secondary colors.
Today we share excerpts from the dye day that our members Katla and Tyra had while playing with fresh weld and later shifting that color with iron. Although this video shows the use of modern tools and ingredients, make no mistake, the process of doing this over an open fire in the Viking age would not be too far removed from what we do today(with the exception of adding tums😉). We hope you enjoy the video and learn a thing or two as well.

Farming in the Viking Age
Переглядів 3,6 тис.4 роки тому
In today’s video, Siggeir just barely skims the surface of the foods and agriculture that the Viking Age Scandinavians had to either cultivate or forage for so long ago. Food and a need for more land to provide for their families is what motivated and drove the expeditions that gave name to the “Vikings”. Because let’s face it, we all get a bit berserk when we are hungry. #food #foraging #vikin...

Amazing video. Well done sister.
Allow me to share how the runes are actually pronounced, some of them are wierd: How to write - how to pronounce Fehu - fèchu Uruz - uruz Thurisaz - Thurisaz Ansuz - ånsuz Raitho - raitho Kenaz - kénaz Gebo - chébo Wunjo - wunjo Hagalaz - chagalaz Nauthiz - nauthiz Isa - isa Jera - yayra Eihwaz - èchwaz Perthro - pèrthro Sowilo - sowilo Ahlgyz - elchaz Tiwaz - tiwaz Berkano - berkano Ehwaz - echwaz Mannaz - mannaz Laguz - laguz Inguz - inguz Dagaz - dagaz Othila - òthila Put å into norse google translate, and è à ò into dutch google translate, to hear how you pronounce it.
This was fantastic, thank you!!
Amazing good
I just found this channel and love it!
This seems to be a Viking style bowl/plate lathe. Turning centers should be at elbow height for spindle turning. Bowl hooks are not for spindle turning, nor is round (branch) wood, unless you intend to split the turning in two. At least you actually have a spring pole.
You can still find food storage buildings known as stabu in many rural places in Norway
Great video, shame I found it so late. Channel hasn’t gotten another video in several years
lovely video I have only ever used Elder Futhark but am now looking into Younger Futhark thank you for sharing your knowledge blessings Halsa Valang
My pleasure!
A nice demonstration.
Glad you liked it!
I understand that most people didn't actually write with the Elder futhark but I also have a last name that starts with the letter G which the younger futhark does not have
:)
Bro I was ready to see you hit that coin the way you lined it up. Not tap it 😂
Thank you for a special look into the past....very interesting and informative!
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the video! Thank you!!! I’m just starting to learn the Runes so yes! Loved it!
So glad!
Fascinating! I haven’t tried the tums and soda ash, but found that if I used very dilute ammonia as an after-bath, my wool would turn fluorescent yellow. I’m actually knitting with some of my weld-dyed yarn on a reproduction of a 1950s cardigan. Not particularly Viking….
“Tyr is missing one of its arms.” Lol
;)
Younger Futhark is quite a bit more complicated than Elder Futhark, but both are fascinating! Thank you for the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating, and good pronunciation in the beginning there, do you have any Scandinavian heritage?
Many if not most of our members do!
Can you help me i need to make 4 bands in younger futhark runes. Can you tell me words for War, warrior, life, love, peace, eternity, chaos, and destruction. It would mean so much to me and help me out so much I'm not educated on thr younger futhark and i only have 4 days to make these 4 bands
I've found that unrolled cotton balls make good test subjects that you can make a small amount of a dye to test it out. Also one way to tell if there's a lot of iron in your tap water is if you regularly get a pink slimy film on your bathtub and sink that you have to scrub off. That pink film is a bacteria that consumes iron. So if you get it in your apartment building you know that there's at least a little iron in your water. I also recently experimented with heating my water in a kettle that looked like it was made of bronze, but could also be copper. Using this water to brew purple cabbage yarn made a lighter color with an unearthly glow to it. Not a literal glow, I mean the shade it developed. It was incredible. Also don't forget that besides urine you can get alkali from potash. Put your ashes out in a pot or jar before it rains, and then let the rainwater fill the jar and seep in. Oak produced high quality potash.
I am from in a program for Scandinavian Studies and I see these every now and again to see how people pronounce-butcher these. Most are WRONG. YOU are one of the few who pronounce these mostly correctly! ❤ (*Raidho is pronounced rye-tho) Really awesome video though and thanks for pronouncing the rest correctly!!!❤
Thank you :)
I am so trying to get purple and fushia! I have not used natural things to dye fiber, except paper, it's going to be fun experimenting, I have 2 different lichen on trees in my yard so already collected some off the ground! Thank you
glad you enjoyed the video!
I had to sub and show some Norse love glad to find a fellow brother of the Norse
:)
jep ... that was a very very "little series of woodworking" ... 🤷♂

Where did you get that ricer?
Hi, love the lathe and what you are doing 🙂. Can you tell me where I can get drawings or instructions on how to make a Viking lathe please. Grant 🇦🇺
Short twig is much easier to carve
🤷🏻♂️️
"Tyr is missing one of its arms." I see what you did there.
;)
I was curious about what Vikings ate besides meat and beer.
our enemies ;D
How long would you leave the bread on the fire for?
What is the approximate weight of one of the insulators?
Excellent vid
thank you!
Cool
:)
my guy thank you so much for this you seriously you saved my arse with an assignment that was due at midnight don’t worry I credited you in my bibliography
:)
Great work on the history and I like the fact you used real cordage. Great looking lathe.
thank you!
Thank you, really interesting video! Especially liked the photos of the Viking pieces and will check out the link. Thanks again and take care :)
glad you enjoyed it!
I can get most of the changes that were done when they simplified the runic alphabet and created the younger futhark. However, I still don't understand why the younger futhark didn't keep the Dagaz, Pertho, Gebo and the Ehwaz runes for /d/, /p/, /g/ and /e/. It's kind of making things more complicated. I've also heard that the rune yr made an /y/ vowel sound too. Is that true?
Yea, I was thinking, where are the Runes for the D and G etc, it is incomplete - the first Runic system is way better!
Interesting video! Thanks!
glad you enjoyed it!
