"A congenital loser trapped in a dead-end profession from which he can derive no personal satisfaction, yet possessed of enough self-awareness to recognize the absurdity of his situation."
The Last of the Malört
The last dram from a bottle of Jeppson's Malort I bought earlier this year. Found it at Fourth + Court Hy-Vee in Des Moines for $21.99.

What makes an Airline an Airline ? Is it just a name or does it mean something?
"An air-line railroad was a railroad that was relatively straight, following a shorter (and thus, presumably quicker) route instead of a longer, winding route. In their heyday, which was prior to aviation, they were often referred to simply as 'air lines'."
Should have been a MegaMegaMega...Hit!

The best train ride in the USA is Denver to Oakland crossing the Rockies and Sierras. I used to do it in the days of the Rio Grand Zephyr. I love Budd domes.
Watching an old movie, "Santa Fe", which takes place in the late 1800s. They're tunneling through the Raton Pass.
I've been through here on Amtrak. It's an amazing trip.

Reason you dont see any railfan videos of Gore Canyon is well, its extremely difficult to access unless you either take the train through it or get a raft on the river and only experienced rafters should do it as those rapids are pretty dangerous or so I read
how fast can this train go? It looks like they spent a lot of time on the rails to keep them nice and level...
79 mph is the fastest speed I know, but that's only achieved on relatively straight track, like the overnight portions through Nebraska or from Provo to Salt Lake City.
@@slakingfool wow!! i got a reply on youtube that wasn't hateful!! thanks for the info!!

I was wondering too!
As a big fan of steam trains, can't wait to get out to see the scale of some of yours in the States! Lovely to watch.
You definitely want to do some research in advance on active steam across the States. I was lucky this year to have two locomotives come to me. The Isle of Man trains you rode on looked like great fun.
Very nice video, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for access to the lyrics!

I've driven I-70 thru here a number of times on my way to Moab and back. This has to be one of the best stretches in the U.S. that you can see from the interstate. Thank you for sharing such great scenery.

It will likely be dark by the time you get to Raton.

Plutonio (Pu).

May I assume that double stack and intermodal trains are not allowed on this line. I did not notice any cutouts in the upper edges of any tunnels.
That's a logical assumption. Union Pacific runs its double stack trains on the Overland Route through Wyoming.
No. The Moffat Tunnel only allows for singles.
Great video. I am a big IAIS rail fan. Thanks
What kind of whistle is that on her? I don't recall hearing that one from the other two worn after the excursions she did last month But besides that it still sounds great on her/6988
I don't know what kind of whistle that is, but the locomotive was blowing another whistle and horn a few minutes before this video.
It is a Grand Trunk 6-chime. The other whistles used on this trip are the original Chinese whistle and air horn, as well as a Guatemalan one. Truly a multi-cultural whistle event on a single locomotive.
Nice!
Nice! Plenty of action
A longer, better quality trip here... ua-cam.com/video/OaagZHzkWHQ/v-deo.html
I love this part of the trip. I have done it 3 times and can't wait for 4.
The only plutonium that 'glows' is Plutonium 238. Nearly pure Pu238 glows a dull red through heat. It has a half life of 87 years, so its hardly glowing for 1/4 of million years and its only 2% of the plutonium in spent fuel . Uranium fluoresces green when exposed to UV light I guess that's where the idea of glowing radioactivity comes from. The stuff that makes your watch dial glow is the phosphor the same as the coating on old CRT TV sets, its activated by beta particles (electrons) emitted from Tritium. I guess you could make a watch dial with Pu238 as its a beta emitter too, but Pu238 is much more valuable to NASA to power deep space probes. The majority of spent fuel plutonium is Pu239 (53%) which you could make bombs out of if you could separate away all the other isotopes of plutonium that make it suicidal to make bombs out of spent fuel plutonium. Pu238 has half life of 24,000 years so 10 half lives gets close to the 1/4 million years. But it doesn't glow and because of the long half life its barely radioactive. By 240,000 years its radioactivity had decreased to a thousandth. Pu240 half life is 6500 years, Pu241 half life is 14 years and is about 13% of spent fuel plutonium. So I'd be careful around that stuff, but after 280 years its decayed to a millionth of its original intensity.
I rode the Zephyr a few weeks after this. This section was definitely one of the highlights of the trip!
Rode a bicycle in part of this spectuler canyon on a paved nonmoterized trail.what a beautiful and enjoyable experience!
