Whiff Punishing [Fighting Games]
A short video on Whiff Punishing.
Took a slightly different approach this time, no subtitles. Instead there's a transcription below.
Again, tried to make it as simple as possible while being short. I most likely left out key points, but these are what I felt were most important. Any criticism is greatly appreciated.
Transcription:
A whiffed move is any attack that doesn't connect.
A whiff punish is simply punishing a whiffed move.
When an opponent whiffs a move, there is a moment where they cannot block.
It's at this moment they can be punished for whiffing their attack.
Let's take a look at Rose's slide attack.
Visualize the range of her slide.
Stand just outside of its range.
Pay close attention to the space in front of Rose.
The moment anything enters that space, execute your own attack.
In summary: Anticipate their offense, stand just out of range, and react with your own attack to successfully whiff punish.
Here are a few pointers on whiff punishing:
Fast attacks with good reach are ideal for whiff punishing.
Dance in and out of the opponents attack range to bait out a whiffed move.
Despite focusing on the ground battle, don't forget to watch out for jump ins.
Be aware of fakes and your opponent punishing your attempts at a whiff punish.
Whiff punishing is an important tool in footsies.
It relies heavily on your anticipation and reaction.
However, it's a tool best learnt through practice and experience.

Also be sure to let me know if you liked this sort of thing, want more like this, and if there are any other topics you'd like me to cover (i.e. blocking, plinking, etc.), not necessarily in this format. I'll try to emphasize the videos to be short, basic, and cover things not usually talked about, but somehow expected to know.
And for any questions, feel free to ask them in the comment section, I'll try to answer asap.
Again, thanks for taking the time to watch my video, I appreciate it.

you deserve more credit dude well done
Still useful to this day
Quick question: you say that you should start slow and then speed up to normal speed. Problem is, whenever I try to do this fast enough, the drumming comes out with both presses being done simultaneously. How do I get the separation between press one and press two large enough to count but small enough to be input in a frame or two?
Very insightful
Come back to UA-cam please
THANK YOU!
Great vid, makes me want to buy snake oil
"Pretend you tapping the desk.." . Believed it or not, I almost never did that in four decades plus of my life.
It's not mashing it's pianoing
Delete your chanel.

thanks man!... this is very useful in Street fighter 5 This was both entertaining and informative. Thank you kind sir. awsome editing video, but 3 33 mins? no way... 30 seccs most !
What's that pad you double tapped on?
You are god like for this video
This vid is so good wtf
this video is GOLD and I just found it! better late then never lol
Is there a good way to double tap with the stick? I play a game where one character has every move as a double direction tap, and on an arcade stick - it just feels way too sluggish and slow for it to be effective
dsp should take notes.
i'm a little late but i double tapped that like button.
Dude u r fucken awesome.... Thank you sooooo much.
Nice video, guilty gear time
i wanted to find a gem to teach me how to double tap for new fighting games thanks
Can I double tap going from my index to my middle finger instead of the other way around? no matter how much I try my brain is simply not wired to go backwards like that.
Nice tutorial, but so hard to use on punch button, any ideas?
Great video, the only downside is that doubletap became a tic disorder to me
congratulation for the video. thanks a Million,
Suggestion. Make videos again.
Best tutorial vid ever. I double tapped the like button. Thanks sir.
Bob Dobbs.... Wait a second
Well... Wait a minute... Something's wrong..

Virtuoso1 your fingers play without you. Impressive.
awsome editing video, but 3 33 mins? no way... 30 seccs most !

I'm confused, how is double tapping going to help my execution?
it gives you a second opportunity for your input to register in case your first one was too early
ded channel?
shots fired at the end ! lol.
Nice presentation. :)
This was both entertaining and informative. Thank you kind sir.

This actually helped a lot thanks
How come when you said "frontman of Nickelback" you showed a picture of the guy from Con-Air?
Anyone know of a character that would be good to practice with that uses a kick special? I've been practicing with Akuma/E Ryu's Short Tatsu into all 3 variations of punches for the Shoryuken, but want to know what would be a good character(s) to do something like that where I can use their 3 different kicks, even if I have to use more than one character to cover all 3. I can double tap fine when I'm just sitting there doing it with absolutely no pressure, but once it comes to quicker button presses, such as the example I posted above with Akuma/E Ryu, I have an issue of missing the input, and I just like a visual representation that I hit the combo. Just want to be ready for SFV, but my 3 kick's is where my double tapping is the weakest. If anyone has any suggestion(s) please let me know! Would be much appreciated
Great tutorial!
what exactly does turbo do?
+Jason Lovi by holding a button it mashes it
A lot of ppl like arcade sticks for shooters and side scrollers, turbo works good, ever play final fight with a turbo button?
well, it's useless to me then.
no...if I don't know what it does I'd have no reason to use it.
