Looking back to thank God; looking forward to trust God!

The question of how a person ought to deal with sin is meant to be addressed to the whole of our lives, and we first will begin considering this in a negative sense, starting with the two most common ways people fail in putting to death the practices of the body.

The peace of Christmas seldom seems to live up to our expectations. Is this a promise of God’s word that falls short?

For the believer in Christ Jesus, we have already been sanctified, Paul and others make this clear for us. However, there is likewise the "not yet" reality of ongoing sanctification. There seems to be a tension between these two, and yet these ideas work in concert together rather than in conflict with each other.

We are now to the last verse of Ephesians 1:3-14. Last month we saw how we are sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit in verse 13. Now iIn verse 14, we are told that He has been given to us as a “pledge", the “earnest" of the Holy Spirit. While the “sealing” of the Holy Spirit shows ownership of God through our redemption, the “pledge” guarantees that what God says He will do for us, He will do it.

The manner of a person’s life gives proof of whether they are in the flesh or in Christ Jesus. If their life continues over time to reflect a life lived according to the flesh, they are still in their sin, they are still condemned, they are still under the penalty of eternal death.

Prayers of gratitude guard our hearts against the enemy’s attacks of temptation and deceit.

Our obligation is not to the flesh, to follow its dictates and desires, we’ve been set free from that enslavement through our union with Christ Jesus! We have been enabled, and empowered, and now commanded by God to live our lives in a manner consistent with who we now are.

The unity found in love is more than encouraging, it strengthens hearts against false teachings and the divisions that arise from false teachings.

Paul had a goal for the believers in Colossae. The love of the body of Christ - His church - is a necessary motivation for anyone who serves God.

One of the things we have seen in Ephesians 1:3-12, all these spiritual blessings are only found in Christ through a personal faith in Jesus Christ. As we now turn to verse 13, we will see how we can have the sealing and the significance of the Holy Spirit.

As you read the first 11 verses of Romans 8, you will notice that Paul's first two arguments have been based entirely on something which God has done, and the resulting realities based upon such being the case. Now in verses 12 and 13, he turns to showing us how we must practically apply these things to our own selves.

Paul provides the particulars of his ministry of presenting the word of God: to proclaim, to persuade, and to present with purpose and power.

On account of Paul's teaching in Romans 8:5-10, it may be very easy for a person to consider the flesh and our bodies as being inherently evil, and consider the soul or spirit of a person to be where we ought to spend the entirety of our energy. So, he sees it necessary to educate us regarding our bodies, to put the body into a proper perspective, which is exactly what he is doing in verse 11.
