The banishment of beauty by Scott Burdick

Here is a video that my husband Scott Burdick produced. He showed this as a presentation at an art conference years ago. I haven't posted it on my channel yet, so I thought I would. It's about the bias of the modern art establishment against traditional portrayals of beauty in art. There are a few places with not sound because even though we bought music they brought a clain against it. I hope ...

Painting a Portrait in Oil - Demo by Scott Burdick
I loved that place…Chinchero, Peru. Beautiful painting, Scott. I was there a couple years ago with Kevin and Lori and their group. I wanted to get the chance to go back and paint, so I hired our guide’s dad who was a taxi driver and he took me back to Chinchero for the last free day and I painted and chatted with him all day. Thanks for the memories. You guys are awesome.
@@JeffEickhoff thank you Jeff, we want to go back again also!!!
I have that one
Hi Sue, hi Scott… my husband was a Handyman in our family.❤ He did physics for a living, but on the side, he installed all sorts of things in our home. I miss him terribly. He died six years ago and now I have to use a handyman. I just found out that Handyman had a heart attack at 55…😮
Only 480p ?
@@nanli8136 I didn’t realize that. Unfortunately the lighting in the museum was very low and the images didn’t come out sharp. I hope you get the chance to visit in person.
I think it's tantamount to abuse to put this video out with such a very young girl talking about what is, in effect, her intimate life. It's fine girls talking with other girls about all this stuff - that's what girls do, but to put it on the internet for thousands of people to hear and to actually be able to see her, is wrong. I think you should remove it because it will backfire on her. In terms of the actual painting the eyes are too wide open and not far enough apart. The nose is too narrow, especially across the nostrils and is a bit too long, plus the mouth is too plump and not wide enough.
She wanted to share her story, I don't know why you jumped to the conclusion that we shared this without her permission. You make me laugh with your critiques, ha ha ha. I know it is coming from a place of unhappiness.
Hi Susan! I’m loving the way the studio is coming out! So exciting to see the process 🤗
@@AnaCornejoArt thank you Ana 😻 I want to keep it clean for as long as possible, but I know I can’t do that for long. I have tooooo much stuff!! Ugh
Id consider getting a cpl lens filter for your camera/phone btw, it works wonders at negating glare!
@@xeladoesart5200 oh, I hadn’t heard of that before. Thanks
Used to rent the Coach House as an apartment also the basement as an apartment

My all-time favorite American contemporary painter, George Carlson… may he live a long and healthy life.💕💕💙🥳🌞
thanks for the idea for the lights, I have a drop in ceiling that needs the florescents replaced. Great that some have the Kelvin adjustment on them. I'll be hiring an electrician- I don't mind painting, trimwork or fixing sheet rock seams, but electricity is beyond me. I like the new color in the studio, the David Leffel green is a little depressing (to me, anyway).
Yes, the dark green was a phase.
You're real cutie.. Scott's okay.. you're just guys are just trying to where too many hats
Chicken coop perch; looks like chickens aren’t going to have much head-room as they grow. It’s tight quarters on that perch.
@@donnaconrad6212 he keeps adding perches and in the next video he opens the ramp and they can go down to the ground level.
Let the man work. Trying to micromanage is not helpful when someone is building. Wow.
I always try to make something look better then what I'm doing it from right from the start
Susan and Scott, I must tell you that seeing your videos are such a pleasure to me. I feel that I want to give you a zillion hearts and thumbs up for all that you share with us. You guys are so sincere in your work, as a team and as husband and wife. Thank you for sharing your precious life with us. ❤❤❤ Penelope
@@pennynicholls your comments have made my day!!! Thank you.
Seems like they're having some kind of arts every time a city you going to it's just that nobody really knows about it sometimes
What a charming town !
Might be better to paint from your drawings an actual subjects is computers is a terrible crutch
As expecting you guys use some kind of spotlighting model looks a little too comfortable sitting there straight
Thanks😊
Now you have sky light with no real skylights. They really do the trick, it's great !
@@PauloRicardo-hn8pn yes, they really mimic sky lights. I am very happy. You can tell they are so much better than my other studio.
Hi, Very useful information as I am currently building a studio and have had options on the lighting. So the Kelvin is 5000 - what about the RA? Thanks from Norway
@@svenfigenschou7345 I don’t know exactly what the RA is. I gave you the product on Amazon and it might say that information on the product page.
@@susanlyonfineart Thanks for the answer , no information on RA or CRI as it also is referred to on the mentioned pic.. RA/CRI indicates the span or width of colours from the white colour (sun) - like the sun is 100 RA - artificial light is seldom higher than 90 RA/CRI - so my question is to what extent does the lighting you are using resemble natural sunlight :)
They don't run around outside
@@jimjotka2187 they are in the smaller house while there are still young. They are only a few months old. They move to more space each month. When they are 6 months old they will be let into the big yard and barn with the older chickens
Happy you are safely home.
@@marlene6489 thanks, happy to be home
The tan bird is going to be problems! She likes to prance around in her Manolo's with spats covers. 😉 The studio refit is looking great. I have a question about lighting. I am new to painting; I have heard others recommend lights that can adjust kelvin, lumens, and CRI. Is this something you will handle in a local way? Sometimes, it all seems so confusing.
@@rodneycook2457 I am going to leave my ceiling lights at 5000 Kelvin’s. LED lights on stands are good for chaining temperature if you want different times on portraits
❤Your studio is looking amazing. You must be excited.😊

I love New York City, but the noise would drive me crazy. I used to live in uptown in Chicago for many years before I married and had children now we’re out here in western Nevada at the foothills of the Sierras and it’s a perfect spot for me. ..like to paint in the quiet of the mountains..❤❤
@@pleinaire8698 I love both. Cities and country. My main issue was the smell of pot everywhere.
I liked Scott’s big word salacious.. I don’t get up in the morning in a salacious mood though!! My favorite word is obfuscate, which is what Trump does!💙
@@pleinaire8698 you and Scott would get along very well 😊
I love your walking videos susan ..they’re very interesting.. And yes, I paint outdoors every week and have the same problem with bringing it inside. The painting looks so much darker than outdoors. So what I do, I try to paint in the shade, which isn’t always possible or at least have shade on my palette and canvas..❤ Does Scott ever used an umbrella outdoors?
@@pleinaire8698 he does use an umbrella sometimes. He actually brought an umbrella with him on the trip, but just never took it out with him. I think it was mainly he didn’t want to carry it.
@@susanlyonfineart yes carrying all that gear gets to be too much for me. I’m 74 now and have been doing this for 20 years trying to lighten my load as I go.💙🌻👍
Wonderful travels, I always enjoy putting your videos on while I'm painting. I like hearing all the outdoor sounds, and people chatting. I end up watching each video at least 2 times. While I'm painting I just like to listen, and later I re-watch it to see all the fun stuff. I love Scott's little travel easel and palette. Did he build it?
@@j.peckart thank you so much for watching the videos. Scott’s easel is called a coulter easel. You can get them at Art Box and Panel. They have different sized palette boxes.
Today you had wind in the valleys of the buildings that scrape the skies, and I had wind that blew in the red dust from the Arches in the Canyonlands. Susan, when you checked the tag on the napkin blouse, I was hoping you would have checked the tag on the woven Indian rugs over your shoulder. I hope you agree it was a great day to be alive, sore feet and all. I imagine when you get home James Gurney will be down sketching your chickens. Were those rigger brushes that Scott got from Rosemary or something else? Shake the dust off your feet and get to work. 😀
@@rodneycook2457 I love how you phrase things. Scott does love riggers and he has been using evergreen angle brushes. It’s great that rosemary is always coming out with new shapes. We just got home yesterday and have to go see our chickens today. I won’t recognize them
❤Thanks for taking us along. It was fun.😊

@@jimjotka2187 I am so glad, thank you for watching
Thank you so much for your Artist Diaries - I just discovered this amazing series. Since I will likely never have an opportunity to visit these art museums, your tours and informative talks are definitely the next best thing (actually perhaps even better for me) to being there in person since I would likely be exhausted from the travel! Love the way you describe all the artistic elements in the pieces - this is a real art education.
@@MarieGD1947 thank you Marie, that makes me very happy
You got to keep the protein up that's why you'll be so drained
@@jimjotka2187 You are probably right, too much coffee and bread
Keep painting the more you do the better you get
@@jimjotka2187 thanks, I agree. It takes me awhile to get going with outdoor painting. I have to be in one place long enough to know places that inspire me.

During the musical intreludes at the end I admit I teared up a little. Sorolla has had such a huge impact om my artistic and life journey over the last year. Pretty much all the paintings in the central hall were different last time I visited. So they definitely rotate. It's funny, when I visited last year, I ate at that same chipotle. lol!
Good art school practice
