I am a mathematician working in aerospace. I specialize in applications of logic in computer science. It's some heavy stuff, so I use games to take a break. Games were part of my family life growing up and I am lucky enough to have a wife and children that enjoy them as well. I started this channel as a video journal for the games we play. I sometimes post additional commentary to the linked blog. Welcome to my gaming scrapbook!
Enderal: Forgotten Stories [stream 2]
This Skyrim total conversion has kind of burrowed itself into my brain. I sat down to play it by myself today because I really wanted to see what was next. I hadn't played 10 minutes when my wife decided she wanted to give it another shot as well. Three hours later, I had to make myself take a break. There's some clunkiness (although some of that comes from the Skyrim engine itself) but it's nothing I can't look past. I was hesitant to believe the high praise I was hearing about this game, but so far it's living up to the hype.

Enderal: Forgotten Stories -- a Skyrim conversion [stream]

We saw this total conversion mod and thought it might be interesting. My wife played the intro the other night but I had some technical issues with Steam. Tonight we were able to play together and we made it past the prelude and into the first act. This is the gameplay I streamed on Twitch, pauses, internet hiccups, and all. It's starts kind of choppy because internet just really sucks where we...

Morrowind was one of my favorite games on the original Xbox and my brother played it on PC. I used to have a screen shot he sent me where he had modded in a huge fire spell and cast it in Balmora, causing all of the NPCs to flee the explosion. Oblivion (and CoD 2!) was one of the first games I played on the Xbox 360 when my friend brought his launch console over to my place for a day of games a...

I actually intended to post a different video today, but when I checked the recording it was extremely choppy. So much for that. I hopped back into Armored Core again since it was still in my Xbox 360 from testing. These missions are super short. I kind of like that. I hope they don't throw really long missions at you later in the game. I wasn't sure what the defense mission was going to consis...
Mechwarrior 5: Clans ~ stream from local Xbox to Steam Deck

It's been a while since I tested local streaming from mu Xbox to my Steam Deck. So while my wife was playing Dragon's Dogma 2 on the living room TV I figured I'd give it a try. I'd bought a few new Xbox games on sale this weekend, but I decided to push through another mission for Clans. I really want to see the story through, so I've just said to hell with it, started a new save file named "fuk...

Since this came in on a Saturday morning, I was sitting in the living room with my wife. Rather than go to one of my consoles set up for capture, I decided to just stream my first test on Twitch. One of the most annoying things about this move has been that the internet options here suck compared to what we had out in the middle of the woods. That being the case, I was surprised the stream was ...

Today was almost the first day in a long time I wasn't going to have a video to post. Things are just kind of scattered at the new place. I can't easily get to my computer desk (where my Series S also sits), I don't have an easy way to capture from the devices in the living room, and when I tried to capture another mission from my XCOM: Chimera Squad Ironman campaign on the Deck, the video got ...

Everyone seems to be playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, but I'm hesitant to start until it has a few updates behind it. Still feeling burnt from the Clans launch (I'll quit beating that horse eventually, I promise). In the meantime I got the first PGR game in and gave it a go. There is definitely a jump up in quality/modernization between this one and the sequel, but this definitely doesn't seem like a ...

I beat this one a few years back playing mainly on my Steam Deck (both docked and handheld). I know that it's kind of XCOM-lite, but in some ways I kind of enjoyed it more than XCOM 2. In particular, I liked how the missions were broken up into bite-sized phases I really dislike spending turn after turn walking across an XCOM map before I even find the enemy. The way the phases are separated by...

After getting bored with MW5: Clans, I've struggled to get into any games. Part of that is just that things have been hectic here with moving, being sick, and not really having a "game space" settled in yet. I've entertained myself with a steady stream of used game purchases instead. Project Gotham Racing 2 is one of the latest. By the time this video posts, I should have the first one in the s...

Well, the Xbox 360 is showing it's age. The drive tray doesn't want to open. Reading about it, sounds like it might be as simple as a belt replacement but my fingers can't do the small work any more. Hell, they struggle with big work. I've never actually played Ghost Recon 2 and I wasn't aware it never even came out on PC. I've always like the first game, but I'm not sure about this one. I've been playing with the D1X Rebirth Source port of Descent for a couple of months now (and the corresponding D2X Rebirth port for Descent II). These play really well. If you've ever wanted to go back and play (or replay) these titles, I think this is a nice way to do it.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance [Steam Deck] [part 14]
One of the best RPGs ever made
So far I'm pretty impressed with it! Do you know if the previous games in the series are worth going back to play?
@bigratt51g I've not played the prequel, Nehrim. I've heard it's pretty good but with it being built off Oblivion it's really buggy and unstable, prone to crashes etc.
@@lewisphillips7223 Part of me (the sick, obsessive, completionist part) wants to go back and start at the beginning with SureAI's two Morrowind conversions. But I'm pretty sure if I fall down that rabbit hole I'll never get back to playing Enderal.
I've really enjoyed played UC2 - very consistent story (for FPS of course), unusual setting, a lot of familiar faces (Malcolm, Lauren e t.c.). IMO very underrated game.
I would have loved to be able to play some of these early Xbox Live games when they were new! Unfortunately at the time the best internet I could get was dial up.
I recently finished this game and it's really worth it, even if I didn't understand the story well haha and yeah, i agree with you in the deffense mission is a little weird and also i think is just one mission of that type because i dont remember another similar
That's good to know! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how much more I was going to play, but I think I'll give it some more time to hook me.
Its so misleading to just show the tutorials, which are nowhere near as demanding as playing in the open universe, performance drops are significant when playing in the open universe, it becomes basically unplayable und also looks like shit. Y'all need to stop acting like the game is playable only bc it runs good in the tutorial missions. The game shouldn't even be marked as playable and the verified status is a straight up lie.
I showed the tutorials because I wanted to be able to go back and compare after they reworked them in the Timelines update. I've been playing this game on my Steam Deck since long before it was marked verified and it's always ran relatively well for me. Of course there a performance drops -- I get those on my gaming PC with this game.
Love this game. The AC series was huge for me growing up.
Somehow I'd never even heard of the series until a friend clued me in a few years ago.
Nice vid :) If you’re on Insignia, we play this atleast 2-3 times online during the week on OG xbox. We also have a discord community dedicated to PGR2
That's awesome. My original Xbox died years back and I've not replaced it yet. Exploring these backwards compatible games is all I can do to scratch that itch at the moment.
Thanks for the video, was on the fence about getting it because of controls but seems it suits well with the deck controls. Think I'll get it, seems like a great space game.
Glad it helped! The native controller support is pretty good, but you might want to customize it a bit depending on how you like playing. The most obvious additions are probably to map the right TouchPad to mouse/leftclick and the left to a touch menu so you don't have to go into the ship menu all the time.
Yeah that's some nice ideas! Been battling the controls a bit, it does take some time getting used to, specially navigating the menus with the controller but this game seems worth it and I haven't even scratched the surface
@@frankiedaarddon't get fooled, the tutorial doesn't simulte the universe yet, as soon as you'll start playing in open universe performance will significantly drop and make the game mostly unplayable.
@@SuperDestructoid I've done the tutorial and yeah did have a few slow downs in the game itself but after looking around the Internet it's running with high textures, quality FSR ( everything else mostly low ) with 40 fps with the occasional drop, I'd say it's very playable after a dozen hours in but haven't been in a major ship battle yet.
im typing this on an OLED so i get it. thanks for uploading!
Hope you're aware that the Xbox version is very different than the PS2/Gamecube version
I read they had a different campaign. Do you know which out of the PS2 and GC versions plays better?
@bigratt51g I haven't played them yet, I just know some stuff from the wiki. For your information, the PS2/Gamecube version is called First Contact and the Xbox version is called Final Assault, there's also an expansion/sequel game for the Xbox campaign called Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike, which is only Xbox. This video by the devs does a very good job explaining the differences between the two games ua-cam.com/video/u8dH2BcF6kI/v-deo.html

Good lord man
Man, it was so hard to aim with a joystick at 18fps haha
So i can play her on Xbox 360!?
Yep! I picked up my copy for about $5 plus shipping on eBay. As I think I mentioned in the video description, the MP servers are long gone but you can play bot matches to check out this slice of history.
@bigratt51g i will definetly buy this version of Counter Strike for my xbox 360, this is the main reason why i bought Xbox 360 for such classics
Is it available in the xbox shop? Because only CS GO is listed and is no longer available.:(
No, unfortunately. This one was never backwards compatible with Xbox One and later consoles, and (like most OG Xbox games) never saw a digital release. So the only legit way to play it is to get the disc and run it on an original Xbox console or an Xbox 360.
🤘
is this goldsource or source?
goldsource
@@MazdoTheWolf beat me to it :)
It's goldsource and it seems to be based on condition zero
I like how the ambiances give the maps a feeling of being alive. In the original game, it felt like something was missing from the map.
I really enjoy exploring old CS maps for some reason. I spent some time looking around the Miami map and was thinking about including some gameplay since this version predates its appearance in Condition Zero.
You heavily rely on sound cues in cs game when playing on high level, the ambiance distracts.
Had no idea there was a CS for the og xbox
Yeah, I didn't know about it until fairly recently. I didn't have a broadband connection back then, so a lot of MP-focused game slipped under my radar. The best I can tell, development-wise it's kind of a half-step between CS and Condition Zero. There are some Condition Zero maps that seem to have debuted in this version.
@bigratt51g it's like an untouched archive of what could've been the current scene of shooter (at least the COD alternatve for consoles)
@Quaiver have you tried the Xbox 360 version of CSGO? It's an interesting little time capsule as well?
This tech is so inferior. Even 8y.o. mid level PC can run it better in FHD.
It's not intended to replace a PC. It's meant to be something I can pull out of my bag on a work trip and grab a few minutes of play. I thought it ran pretty decently for what it was. Where do you feel it falls short?
I was experiencing some lag with Tomb Raider 3 on the deck but was playing it on windows OS with a copy I found online. You find any lag running it normal on Steam OS?
I'll have to check that. I only tested the first level of the first game. Was there a particular point where it was lagging, or was it just a case of constant low performance?
@bigratt51g Thanks for the response. It was the first level after you slide down the big hill and go through the first swamp to the first main door area where there's a monkey . When I was moving around there I noticed frame drop . This was all with the remastered graphics . I don't recall if it did with classic graphics. I'm assuming it was because I have it running on windows I hope because I wouldn't mind playing the whole series on Steam OS . I just don't own the game yet .
@@unkles I loaded that level up today and played around in that first area. I'm getting a solid 60 fps with both old and new graphics. From what I'm seeing on ProtonDB, stable 60 seems to be what most people are getting on their Decks. I hope this helps you make your decision! Thanks for dropping by to chat.
@7mil3s Thanks for the reply again and the test . I definitely might consider purchasing it when I get the cash and reboot my Deck back to Steam OS for a playthrhough . 👌👌👌cheers.
just realized my last reply was under the wrong account -- @7mil3s. My mistake.
Was that an Apollo? It's been a while since I played.
Yes, it was! The speed of the Valkyrie probably makes it the better choice for this mission. But the boxy goodness of the Apollo takes me right back to playing this in 1999 😆
Wonder how would run on the deck.
I have tried Terran Conflict on Deck and it ran fine. If I am remembering correctly, I don't think it detected the controls so I had to use Steam to emulate mouse and keyboard, but this was two years ago.
Just bought this. Great review.
Thanks! Hope you have a great time with the game!
In cockpit view the game is unplayable due to low fps
100% -- I was so disappointed release night. In the video that follows this one you can see how bad I struggled with the fps during the Trial of Position (it shows the fps in first person going down into what looks like single digits). My wife surprised me with the new Galaxy Black Series X this past week and it plays so much better on that. We've been in the middle of a move, though, so I haven't been able to capture any gameplay yet.
@bigratt51g After the patch it's playable on the series S, but i still get fps drops from time to time
@@kevinh1792 That's awesome. I haven't went back to my Series S to test, but I've started running into some areas toward the end of the Courcheval invasion that are making the Series X chug a bit.
I need settings recommendations
For sure. We are in the middle of a move right now so I don't have my Steam Deck handy. But as soon as we get settled in I'll circle back to this and get that info to you.
Did you use linux runtime ? Or did tou you use proton ?
In reponse to this and your other question -- I'm not forcing Proton, so it's the Linux native version. Frame limit of 40 with integer scaling in the Steam performance settings. In game settings are 1280x800 rez, TAA antialiasing, AMD FSR balanced, and graphics quality low. I've heard people running it at higher quality levels, but I prefer the extra fps. Hope that helps!

X4: FOUNDATIONS is now steam deck verified and it’s now on sale for 14.99 on steam store
Do u recommend getting this game on the deck? Especially with that expensive price tag?
No -- it's nice to be able to play on Deck if you already own it, but I don't think most people would be satisfied with it as their primary experience. Value-wise, I don't know that I would suggest paying full price for it either. For $10 you can get essentially the same gameplay with older graphics with SWAT 4, and it has some excellent mods.
what the heck is this and why am i even watching this video
🤣 I can answer the first part, but not the second. This is a boring tutorial mission dropped on me while I am trying to play through the campaign.
Which program are you utilizing to record gameplay?
I'm using the Decky Recorder plugin for Decky Loader. decky.xyz/
@@bigratt51g awesome looks great
@@encendiogamer Thank you!
Love this vid
Glad you liked. I need to get back to this game.
How can I turn on HDR???
I'm afraid I don't have anything that is HDR-capable, so I'm not much help here. I did a bit of poking around online though, and I'm not sure if the devs have added support for HDR.
Wow thanks for this! I'm kinda surprised. This looks very playable. I know the multi ship management stuff could get tricky, but for just flying, trading, combat and missions, this looks absolutely workable, and that's more than enough game for me.
Glad you liked! This is one of my favorite games to come back to because there's just no "right" way to play it.
Woww, it looks f*ing cool! :D
It's somewhat minimalist graphics translate well to the Steam Deck screen. That, along with it's bite-sized missions, controller support, and low price point make it a nice game for any space-combat-loving Deck owner. It routinely drops to around US$6 in sales.
Is this game worth the time and money?
For me it has been. I came late to the party, but it's one of my most played games on Steam and I've picked up all of the DLC over time with no regrets. If you like space games, I'd encourage you to pick it up cheap to see if it fits your taste. You can often find the base game deeply discounted.
Great video.. Can you tell me how antistasi runs on the steam deck? I'm currently researching if its worth buying arma 3 for the Deck just for the antistasi mod :)
Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to explore Antistasi yet. I've had it downloaded for a while because I want to try it. In general though, I've been pleased with how the Deck has handled Arma 3. I probably have logged more hours playing it handheld than I have on my PC.
@@bigratt51g Glad to hear its playable.. been itching to play this game for years now but never had a PC.. Thx for the reply bro
@@Doomed2Wander Always happy to talk games. I put a lot of work into Steam Input to get a button mapping I liked, but it's definitely playable by my standards. I defined a touch menu for the left trackpad so I have easy access to things like my compass and binoculars. One thing I should mention that might turn some people off is that I have to play on the lowest difficulty setting while on handheld, otherwise the baddies will kill me while they are still too small for me to effectively hit.
When I play this game it’s like a lot of my controls don’t work. do I have to play with only keyboard and mouse ?
I set up a custom control scheme with Steam Input. For the most part it mirrors standard (gyro-enabled) shooter controls, but it also uses a touch menu and some input overloads (like double press or hold) to include all of the extra functionality I commonly use on PC.
Nice video, where you using keyboard or the in built controller for steam deck?
Thank you! I was using the Steam Deck controls. This video was captured while I was playing in handheld mode.
Wait, how do you only have the FPS, TDP and battery life overlay level? On mine it's either FPS only or bunch of other info like CPU/GPU usage.
I'm using a plugin called MangoPeel for Decky Loader that lets you customize the overlay.
Is this game better than X4?
I think the answer to that might depend on what you like and don't like about X4. I think overall I prefer X4, but this is a good game -- and since the engine is older it's not pushing my laptop nearly as hard as X4 does.
Not for steam deck. Never play it on steam deck. It's a insult to the game, wat a beautiful game. It needs a ps5 or high end pc . Steam deck is a great device..but not for this game thou
It's always fun to try to get software to run on something it shouldn't work on.
man, I loved this game, but I hated the stations 😀 sneaking through each duct, looking for treasures, listen to the same old stupid music loop 😀
I definitely remember scooting around the ducts in X Rebirth!
@@bigratt51g yees! rebirth! haha
Nice, that runs on the steam deck! The Crimson Inclination is a fun mission set
I've really been enjoying it on Deck. I've played it on and off for years, but I'm hoping to finally complete all of the DLC before Clans is released.
How did you managed 40fps lock? I got max 25-30 and not even nearly stable on Kingdom End. Can you please share your settings?
I've updated the video description with my current settings. I still get some major fps dips when I'm playing in sandbox and approach a busy area that loads a lot of assets, but it still runs smoother than it did when I tried to play it on deck last year. If I had to put my finger on one thing, I'd say the PowerTools plugin for Decky Loader is probably helping. When I started testing out settings for Mechwarrior 5 a while back, the PowerTools settings gave me a nice little performance bump.
sure does eat the battery but at least it looks playable. Not too sure about gameplay in any heavily populated area or big battles though. Thanks for the benchmark vid.
I'll probably start a fresh save once I get tired of playing the Timelines missions. We'll see how it holds up. Thanks for stopping by!
I’m just reinstalling it because I noticed today they released a update to improve steam deck performance specifically
@@honeybadger9425 Nice. I haven't been keeping track of the updates closely. Please let me know how it works for you.
Are you running this on an oled deck ?
No, I've got one of the original 512GB models with the antiglare screen.
New DLSS injector mod came out It turns the Native DLSS (which is normally grayed out) ON And runs as FSR3 With frame generation Also after installing Go into the render.infi file and change bLensDistortion to false And it runs and looks like the Series S (in handheld)

Thanks for watching! I've been trying to learn the board game and I thought this would be an interesting way to familiarize myself with the miniatures.
@@bigratt51g No problem! How long have you been in the boardgame scene?
@@witherrose1566 The most honest answer would probably be that I've never really been into the scene. It's not a popular hobby where I'm at. I've just always enjoyed the Mechwarrior games and turn-based tactics games, so I thought I'd try to learn more about it. I have a game set up on an extra table in my office and I play both sides. This was actually a pretty cool game. It's not the kind of thing I usually play, but every time I see your comment in my queue I think about how much fun I had playing through this first section.
how do you like playing this on switch?
There's probably a bit of a graphical downgrade going on, but I haven't seen anything I would complain about. I test a lot of games on my Steam Deck, so lower graphical settings and 720p/1080p output feels normal to my eyes. I've actually forgotten I was playing on Switch a few times.
