Additive Manufacturing Technologies - Laser-based Directed Energy Deposition
Laser Directed Energy Deposition (LDED) is an additive manufacturing process in which a focused laser beam is employed to melt and fuse metal powder or wire onto a substrate, layer by layer, thereby constructing a three-dimensional object. This technique is commonly used for repairing or adding material to existing components, as well as for manufacturing complex metal structures with precision.

Thank you for the video
We are using arc spray and HVOF spray. The video is very good.
8:01 yttrium stabilized zirconium, applied on all land base Turbines. Chrome oxide , chrome oxide Titanium silica dioxide, Metco 136cp used in Texas on compressor rods in the early 1980s among other applications. Pure chrome oxide with a tantalum bond coat then sealed . Used in fertilizer plants
I started with a leased browning hvof gun, then leaner guns based on this technology, then jet coat , Diamond jet,, JP 5000 , JP 8000
I first used Metco 4e gun, also started my education on 2 Mx plasma the 3mc unit, now I’m working with 9mc plasma with the same 3mb gun I worked wit40 years ago
I used Rokied flame spray z- rods calsium base zirconium. When plasma technology was not yet well known. Mogul rokied gun. Missle cones.
Arc gun is inexpensive application of flame spray aluminum, but flame spray using Metco wire is very high Deposit efficiency and control
Tony Dunn 1982 to present working with Flame spray now Thermal spray.
What is the formula and how to calculate the ovelay dilution in a pipe?
A nice & precise Vlog... Thanks for sharing.
Crazy thing is I’ve been Metallizing and started out on Metco 12E flame spray in 1996 now I’m running JP8000 and have run everything in between including Metco 5p powder and Tafa, praxair, Metco SmartArc twin wire arc, and many HVOF systems starting with JetKote, Diamond jet, JP5000 and now JP8000. Nice video
You gave very interesting explanations about plasma technology. I am interested in trying this device. How to buy a Metco plasma gun?
Admirable workshop, and also perfectly clean and organized.
The world, especially the poor countries, still do not understand how much the Chinese have made life easier and cheaper, All the technology that the West has kept for itself whether by exorbitant price or by secrecy, Any equipment that once you had to be sold your house to bought it, today. You can for a few hundred or a few thousand dollars. You buy it from the Chinese. Also what is special about the Chinese is not only the price, they are also not afraid that you have the technology to compete with them, This probably stems from high self-confidence they have and a very liberal and honest attitude, which the West does not have.
It was a great explanation I am doing research for which I want the dataset to train the AI model to optimize directed energy deposition using laser can you provide me with that
very informative and important video. thanks.
very good thanks.
we were spraying aluminum in russia i was very interested with this technology but tool was expensive and factory was not allowing it to disassembly.
Great content! keep uploading
Oh Arkadi, I really wish I could be there!
Great job explaining the DED / LMD process and its advantages. I am definitely not in your expected target audience, but you explained this in terms that even someone like me can understand :-).
Thank you!
Curious about your use of the term “DED” vs “LMD” - I feel like DED is the old term and LMD has rapidly become the new standard. I have never heard LPD used personally. And then “EHLA” vs “HS-LMD” is another discussion…
To many terms, which all have more the same meaning. A couple of years ago, I wrote sarcastic article about that. Maybe it will hlep you a little: Article 2: Laser Cladding has many names www.linkedin.com/pulse/article-2-laser-cladding-has-many-names-arkadi-zikin? As for DED somehow it is just most commonly used term...
@@TechnologieswithArkadi I would say DED used to be the most common term for sure, but from what I have seen, most conferences and recent publications are moving away from this term to more specific descriptive terms like LMD, especially over the last 5 years. When you are focusing on Laser processes (not electron beam etc), I was wondering why not use the laser-specific terminology? Also, I started a new wikipedia article on Laser Metal Deposition a few weeks ago, any contributions would be very welcome. A lot more on laser cladding nozzle types (coaxial, multi-jet etc) is still needed! 🙂
That's why I always use 'Laser-based DED' in front of DED :) You're right; the common term doesn't always accurately represent the process, considering the varied energy sources. Interestingly, I had a similar discussion with a professor at ETH after my lecture last week. I also have a passion for LMD! Of course, I'd be happy to help. Do you have a link?
@@TechnologieswithArkadi en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_Metal_Deposition -- there's a few diagrams on the "wiki/Cladding_(metalworking)" page as well I was thinking of migrating over as well. And thanks for the excellent videos as always!
3d print with a thermitic flux paste containing metallic material. If you can get the chemical composition correct once its printed youll be able to set the print on the ground, ignight it, and it will self adhere the same way rail ties are thermitically welded. Direct heat applications like this will only ever cause warping unless you create sophisticated expensive solutions that arent worth the time. Ask someone like 3M, or other chemical manufacturers to take a shot at it.
It is your opinion and thank you for sharing it. However before to make an industrial statement a couple of references would be useful.
Very cool to hear from someone with so much time in the field, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this meeting.
Does that mean the brake will ear out the cladding
This is good job
one thing I wish you'd covered is the thermal limitations of this technology ie limits of what you can coat based on the temperature of the spray on the substrate. Otherwise, great series!
Thank you for your valuable feedback. Can be itself a topic for a lecture
Powder due to micro porosity will never durable for the multi cycle stress. So this technology already are not suitable for aircraft parts manufacturing.
Laser cladding is already commonly used for repair of turbine blades. And that since decades. Powder is used as a filler material. However, i would agree with you for PBF process...
Powder will lose to the wire with process productivity
Thats a very generic statement. Strongly depends on process, its complexity. An example from high-speed world - 300 micron coating with powder flow over 200g/min for brake discs... As for DED - www.linkedin.com/posts/arkadi-zikin_wire-powder-ded-activity-7100048870792933376-vBSI?
Velikolepno! Uznal mnogo novogo!
What is about chrome plating or Nickel plating
Which coating can deposit 1.5mm thick Ni-Cr-B having hardness 60-62HRc.
I would do that with laser
If you are serious give me your email.
I might be able to help you with that.
We need full anslysis on HVOF vs Plasma gas spray
HVAF
Great video with good explanation of fine dust problem
Thank you!
This is a great format, Arkadi. Keep it up!
takes some time to prepare, but I will coma back to that idea!
Hey what’s the empirical relation between coating thickness and coating parameters in APF
Thanks for the information. It would be better if you demonstrate the sinplex pro and nitrogen hydrogen mixture working conditions also.
I will talk to Peter about that
Informative
Thank you!
very good basic information on Metco's line of HVOF technology
Thank you! That’s also the main idea - basic information
Great Arkadi !!
Thank you, it is all about Peter
If you want to best life component, you needs heat threatment and coating Technologies
👍
Good to see you both on this topics of discussion and explanation 👍
Thank you, my friend! I hope all well on your side!
very interesting! How much distortion would probably happen on a 100 mm diameter shaft, 3 meter long, with 2 bearing areas for cladding overlay 5 mm with a 65%WC Co allow (each area 200 mm long), substrate K500 monel What would your expectation of distortion
Hello @StephenBoothdocturbo, to estimate the distortion on a shaft during a cladding process, we need to consider several factors, including the thermal stresses introduced by the welding process, the physical properties of the materials involved, and the geometry of the shaft. But, for example, we can achieve 50% or 30% less material distortion compared to using conventional welding processes like arc welding.
🎶 ρɾσɱσʂɱ
It's a very informative video sir. Please keep covering all the aspects of laser cladding and also how the laser parameters affect the quality of coatings !! This is just my suggestions. Thank you Sir 😊
Thank you for your feedback! I hope I will find time for that!
you can download the slides?
I am sorry, I don’t plan to share the slides.
Thats cool.. but how strong are parts compared to billet.. What the point of this if parts are substantially weaker.??
Thats very good question. We are working to find that out!
Simply Fascinating and mind blowing
Thank you!
