I started this channel as an extra to the blog I've managed for over 10 years, so it'll be videos of the things I've been up to, like managing our allotment plot and other gardening related adventures, and what we do with some of the things we grow.
There'll be wood working projects including wood turning along with DIY jobs, and as we have a make do and mend attitude when things break I'll post fixes for them as well (that's if I can fix them)

Barometer renovation.
A video in which I make a new case for the barometer I purchased, I think it's a better fit for the style of barometer, and I'm pleased with the overall result, including reusing wood from an old pub table and stool set that was destined for the bin, part way through the video is an image of the other barometer I recently renovated, although all that one needed was a refresh to the teak case.

How to tidy up a hole using a forstner bit.
Переглядів 1 тис.14 днів тому
Recently I needed to make some minor repairs to an oak unit, a hole, presumably for cables had been chopped into the back of it, and it wasn't very neat, so I tidied it up, I used a fostner bit, but a hole saw would work just as well, and you could use the same method. #woodworking #howto #tips
Simple cat scratcher
Переглядів 30Місяць тому
A quick slide show of the steps I used to make a cat scratcher, luckily I had some wood which worked well for this as it already had grooves in it. Overall it cost nothing in materials to make, it's all recycled stuff and the cat seems to like it. #woodworking #pets #howto
Rhubarb wine

A short video on how to make rhubarb wine, or at least how we do it, it's a simple recipe and works well, the resulting wine is very nice and has a good flavour. #winemaking #homemade #howto
Hanging snowman Christmas decoration

simple to make wooden christmas tree decorations, these are made from scrap wood and don't require any special tools, they're easy for kids to make as well. (There was an issue with the first video, so I've uploaded it again) #woodworking #craft #christmascrafts
Removing paint from door hinges
Переглядів 1 тис.Рік тому
A short how to on removing paint from door hinges, I use a blow torch because it's quick and I'm lazy, but you could just wire brush the hinges, or use a heat gun (the kind for stripping paint) solvents would work as well, like the liquid paint stripper you can buy, I just prefer this method. Works on steel hinges, I'd be careful if the hinges are brass though, easiest way to tell would be to u...
Homemade copper slug rings.
Переглядів 582Рік тому
A short slideshow on how we made some slug rings to protect our young sunflower plants, so far they are working, usually the slugs have eaten loads of plants by now, but this year they've left them alone for the most part. #gardening #gardeningtips #gardener
Window Fix
Переглядів 48Рік тому
A short video of a much needed repair to one of our sets of wood framed double glazed windows. You can see in the video that the bead that holds the glazed unit in has started to rot, so I had to cut out the bad wood and replace the bead with good wood, it was easy enough to do and it's worth taking your time, especially if you use a chisel. The alternative to doing this kind of repair maybe to...
Replacing a failed sealed unit
Переглядів 2 тис.2 роки тому
This is a job I've finally got round to fixing, basically one of the double glazed units (sealed units) in our wood framed double gazed windows failed a while ago, by that I mean condensation was building up between the 2 panes of glass and rather than replace the whole frame i decided to just replace the sealed unit. I found a company near to us who can make sealed units to whatever spec you w...
Allotment Update - belated post
Переглядів 422 роки тому
I've combined our two most recent trips to the plot into one video as I'm behind with various things. You can see the difference a few weeks make to some of the plants we're growing (especially the rhubarb, which I've spelt wrong in the video) #allotment #growyourown #gardening
Allotment update, something ate the broad beans...
Переглядів 352 роки тому
I'm a bit late uploading this video, things have been a little hectic over the last few weeks, but they're settling down now so I can focus on various things, like the plot. This visit is from a couple of weeks ago and as you'll see some kind of rodent has eaten all the broad bean seeds we planted. #allotment #growyourown #gardening
Allotment Update - Making a start
Переглядів 172 роки тому
This video is from the start of March, it was juts a quick trip to the plot, mainly to do some tidying and get some broad beans planted, we also did the annual grape prune. There were still a few things to harvest as well, like the last of our sprouts and some kale and some other bits. #allotment #gardening #growyourown
Thumb turn lock
Переглядів 822 роки тому
Following on from the reclaimed door I was working on I decided to re-use the old latch set that cam with it, this has meant making a thumb turn set for the latch, which has turned out better than I expected it would. The video is quite long despite me cutting out a lot of stuff. #woodworking #woodturning #recycling
Turning a Darning mushroom
Переглядів 7342 роки тому
A short video of me turning a darning mushroom for my daughter, who has recently started to mend her own clothes in creative ways, this little mushroom is helping her to mend socks and other items. It's made from a piece of Nordmann fir tree (christmas tree) and I turned a groove into it so material can be secured in place with string or a rubber band, I also made another one for my wife to use...

Thanks
Thank you very much indeed for this very well explained video.
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching
Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
Don't put root or seeds on your compost heap, as you may end up spreading the docks around.
Thank you! You've reassured be while replacing my broken Hamilton Beach belt.
Glad I could help!
Good, helpful video. Last time I had to replace a unit on a patio door I paid a tradesman to do it. He said there was far too much sealant on the frame. I see you do it the same way as me. Cardboard against the glass is a good tip. Thanks for that!
Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful
Only issue with this is being a taproot every section of root left in turns into another plant. You left two in you get two plants. An endless battle
Yes, the plant has long tap roots, I've dug out ones that are almost a meter long, thanks for watching
Perfect!! I have all the bits for this 👍🏾
The comfrey leaf is fuzzy, the foxglove is smooth
suitable for mortars mixer?
Haven't tried, but I think it might work for small amounts, thanks for watching
Kak vanbel nya putus beli dimana kak., dan ukuran brpa klo beli di shopie
You will need to buy the correct size for your machine, if you have the old belt you can use this as a reference, thanks for watching
That’s a really nice project for some old shelves to new true! With the handle tucking out of the way you could do a neat set of 3 that nest together. 👍 One tip, when there are lots of pieces that need the same operation (eg drilling the pilot holes in all the slats) then lining them all up to do together makes it really quick 👌
Thank you!! I have been looking for a straight to the point tutorial and this is first one I found finally
Glad you found it useful, thanks for watching.
I have a Kenwood FP450, drive belt has gone, managed to get new’un, but after removing the 3x base security screws there doesn’t seem to be anyway of getting it apart? Had difficulty finding a schematic drawing of it in online. Any ideas of how to get into these things?
Without having a look at it I can't be sure, sometimes there are screws hidden under the labels on the bases of electrical devices, and under the rubber feet, I've had that before.
☺️👍
These have worked amazingly well, we haven't lost a single sunflower seedling to slugs
What is the purpose of adding steel wool to the stuffing?
It's an old trick that helps keep the pins and needles sharp, thanks for visiting
Thankyou
Your welcome, thanks for visiting.
pocket hole screws?
Yes you could use pocket holes to make this, thanks for visiting
Excellent, thank you.
You are welcome!
Good job
Thanks
Curious, why didn’t you use wood screws?
No reason other than I felt like using nails, but wood screws would do just as well. Thanks for watching
Thankyou 👍🏻😁
No problem, thanks for watching
...I think they turned out quite nice...👍 Perhaps if you stabilized the blocks with cactus juice, they would have held together better and cut down on the dust...however it does make the wood very hard so turning takes a little longer... But nicely done! Matt

do you sell these anywhere? these are lovely!

Weeds are food
Yes, a lot of what people class as weeds can be eaten, dandelions are an example of that, but care should be taken when foraging for food, dock contains oxalic acid so care should be taken when processing it for eating. Another thing to consider is that these dock plants were growing on an allotment plot and many local councils have rules regarding the control of perennial weeds on allotment plots.
What a waste!! Dock is a very delicious and beneficial green. If you're going to dig them up, cook and EAT THEM!! The root is has very beneficial medicinal properties as well.
(no arguments are set by this comment so please don't start one) Me personally would not find it a waste because dock weeds contain oxalic toxins and you need to be careful cooking it and eating.
Tinctures can be made if you know what you’re doing
Brilliant! Informative, easy to understand, and concise! Thanks very much.
Glad it was helpful!
I know this is an old video but can you Kindly tell me the size of the "dowel Rod" that you use for the pole and how long did you make your handle. I am about for the 1st time fix mine and I love the way you did yours fast and easy. From USA Arkansad
No worries, the rod was a hardwood decking spindle and it's around 900mm long (35.4 inches approx) the diameter of the spindle was 35mm (1.5 inches approx) and the length I did so it was comfortable for my arms and hands (I have quite long arms) so I would cut your new handle to a size that feels comfortable for you, hope this helps, thanks for visiting
Nice Job
Thanks for the visit
Hellooo, thanks for the helpful video actually showing how to pull. I spent a few hours today not getting to the bottom of the root, I can see that now! Question, what would when the dock is surrounded by perfectly good and healthy grass? Would it ruin the grass to use the fork all around it? And what do you do after you pull them out - do you put down a weed killer? Thanks!
You should be able to get the dock plant even in grass / lawns although you'd need to take a bit more care and after I've pulled them out I hope I've got all the root as I don't use weedkillers, it doesn't always work and sometime they come back. Thanks for watching
Foxglove is poisonous
Poisonous to injest that is a beautiful flower digitalis is just not edible
This is so helpful - really appreciate the time you've taken to put this together and will explore that link. Cheers!

Suddenly I have loads of these blighters!!! Many thanks for the way to go : )

Broad-leaved dock is one of the foodplants of the caterpillars of the Small copper butterfly.
There's no reason to remove all the dock from your garden or allotment plot, a lot of gardeners I know leave an area to go wild to attract pollinators and other insects. Thanks for watching
I let this go to see one year, now I’m digging and trashing each one. I was told not to touch them, but not finding that info.
Letting dock go to seed will cause you more work, when we don't have time to pull them up we cut them back to make sure they don't set seed, but apart from using herbicides pulling them up by the root seems a good method of getting rid of them, thanks for watching.
great clear explanation and exactly what I was looking for! I have just transplanted a foxglove into my garden believing it was comfrey! So I can't use it for making liquid feed, but it's purple flowers will attract pollinating insects.
Glad you found the guide useful, thanks for watching
My processor button is jammed not working what to do..its new machine
If it's a new machine and you have purchased it within the last year (and you have the receipt) you should be able to take it back to the shop where you got it, failing that you can try taking it apart and seeing if you can free the button, but this will void any warranties you have on it. Thanks for watching
Great video! Could you write a note about your cleaning methods to avoid bacteria build-up?
At the moment I'm only storing the water for 24 hours at most (we have a lot of plants) but there are various methods for making the water safer, such as using an additive, which will help prevent bacteria build up, there are various filtration methods as well, such as sand filters, and mechanical filters. Thanks for watching
Pls belt price.
They can be bought for about £8 online, thanks for watching
I think I have a comfrey plant growing at the base of the wall of my house and I can't dig it out cos the roots are underneath the tarmac of my drive. I've seen purple flowers on comfrey plants but theses are creamy colour 🤔. I cut it down but it just gets bigger.
Comfrey does have purple coloured flowers and there's a variety with white flowers, you can try pouring a small amount of white vinegar onto the root once you've cut it back, and if you can make a hole into the top of the root and pour the vinegar into it that'll help, it's a very vigorous plant.
Wrong; first you put the belt on the small bearing then you put it on half of the big wheel and then you turn the big wheel by your hand until the belt takes its place and don’t use screw driver otherwise you will damage the teeth of the belt Abs the screw driver will extend the size of the belt and becomes not so tide . Never ever use screw drive to feet the belt , maybe you can use it to take og’ff the old belt not the new one .
Do you watch the video? He loosened the motor, he didn't use the screw driver to feed the belt on to the pulley or the drive. 🤷♂
One does not want these on your land! Each plant has up to 24,000 seeds. It will take years to clean the land.
They are a pain, I dig them up when ever I see them, thanks for watching
Thanks for the info, didn't know how long the root is
Broad-leaved dock is one of the foodplants of the caterpillars of the Small copper butterfly.
Good information here, I did the same thing with my blackberry plant but tipped them into plant pots so it was tidy. It took just over 4 weeks for them to root. I did a short video of the results which produced 9 new plants. This is the first time I have done this, so I hope they work and progress. Thanks.
Many plants like Blackberries propagate quite easily, I've also done the same with blackcurrant bushes and ornamental plants like wisteria, thanks for watching
Tell me please quickly
Not sure what you are asking, if it's a model then this one is - fp108 series whether it is the same internally as the fp190 I can't say, it may well have a similar drive belt set up if that's what you're asking
@@shedandbeyond where
@@shedandbeyond please I have the problem of opening back for carbon brush
It should be a case of undoing the screws in the bottom, once those are out the bottom comes away and you can get at the internals, including the motor
@@shedandbeyond screws are open but how to open the cover
FP 190 series Kenwood
Good video well explained repaired my tumble dryer after watching videos my surprise was the really simplistic way these machines work but as you say parts procurement are more challenging Well done
Thanks for watching, glad you found the video useful
Nice job on that little sander. Easily as good or much better than store-bought. Good idea having a few set up with most used grits - easy to swap in & out. Thanks for sharing. (Now, i need to go hunt around for an old bearing).
Thanks for watching, it's a very handy thing to have around
