Episode 19 - Trypiti Gorge | The White Mountains of Crete | Season 1 (4K)
The White Mountains of Crete is a unique mountain range unlike any other in the world. At an altitude of 2000 meters they form an alpine desert, with an otherworldly scenery. The terrain is dark full of dips, potholes and craters, while the mountaintops are strikingly white, because of the limestone. This unique geological formations create a trully incredible lunar landscape, that enchants any who will hike there.
Follow us on our journey to hike and explore the White Mountains of Crete. In the span of 20 episodes we will hike in the alpine desert, reach thhe most extraordinary peaks, visit their breathtaking gorges.
It is time for Trypiti, the second least accesible gorge in the range. It is a desolate place, wild, beautiful, fortified by the surrounding mountains. There are very specific access routes to the gorge's bed, but each of them is without a trail and no markings. To decend you must have a lot of experienced in off trail hiking, excellent navigation and orientation skills, exxellent phhysical shape and you must have adequete praparation. Many people have gotten lost here and some have perished as the got stranded for days. If you are not familiar with the terratory do not attempt this hike as it can prove dangerous and fatal.
The gorges is engulfed by the mountain of Koriaris at the west, Strifomadi, Gigilos and Volakias at the north, Volakias, Psiristra, Kokkinavari, Kouvara and Katsaromoura at the east.
The northest point of the gorge is the col of Gigilos. From the south feet of Gigilos and Volakias start several small gorges that unite in Trypiti. The gorge ends at the eere Trypiti Beach.
The classic route of Trypiti Gorge, that spans the whole legth of it, crossing it from north to south.
The hike starts from Xyloskalo, you take the E4 trail, passing by the amazing landslides of Gigilos and you reach the Col. There is a mountain spring in this part of the hike. For more information about this section you can check out Episode 3.
From the Col of Gigilos you see to the south Trypiti. You traverse south-east heading to a ridge. Once on the ridge you will spot the Mitato of Tzatzimos to your east.
The idea of the decend is to follow a very specific ridgeline, or as the locals call it ''Armi''. This ''Armi'' takes you to the bed and it is the only way down from this point of the gorge. You decend heading south and you encouter the ridgeline and you stick to it. At many points you need to maneuver left or right but you are never to leave the ridgeline and go downhill to any direction.
The gorge has 3 watrfalls that you must bypass. So be weary as you hike to spot the stone marks, that mark the bypass points.
Eventually the Gorge ends at Trypiti beach, where you can camp and rest. You can arrange for a taxi boat to pick you up and get you to the nearby Sougia village. From Sougia you can return to Omalos by car or Bus.
Also from Trypiti beach you can take the E4 either east to Agia Roumeli or West to Sougia. But both hikes are long and difficult. Its 12 km to Agia Roumeli with about 800m elevation gain and on many challenging sections. To Sougia its 10km with about 400m elevation gain.
Attention! Only attemp this hike if you are experienced and in an excellent physical shape! Carrying equiptment to camp all this distance and maneuvering the obstacle inside the gorge takes skill and effort.

Awesome video. This year I saw this route when I went to Gavdos by boat. The boat took 1.5h for this route. Cant imagine how insanely conditioned you must be to be able to pull this off, especially in the heat.
@@salzstreuer8065 haha glad you liked the video. Actually the weather helped a lot. It was very cloudy and I did the hard part( Agia Roumeli to Domata) in the shade.
Hello John, you mention Aradena as the 2nd largest gorge in the White Mountains and Elygia as the 3rd largest. How about Tripiti? I would consider it much larger than both of these.
Hi! well Trypiti is also a very large gorge! It should be about 11km , from the col of Gigilos to the beach (although the hiking distance within the bed of the gorge is about 8km). Aradena is 15km starting from Drakolaki cave. The bridge is in the middle of the gorge. So the usual hike , bridge to Marmara you be actually hiking half the gorge. Eligias should be just shy of 15 km, starting at Potamos. Sfakiano gorge is also very big, alsmost 12km long , starting from Niato plateau with the exit near to Chora Sfakion. That should make Sfakiano the 4rth largest gorge in the White Mountains. I would say that Trypiti should be 5th largest. You can see in google maps Aradena, Eliagias, Sfakiano and Trypiti and do a raw lenght comparisson, also use an app like wikiloc to compare hiking distances. But these kind of things doesn't really matter. All of these gorges are really beautiful and each has has special features. Note that Eligias and Trypiti, both have high difficulty level , each for different reason. One should not hike either without proper experience and guidance.
@@iankasiolas9 Tripiti 'feels' much longer than either Elygia, Sfakiano or Aradena (the full gorge) and is certainly a lot more difficult
@@west-crete well how you feel it it's completely subjective. Trypiti is still a shorter gorge than the other. But I still don't think it really matters. Each one is unique. Have you hiked Trypiti?
@@iankasiolas9 Yes, I've hiked all of them except only the lower part of Klados, not the through way
@@west-crete wow! That's impressive! I am planning to go to Trypiti next month !
Beautiful! I want to walk from Hora Sfakia to Loutro in April. Is this what you did? How difficult is it? Thanks!
@@gadryn thank you, yes I walked from Sfakia to Elafonisi. Sfakia to Loutro is 6 km with little elevation gain. Interesting about the other name of Mesa Soros, I didn't know it. But I think that the 2397m altitude you mention is not correct. Mesa Soros is marginally lower than Svourichti
Yes! You are correct! This is the altitude according to The Mountaineering Association of Chania, but its not right. I recorded a much lower altitude with my watch when i was at the peak.
