Nestled high in the Taurus Mountains of Turkey, Termessos is often called the “Eagle’s Nest” for its nearly inaccessible location at 1,000 meters above sea level. Founded by the mysterious Solymians around the 4th or 5th century BCE, this ancient Pisidian city was one of the few places to remain unconquered by Alexander the Great, who famously bypassed it in 333 BCE due to its impenetrable natural defenses.
Termessos flourished under Roman rule, retaining a unique degree of autonomy while building stunning structures like its iconic Hellenistic theater and an elaborate necropolis filled with ornate tombs. The city worshipped Zeus Solymeus, but much of its culture remains shrouded in mystery.
After a devastating earthquake in the 5th century CE destroyed its aqueducts, Termessos was abandoned, leaving behind hauntingly beautiful ruins. Today, it’s preserved within Güllük Mountain National Park, earning recognition from UNESCO for its historical and cultural significance. Termessos stands as a testament to resilience, mystery, and architectural brilliance.

      @@PathstothePastPresentFuture Türkiye is the country with the most Roman/Greek heritage with more than +70 ancient theaters. Arykanda and Myra should definitely be seen. As far as I know, there are about 15 ancient theaters in Antalya alone.

    • @PathstothePastPresentFuture
      @PathstothePastPresentFuture 4 години тому

      @onurkalayco6267 Türkiye is often misunderstood for its incredibly rich history, which dates back thousands of years! In my opinion, due to its unique location throughout ancient times and even today, it was the center of the known World. I started a list of Theaters to visit and came up with 74. I have a feeling there may be more, but due to pilferage, earthquakes, and time, they are just out of site beneath the sands of time.

      Arykanda looks to be in the region that has several ancient cities north of Myra. We were supposed to travel there in December but due to the constant rains we cancelled the trip. I need to post a list of ancient cities and then have everyone vote on which ones they want me to explore.

    I think the funniest thing about people that think about the past is they were just as smart as we are right now generally speaking , we just have access to more knowledge as individuals today and therefore come to the conclusion that we are so much smarter than we used to be but really they were just as smart as us otherwise they couldn't have achieved all the things they did historically. It alway cracks me up knowing how people think about people from the past.

    • @AppalachianChaplin
      @AppalachianChaplin 20 годин тому

      Its an odd perception for sure. I personally believe they were smarter. In the sense of being more in tune with nature, how to use regenerative methods instead of destructive, etc. They thought about all the small details we do now, if not more. These seats, Roman roads being built at a very slight angle towards the edge in order to allow rain water to run off instead of pool up, entire documentaries worth of examples exist. And somehow, people still think we are so far ahead simply because we have the microchip...when in reality, life was probably far better at peak advancement pre-tech.

      I think there’s a reasonable argument to be made that they (the educated or craftsmen) were more intelligent, certainly more capable than the average US population today.

    • @PathstothePastPresentFuture
      @PathstothePastPresentFuture 11 годин тому

      To think that the people back then were not as intelligent compared to modern people is a great conversation! When I see ruins that are somewhat still intact from over 1500 years ago compared to easily our structures can disappear into ash...well, that says something about their ingenuity and craftmanship.

    • @PathstothePastPresentFuture
      @PathstothePastPresentFuture 11 годин тому

      To imagine not being or having the distractions of our tech today is something you can experience among the ruins. To stand on the edge of a wall overlooking a valley 2000 years ago with nothing but light and dark separating your days had to provide plenty of time to hone the skills to survive and figure 'things' out without interruption; except maybe your stomach growling for food that you had to go catch or pick.
