Stratton, VT - ◊ Upper Middlebrook (1-4-25) [4K]
Took a break from the trees to get a quick cruiser break! This runs right next to Shooting Star and I'm sure is a joy to lap when it runs on peak days. Not much else to say about this one other than I'm fairly certain you can't get to Squirrel's Nest from here - only from Upper Downeaster.
Advice: Mind the intersection near Shooting Star, I guess?

Nice glade run off the side of Free Fall. The trail itself was quite nice all things considered! The trees are quite sparse, but this seems to be a nice entry-level Double Diamond glade on the mountain and definitely one I'd recommend if there's enough snow. Not present in the video was me fumbling while trying to put the GoPro into the slot on my helmet for over 2 minutes in the -25°F wind chi...

Free Fall seems like an odd trail at Stratton because of how short it is and how impossible it is to lap. There are so many cool glade trails on either side, but you have to take two lifts to hit anything in this area. The trail itself isn't too bad and is honestly the easiest Double Diamond on the mountain if you ask me, probably easier than Upper Spruce. Advice: Not much to say about the trai...

This video is probably not the conditions you'll be experiencing if you plan on hitting this, but they had just opened this with snowmaking whales intact and thought I'd give it a shot! Overall very icy, though that's kinda expected from these conditions. The top quarter was also super thin cover and my skis definitely weren't a fan. But I won't dock too many points for that because that's on m...

Upper Downeaster is a run I was disappointed wasn't open last time I was here. Glad I got to hit it this time around! It's quite a short run (hence the addition of the easier trail before it in this video) but it packs a bit of a punch for a mountain like Stratton. Not exactly sure why they made an upper/lower of this trail considering how different and incompatible the lower half is - would've...

I remember being too afraid to do this run without my parents the last season I was here, which had to have been over a decade ago. I assumed they kept this trail ungroomed for some reason, which so far this season does not seem to be the case. It wasn't too bad there's only one steepish part but I guess there isn't the lift anymore to get you back out of the ravine and now you have to go all t...

Last run of the day - thought I'd dip into the woods for just a little bit. Snow was good but unfortunately I spent most of the day with tunnel vision on the Front Four, so I didn't really think about the woods until it was too late. This run ended in the beginner area so I took some of the footage out since it was kinda boring. This was a good one and I'm looking forward to hitting some more g...

The spruce side of the resort had better coverage than the stuff under the gondola, which I have conveniently left out of my video lineup because wow it sucked. Whirlaway was a nice alternative to the icy madness closer to the main side, though I only ended up doing this run because Spruce Line looked very nice from the lift but ended up being closed. Anyways, that guy at the start was missing ...

Lookout follows the liftline of the double chair of the same name. This was the last double diamond I was able to hit today, and it did not disappoint! Plenty of natural snow to go around, even if there was a bit of ice here and there. The upper third wasn't open today so I had to cut across via S-53 like with Starr. A very nice run, though there were some crazy drops near the in the middle por...

This was a bit of a tough one and definitely gives the Front Four a fun for their money! I'm surprised this one isn't classified as a double diamond as it felt on par with Liftline. Maybe it was just the conditions though, as the top was pretty rough. This felt like an easier version of Prima at Vail where most of the difficulty is concentrated in a couple long but steep sections that are inter...

Another nice natural terrain run, though like the rest of the hard stuff the upper portion was closed. This was a bit of a cut-across through S-53, and I missed the entrance to that the first time I tried to get here. Conditions were pretty good, though you can certainly see some of the ice on the middle part of Starr when it runs next to the Lookout Double. This is one of the "front four" at S...

Goat seems like (arguably) the hardest marked and in-bounds run at Stowe, though I still haven't skied here enough to tell you for sure. Plus, the very upper portion of the trail wasn't open, gonna have to come back to hit that one some other time. Anyways, what was open was pretty steep and honestly more challenging than I expected! Another nice run off the main side of the resort, though the top of National was pretty rough. The very top "drop-in" part of the trail was closed, hoping that's open if I can get back up here for spring break. Took a wrong turn, meant to do lower National, but the run is more or less the same. I'd recommend this one if Liftline looks good, though you will definitely get an idea of Upper Nation...

First real run of the day at Stowe! This was my first time here in about a decade - last time I was here I was too afraid to do anything harder than a blue. This was a nice run, though certainly on the easier side of the double diamond spectrum. Plenty of "loud powder" to go around, though Haychute certainly isn't immune to icy spots from the amount of traffic it gets. I would definitely recomm...

My favorite trail at Stratton! You gotta get to it early when it's freshly groomed!
Just did this yesterday after 7" snowfall overnight. Bonkers trail.
What you did was just the groomed traverse to peak 6, hence why it's a catwalk and a dotted trail on the map. You have to get into the trees and it's an AMAZING tree run then it makes sense as to why it's a black since you'll find completely different terrain from the flat and groomed portion you did. You have to wander to find the gold.
I've done Ore Bucket before, which I presume is what you're talking about but not sure. Definitely a great area! I actually had to re-record this run because the first time I lost the traverse and just ended up having fun in the woods below instead haha.
needs a foot of pow !
I did it last March. It’s a fantastic run.
This was the only run at Stratton I found to be a good challenge. Bumps the whole way down. World Cup and Upper Downeaster were way too short. Upper Spruce was groomed and was a great cruiser. None of the tree runs had good coverage when I was there, so I can't speak to them...
@@jasonpizzo2897 Some of the glades are actually quite nice! There’s challenge to be found in stuff like Squirrel’s Nest, Shred Wood Forest, etc. But yeah, overall I have to agree about most of the runs being a little short or flat.
Lotsa great cruising trails though.
Are the glades in good condition right now?
@@imanoobsoyeahanyways4996 I haven't been there in a while but with the recent storm, I would assume they're in good shape.
@@imanoobsoyeahanyways4996 One of my local friends sent me a photo yesterday, it all looks great!
Nice try diddy
Quite a cruiser there , nice and long not sure I remember that one will have to break out my old ski trail maps , the area that comes to mind is the Big Burn area.
Close! It runs under the lift of the same name, which is right next to Big Burn but ends up a little further down the mountain and to the East. Fantastic area, though I went on a day with pretty heavy powder so I'd love to come back when conditions are better!
Amazing what passes for a black diamond in southern VT. This would be a blue square further north. Easy to get over-confident on these and then find yourself in trouble at Sugarbush, MRG, Jay, etc... there's a world of difference between Freefall at Stratton and Freefall at Smugg's!
And some of the black diamonds up north would be blues in Colorado. Everything just needs a little perspective.
Point 'em downhill bub
Skied many years ago
Wouldd y’all say this is the easiest double black a sugarbush
Ripcord is probably easier if it's groomed.
@ thanks!
Going in march, looking to do my first DB
How bad is the beginning part compared to blacks
It's a little steeper than some of the neighboring runs under the chair. It's been over a year so I might not be remembering correctly, but as long as you're confident in your mogul abilities then you'll probably be fine
When I was in college, I used to storm chase Starr. Always had deep powder and with its excellent fall line and bumps, it was pure joy. One of the greatest runs at Stowe. Classic old style New England skiing.
Wish I could do this, I can barely get down national without breaking both my legs 😅
200 inches and it’s still icy and showing rocks and bare ground🙄…I know they get a lot more than anywhere else in NE, but they lie thru their teeth about how much they get 😂
They got it. They just get so much wind that it ends up in the woods. That’s why the Jay woods are the main attraction. The trails are not what you go to Jay for.
I don't think they lie. The terrain is really steep rocky. The wind scours the open faces. And snowboarders scrape the $hit out of the difficult terrain.
goat was definitely the most challenging in my day (I didn't do much glades and zero hike-to). mostly because of the narrowness of the trail for prolonged portions. the headwall portion of starr sticks out most memorably to me, but once you got through that short portion, it was more of a relaxed pitch mogul field that went on for quite a while. whereas goat felt like a lot more work to navigate your way down instead of having fun through the bumps. iunno. was 30 years ago, so...
I love Snowmass favorite mountain to ⛷️
biggest difference I notice between this and your footage from out west? not the snow/ice. not the length of run or treeline. not the pitch/angle. no no no. it's that in the east, PEOPLE USE THE SAFETY BAR. 😅
To me, Stowe is the best mountain in the east.
Aren't you supposed to shoot out of that chute part? Was that lower too icy?
Not sure if we’re thinking of the same area but I assume I was just taking the path of least resistance after that. I’m pretty sure either way would’ve been fine.
Jay peak is a dream resort of mine, I just started skiing this year and hard stuff like this looks sick. Unfortunately my state (PA) doesn’t have anything really like it. Been really working on improving my skills each time I go, carving, jump turns, side slipping etc. hoping to be able to ski some harder stuff next year if I really grind. Sweet footage!
If you just started skiing this year, you have no business skiing this kind of terrain you’re just gonna get yourself hurt and then they’ll have to rescue you
@ I didn’t say I was going to ski it yet, I said I’m learning how to
One of my favorite runs at Vail. Always good snow, always nice bumps!
Why is Cloud 9 a Blue?? Went there last week and felt kinda green compared to other blues.
My guess is it's a good way to deter beginners from getting ahead of themselves in an area with predominantly intermediate/advanced terrain. Also, it's not really a run they would want to advertise as beginner-friendly.
@@Bram4Real Got it. You are right. Actually, right after the short catwalk, right at the end, is a pretty steep slope for a beginner.
Excited to do drop into the den this season
You should try staircase glade. IMO it's about the same difficulty as face chutes, maybe even a little harder
I've done Everglade if that counts! Same stretch of trees, though I'm sure Staircase is harder than that from looking at satellite view. Will definitely be hitting that, Valhalla, and Kitz Woods when I go back.
@@Bram4Realit’s basically like a steeper deliverance
I would say my toxic trait is thinking I could do this but even my toxicity knows there is no way
It's so much steeper than it looks on the head cam
well this decidedly should not be open
I think the conditions were fine, definitely a little thin but not worth closing imo
@ dawg there were just rock hopping sections
Maybe I'm misinterpreting your comment here but I appreciate when resorts open stuff in crappy conditions for those willing to ski it. I give the older generations in this sport a lot of flak for some of their big talk around conditions and trail difficulty, but honestly I kind of agree with the old-school "ski it if you can" mentality that Killington employs when choosing to open trails (though Sugarbush is a better example). If people don't like the thin cover, there's plenty of other good stuff around the mountain. But rocks and dirt are par for the course this late in the season and I'd rather have this trail open and terrible than closed and terrible!
@ nah fair enough I’m definitely on the side of opening more stuff than less lol, I just haven’t seen cover this bad on a lot of trails(even unopened ones). I went to killington a couple weeks ago and coverage was better than this and still closed, think I might just be a little pressed about it! Vertigo headwall was open and in similar conditoon

This route is a subtle reference to the fact that on November 22nd, 1963, JFK had a highly secretive false assassination made against him during the motorcade in Dallas Texas, so that he could escape to Kokomo with collaborator and island-dweller Jimmy Buffett. This was so that he could escape the duties of president and ditch his uggo wife for hot island babes. This is also subtely referenced in his co-conspirators later released cover of the beach boy's song 'Kokomo', which was an attempt to uncover the plot to the public, as their relationship soured after JFK used his infamous charisma to steal away Buffett's hussies on the island now known as sandals cay.
I feel that snowboarders pain.
Everglades, more like foreverglade! Took me a good 15 mins to get down
is the 1 seater there fast?
No. But it’s famous and amazing. One of the last single chairs in America.
this low taper glade is MASSIVE
What does relative difficulty mean?
Just means compared to other stuff around the resort at the same rating, but it's usually just a guess.
That was pretty fun looking. All banks and switch back
It was pretty good but some of the flat sections were tough since conditions were pretty slow
conditions sure looked beautiful. where are all the bare spots??? 😀
