TRACK PLANS & WAGONS ! No track plan found in ANY model manufacturers book is realistic. They are all designed to encourage you to buy their track systems. For realistic track plans you need to get your hands on one or more of the many "Reference" books available such as "Great Western Railway track plans". There were at least four published by OPC (Oxford Publishing) from memory. Or Southern Railway, LMS railway etc. & written by various authors. Such books give scale plans of all types of real stations from branch line halts to major stations like Reading General or Cannon Street !!! They are available from the many second hand specialist Railway/Transport book shops. Or if recently published found in the Preserved steam Railway shops at places like Bridgnorth (SVR) or Bishops Lydeard (WSR), or indeed in Peco's own shop at Beer, Devon. Reference material for all sorts of Railway subjects is plentiful, once you find the regular sources, & many advertise in Railway Modeller, and they always prove a boon to those trying to build realistic model railways. NOTE: This sort of material WILL NOT be found on the internet, for legal copyright reasons. WAGONS... The complexities of operating wagons in the steam era is typified, if I tell you that the "Rule Book" on freight operation was hundreds of pages ! To start the ball rolling you need to know that BR painted "Fitted" wagons (those with vacuum train brakes) red oxide, and wagons with NO train brake, known as "unfitted" grey. This required the marshalling of freight trains as follows. Any red oxide painted wagon had to be coupled behind the locomotive so the loco could control the brakes in those wagons. Behind the "fitted" wagons would be any "Unfitted" grey wagons which had nothing but a hand parking brake. At the rear of course HAD to be a brake van. There were express freight trains consisting of ALL "fitted" wagons; Part fitted freight trains with both fitted & non fitted wagons, and "unfitted" freight trains (such as coal trains) which had no brakes. This later type was normally limited to 30mph, simply because the only brakes available were those on the engine, and those on the Guards van operated by the Guard. The next step in marshalling a freight was to identify the contents of each wagon. It's position in a freight was therefore also dependant on what it carried. For example you were not allowed to couple a Van full of Commercial explosives for the Mining Industry, next to a tank wagon carrying inflammable liquids. For obvious safety reasons ! Another important aspect of wagons in the BR steam era, are the markings on wagons. For example the diagonal white line seen on many of the mineral wagons at the beginning of your programme, indicates that end of the wagon, had an end door, allowing the wagon to be unloaded by tipping it on that end (in large machines designed for the purpose). Another BR wagon marking was 3 white vertical oblongs painted on all four corners of a wagon. This indicated the wagon was a "Shock" wagon intended for carrying fragile loads, and was NOT allowed to be "Hump shunted" (in Marshalling yards). There are plenty of "Reference" books around dealing with wagons both in the BR steam era, the "Big Four", and even Modern BR wagons. They are all extremely interesting, and really help with the operation of layouts !!!! Happy Modelling, From an ex BR Engineer.
As I lived in Whitehaven in the 1970's your layout has particular meaning and interest to me. Thank you for your videos. 😊
@@robertmatthews8302 Glad you enjoyed them and thanks for watching
Great video very informative some good ideas on your layout thank you for sharing very nice 👍
Thank you
It is satisfying to build from a kit!
It certainly is. Just need to remind myself of that sometimes when I get stuck with one.
@@neggypotterngaugemodelling2688 Quite! I built my first N gauge kit wihtin the last year or so - a BH Enterprises 2-EPB. It came out quite well in the end, and was most satisfying.
nice work I like it! are you getting a class 314 next?
Thank you. Yeah I've got one on order from Revolution Trains. Also tempted by the Class 318 kit also from N-Trains or/and Class 334 if the kit becomes available again.
Beautiful tank Neggy
@@Shelfandtabletoplayouts00gauge thank you. Just need to find some decals to finish it off.
Brilliant stuff!! I especially enjoyed seeing the 31, hauling the parcel / newspaper train. So unusual to see.
@@thecontractor365 really glad you enjoyed it. I think the 47s were more common on that working but 31s were used: flic.kr/p/9bHNcr
wow, thats some good sound there
Yeah it's pretty good. I've had a few from CR Signals and they've all been pretty awesome.
Im going there on sunday
@@KTTG395 hope you enjoy it. It looks great. I've only ever passed it on the train.
Very good grass work great video thanks for sharing 👍
No problem, glad you enjoyed it.
I really like this Neggy, the backscene I thought was pretty good. Love the overgrown points and track. Really more like 00 look than ‘N’. More to come soon I hope.
Thank you. I've decided to go with the photo backscene. I've removed about a few cms of the bottom and I think it looks the part and compliments the scene quite well.
Right back to the 70s and 80s, such a simple but effective through station. Nice shunting sidings, my kind of place 👍
Thank you!
Glad I found these videos. I lived about midday between St. Bees and Whitehaven from 1954 to '56 so was a frequent visitor. Can't comment on the authenticity of the station, unfortunately. I always want by bike (pedal.)
Glad you liked the videos. I've also done a Corkickle layout in modern image, my first layout was very loosely based on Bransty station and I'm currently working on a layout based on Preston Street goodsyard.
Modelling companies should consider making some Furness Railway locos. There are some genuinely beautiful designs from the FR, and they would look great if the right company made 00 models of them. It’s an untapped goldmine of potential.
Completely agreed. The India Red locos and Blue/White coaches are a great combination. Coppernob might be a good one start with. It's in the NRM in York so one more people will be aware off. Also quite a unique design with the lovely shiny copper firebox. Would love to see a Baltic tank as well. I've got a 3d kit but so far failed to get a chassis to fit.
Ballast looks very realistic and fine, love the interesting old stock.
Thank you. I used chinchilla sand instead of modelling ballast as I find its finer. Have had a few issues with it setting properly. Think it might need a bit more pva to the setting mix perhaps. There's a few bits in the video where you can see bits have come off and I'll need to redo it.
very good
Thank you
Superb, trees, buildings , bridges, scenics, stock. Must be your favourite 👍
Visually it's one of my favourites but I do get bored with the operation side quite quickly with it. It also take quite a while to set up as its over two boards which don't join easily as they're just old shelves and the backscene is two long rolled sheets which are a faff to set up. My thinking with this layout at the moment is to, ditch the wagon yard n bridge, and make a bigger representation of the station together with three through running lines. Reckon I could fit it on the same sized board as St Bees is on. Just don't have the space currently to store another big layout.
@@neggypotterngaugemodelling2688 funny how it’s such an effort to get it moving when once assembled it seems like a one piece on video. I really like it as it is 👍
I'm planning on a Queen St Station for my loft layout. I'd happily follow your build to see how it's done (as this would be my first build) Best of luck with it 😊
Thank you. It'll be a little while before I get started as I'm working on two other layouts at the moment but I'll share progress when there is some.
Glad to see what looks like paper and card buildings. I use Scalescenes and really like them.
Me too. I started out using Metcalfe buildings but migrated to making my own buildings using scalescenes texture prints and drawing up the designs in Inkscape. I got a lot the inspiration from this youtube.com/@Chandwell channel.
Brilliant video.
Thank you
Yeah, we got a lot of buffers, Senator. Thanks for the vid!
No worries! Thanks for watching.
Nailed it there Neggy, super work with the vegetation. Love the polybulk weathering. Might get my train set out later 👍👍👍
Thank you. Just a bit of white weathering powder I find gives a decent weathering effect.
Very nice video, looks 00 to me!
Thank you! Working on a few final touches to this layout at the moment when time allows.
good idea for a layout and i like the sound class 25
Thanks Tim. Had it sound fitted by dckits. Really pleased with it.
Wow, not letting the grass grow there Neggy. Looks great already. ATB
Cheers Darren!
Super session Neggy, nice blend of real and model, the noughties era works great. Enjoyed the DMU sounds and prototypical workings. ATB Darren 👍
Thanks Darren. It was a lot of fun and did get me thinking should I change the layout to reflect more modern times but I'm going to continue with the steam theme.
Asik
Cheers
where did you get a drs dbso
It was originally a Graham Farish ScotRail one that I reliveried into DRS colours. Got the decals from Railtec I think? Also removed the end door and replaced it with a piece of plasticard cut to fit and painted yellow.
Perhaps the most difficult thing with the smaller scales is getting the track to look prototypical, I think you always do a great job blending the ballast and rail colours. Lots of challenges with this layout, hard standing area looks good in the goods area and vegetation too. Nice to see the class 28 back on Cumbrian metals, ATB Darren 👍
Thanks Darren. It took a while to get the colour blend right but I think it was worth it. There's a good collection of photos of Class 28s in Cumbria here, showing prototypical train formations which I found really useful: cumbrianrailways.zenfolio.com/p34310085 Neggy
Thanks, there are some super pictures there, notably the colorised one and the last one with full yellow ends. A very iconic if flawed loco👍
Amazing session, great mix with the sleeper, Strathclyde PTE engineering, RHTT etc. Looking about finished now? Good atmosphere of the city 👍
Cheers Darren. Yeah just about complete. I've recently added a few more bits (extra backscene, platform seating, bus stop), not in this video. I'm leaving them in place for a bit to check I'm happy before gluing down and then I'll be calling it done. Will do another Build video a bit.
Big fan of your videos and this is excellent, have enjoyed seeing it progress. What do you use for the “off scene” sections - a loop, traverser or fiddle yard?
@@neggypotterngaugemodelling2688yes, a few details maybe the odd bit of vandalism???? I was in a housing estate behind Ibrox last year, must’ve been over a hundred shopping trolleys and a few foxes around too!
Thanks Simon. Really glad you enjoyed the videos. At each end of the layout is a short section of Kato track that I used to connect up to a fiddle yard. Currently I've got it set up so that each line is a continuous loop through the fiddle yard with each up/down line having two lines. I've also sometimes had it just as an end to end with a short fiddle yard when I've been doing other things on the table that the layout sits on at the same time.
Really good idea. I hadn't thought about that. Thank you. Might need some some graffiti as well.
Did you make the tank wagons
No they're all RTR from Graham Farish. PCA bulk powder tanks.
Very Glasgow like with the island platform and retaining walls, very impressive office buildings and scenics. Great update, thanks Darren 👋
Cheer Darren. Appreciate the feedback.
Looks 00 gauge to me…apart from the couplers. 92 looks good, the sound on the 60 is incredible. Love this layout, simple but captures the essence. It definitely provided me with the basis for my layout, thanks 👍
Thank you so much for the kind comments. Really like the sound fitted locos. Adds a lot more to the atmosphere of the layout.
Been admiring your Preston Dock layout videos. Really nicely put together with great detail. You've got some awesome sound fitted locos as well.
@@neggypotterngaugemodelling2688I prefer yours 👍
Hi Neggy. You seem to have quite a few layouts to your name. Are they individual or modules to each other? What is your favoured method of controlling your locos (make and model of controller)?
Yeah. Haven't got the space for one big layout so make do with lots of small ones! They're individual although some can be connected together using Kato track. These have Kato track connectors for the fiddle yards. I've haven't gone for a modular system. For Hardendale and the next few they're on the same Scalemodelscenery baseboard for which I plan to use the same fiddle yard. I use dcc for any loco Post 1970/BR Blue and I use an NCE Powercab. Anything before is dc/analogue controlled by Gaugemaster controllers (have a GMC-Combi & P contoller with simulation). Would like dcc for all really but that would be a very tricky conversion for the older steam stock I've got.
Sweet!
Thanks!
Good update, I like the polyfiller mwthod. Usually I use that or plaster mixedxwith paint and sone PVA. The latter to slightly reduce the brittleness and maje it less like a water sponge abd the paint to..wrll, paint. It also helps hide a crack if it happens as there isn't a bright white line then. Always found the skimming pricess very difficult to get a truly uniform top though. Maybe I need more skill. Usually ends up with several skims and lung alarming sanding sessions.
Thank you. I might try that in the future. The skimming went ok this time although I did struggle the first few times I did it.
@@neggypotterngaugemodelling2688 - Forgive my typos, touchscreens are a bane
Do you never stop modelling 😃 Thanks for the run through, you’ve really given me inspiration to keep messing about with my layouts despite being busy. It’s great to have a hobby like this when the weather isn’t the best. I had to get some catenary posts after seeing your Hardendale rebuild. Have a great year, all the best Darren
Cheers Darren. I wiill keep going until I run out of room to store them I think!
Packed full of atmosphere and detail, love the dunes at the front. I made something similar (but nowhere near as good) in about 2008. Lovely relaxing session with sounds to match👍
Thank you!
It’s going to be a good scene!👍
Thanks. I'm really pleased how it's coming along.
Superb
Thanks. Think this was my first 3D printed kit.
Hi beautiful train. Can you tell me where you found the locomotive?
Thank you. It's a Dapol Class 73 (Dapol ND021b) with Caledonian Sleeper transfers from Electra Rail. It doesn't look like they do the transfers anymore unfortunately but they're just starting up again so might become available again in the near future. electrarail.co.uk/class-739-1695-p.asp
I love seeing people appreciate the work of N scale modelers; more specifically N gauge in itself. You definitely deserved for attention and subscribers!
Thank you for the kind comments!
Love the models abd the layout
Thank you. They were a lot of run to make!
Looks really good, well done
Thank you!
Fantastic atmosphere on such a simple track plan. Wonderful vegetation like mid summer and the overgrown end of the platform with enveloped electrical boxes. A fine line to model, hope you get subs and views by the thousand, definitely one of my favourite channels 👍 Darren
Thank you so much Darren. I think this was my first real go at playing around with different types of vegetation and it was a lot of fun experimenting. The algorithm doesn't seem to be being all that kind at the moment with views but comments like yours and others makes up for it!
