Galway to Ballinasloe by train 2002
Переглядів 465Рік тому
A railway journey i filmed from Galway City to Ballinasloe on a MK2 intercity train. Train pass's through Athenry and Woodlawn. This was a time of great change for Irish Rail and the staff. It was just before all the signal cabins became automated and made the job of the Signal man redundant. Railway gates were no longer opened manually by gate keepers. It was also around the time that all the ...

Really cool. But it doesn’t look like it would keep an invader out? Was that not the purpose of the earthen wall?
@@LisaG442 well at the time there would have being ring of Ash poles driven into the ground around the earth mound with the tops pointed, probably around 10feet above earth mound.
@@paulkelly4839 Ahh ok, that makes sense, thanks!

Do u have to buy this land to be allowed to cut turf out of it?
Yes. You can pay someone to cut it for you with a machine or you can cut it yourself.
There's my friend Cormac Murphy and his father Tom Murphy
My friend Patrick was in it😂❤
Great to see its still going strong after all these years. Went there in 1989,and was a good event. Keep it going. 🍀🍀👌🍀🍀
How beautiful they must have been cosy
I'm a direct descendant of John Day of the Bridge and Lake (town) in Oregon state. our family extended from Deaghaid which I believe is the same as O'Dea. we've been in this country since early 1600s (USA) and a former Fort was also named after him. the town of Doyletown PA was built on Christopher Day's property which was the grandfather (My 14th Great) of John Day i mentioned. it was a graveyard given to the people who couldn't afford to bury family in the 17th and 18th century before Doyle claimed it after the Revolutionary war under new laws. This John Day might be related as a distant cousin. its nice what he did. the Irish people may not like it though. LOL
I love ahascra
This is the most immaculate thing I’ve seen this year, an maith lmao
My grandmother was from Ahascragh. Mary Lyons , born April 1908. Parents Margeret Lyons & John Donoghue
Hello Thomas, I cant see any record of them in the 1901 or 1911 census. In Ahascragh.
Hi Paul, sorry I forgot to mention they originally were from Ballinasloe. Later moved to Ahascragh. Hope you're well
@@thomasscott619 O right, that would add up. Wasnt many Lyons familys in Ahascragh. Just two or three around Ervellagh and Coole.

I love seeing the ancient forts of Ireland! This is beautiful and very informative. Thanks for sharing! ~Janet in Canada
Your welcome Janet, thanks for the positive comment.
Hi, you don’t by any chance have any footage from the steam parade that year do you?
Thank you great to see this, my uncle Martin Brien ( from Kilcrin) is buried here, but we never did find a stone. Died as a young boy in about 1940. I saw the headstone for Connolly....I remember my mum telling me all about her days at Eglish NS. Walking to school barefoot and carrying in turf for the school fire 🔥.
fair play Julie yiu know i was rared in the same house in zkilcrin we had it from around 1958. . Connolly was a strict teacher my father often told me about his days with him. they be shaking in there boots going to school.
Wow! Do you mean you took over the house after the Briens? My grandad died in 1958 ish so it fits. I remember going back to the house mid sixties with my mum and aunt who been born there , Mr Kelly was leaning on the gate chatting to us...there was a photo of him and my mum and aunt....haven't seen it for years. I've got a few photos taken in the garden of that house in about 1932 with the Briens....no idea who had a camera, but the photos are great.
@@juliedaly2058 Well that would have been my father Tom Kelly leaning on the gate. Would appreciate a copy of the pictures taken in 1932 that would be amazing to see. My email is eastgalway1916@gmail.com
Hello and no problem I'll email them over ....probably in about a week.

First in your face baby have a blessed day 👍☘
I wish I could of seen them inside
I know how ya feel often think the same when looking at an old Fort in a field. Thanks April.
West Clare on d loop head peninsula seems to have the highest concentration of ring Forts in the country
Why is that
I just sent this to a friend in Vermont to demonstrate how we Irish are so lovable. It's because, though we might be short on education, we are lions of laughter.
the Irish OECD score is the highest in Europe and 4th in the world...?
For GOD so loved the world that he gave his ONLY begotten son to die for our sins whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life! Lean on Jesus in these trying times!
Thanks for video 💓🌹😁💗💜😁🌹🌹💗🌹🌹
Lovely production Paul. There's a terrific stone fort just outside Caherciveen, if you don't already know it. It has a souterrain from the centre of the fort leading to a sallyport built into the wall. I suppose it would hold maybe 10 men. To protect from any incursion through the souterrain it is constructed in a way that forces you to be in a totally undefendable position when you are re-entering, with the head totally exposed and the arms useless. An ingenious bit of engineering skill.
Thanks Anthony didnt know it. must check that out over the summer.
lol its an iron age ringed enclosure. Many of them were for holding animals too. And the recreations are small late iron age with the stone work.
Thank you so much for this video! It made my heart and soul sing, and when the music started, it made me weep with happiness. My thoughts kept going back to how wonderful a small homesite one of those would be....... Much love from Oklahoma, US.
Thanks Karen, happy Easter.
@@paulkelly4839 Happy Easter!
Thank you for this beautiful video, Paul. I love the music, too. Many thanks and best wishes for your journey!
WHO'S AUDASITY WAS THAT TO PUT JOHN O'DAY'S NAME ON MY CASTLE? EVEN IF HE COVERED MY LANDMARK COSTS WHILE I WAS IN TRAINING, IT WOULD NOT BE APROPRIATE. SHOULD I PUT MY NAME ON THE LANDMARKS I PROTECT EVEN WHEN I HAVE BEEN REMBURSED?
