Blister bike editors, Simon Stewart and Dylan Wood, have been logging a whole lot of miles on two of those bikes, the Cannondale Scalpel and Yeti ASR, to not only see how they compare to each other, but also how practical they are for riders who are *not* racing against the clock. Ski Touring & Backcountry Gear: The Basics & What You Need to Know
cat vision Goggles and "Team SKI Bladezz!" Blazers
I've had Ravens, Hojis and 4 pairs of Renegades (...and currently hoarding a few of the old 196cm size). Love them. I'm basically the exact opposite size & shape from Hoji and they still work.
Skiguide, used GFT and Freeride. Freeride was satisfying for 2 seasons. GFT sucked different. Pouch broke after about 10 days of use so i couldnt Return them. The were worn out after 2seasons of touring and guiding and overall the impression was not really good. Tried to communicate with the company but they were not really interested in feedback. For sure a good boot when everything works out fine but durability is not what the state the liner is
Harald, so glad to see you commenting here as well and continuing to engage with ZipFit content. We've received your feedback at every juncture and again, we apologize that you had a challenging experience at the shop you purchased your ZipFits through. Happy New Year.
To clarify some things, I have purchased the freeride after the GFT broke down as an additional Line in my fleet and I am happy with the boot. It's everything I expected. That doesn't Change the fact that the pocket with the omfit cork broke and ergo is useless on a Fitting point of view. Which made the inner material break too immediately afterwards. This all Happening after a few days of skiing was not a nice experience when you pay that amount of money for a liner. In addition to that - I recommend zip fits to all my clients with difficult feet and overall recommend Your liners before paying the same amount of money for a Standard boot fitting procedure. At least 10 of my clients use them and most are super happy. I will also try the new and updated GFT on my new scarpa QuPro when the Intuition liner is off (which is pretty soon😅) So to all people. When the liner works (and not fail super early due to manufacturing /material error) it's probably the best gear you can have And personally. I look forward to a more skimp Version too. So just be happy that you make a good product in 99% but your insurance should cope with the failed ones. The shop I bought them is no fault. Probably one of the best boot fitter in the Alps.
@@HaraldLangreiter Thanks for the clarification Harald. Once again we are here to listen to your feedback. Happy to hear you out anytime, as we mentioned in our 8 different back and forth correspondences and numerous attempts to connect with you on the phone. I only mentioned the shop based on your review that you left on our site that states the following: "The shop i bought would not take them back because obviously I used them a lot during the fitting process. That said - with a bit luck I get two good boots instead of one broken the next time I consider buying liners." We would never sell a liner that has a 100g discrepancy between one and the other and that is something a shop would certainly catch. Again, we are available to talk whenever you would like as we try to engage with all of our skiers and we take feedback honestly and seriously.
He told me he is not selling out when he was literally selling the company. I will be surprised if Revel is around for many more years. All the OG staff are gone. Who is designing the bikes from now on?
with narrow boots & feetthis is so hard😂
Guys don't mount them -6 from true center. Perfect spot for Nomad 94mm & 100mm is -2.5 -3cm from true center.
I love my Blaze 86, and most recently 106, both so fun and versatile.
may I ask why do you love it? the price, performance or something?
Do you immediately add your zipfit to a new shell or are you waiting to pack out your stock liner before molding your zipfit?
All the XC/roadies getting burrhurt in the comments 😂
Yeah the fanny pack, glogles, and elbow pads really give you trail cred 😂
Wish the Workhorse leather was used on all the liner.
Don’t forget to mention the most important component of using zip fits, and that is a heated boot bag. I plug my boot bag the night before skiing, lowest setting. I then plug in when I get in my car, headed to the mountains. I leave the liner in the shell, Use a boot horn to slide down into my boots. Mine are over 10 years old, along with my Fischer RC4 130’s. Over 500 full days. Shells need replaced, one of these days….not the zip fits. They will go into my next pair of RC4’s, when I have the money. The heated cork means I get a custom fit every time I put them on. The laceups give you the precise fit you want. The shell buckles simply snug up against the liners. Lastly, I threw out the stock power straps, and installed Booster straps. Of yes, my footbeds were fabricated by Chuck at Racers Edge in Breckenridge. I have lousy, flat feet, and all of the above mentioned gives me the ultimate in performance from first to last chair at 4pm. Remember, the ultimate fit with zip fits come with using the heated boot bag. Every morning, I get a custom molded liner fit, as the cork is viscous when gently heated. Zip Fits are the best kept secret in skiing. I am entering my 63rd year skiing, and Zip Fit liners are a given!
Nothing like shaming all us Lycra guys in the first minute. Wtf is wrong with you
I’ve had 4 pairs of renegades over the years and still have 2 pairs of them. Such a great ski for Alaska
Amazing interview, always great to hear when people are passionate about something and Janusz is definitely passionate about skis, I've heard really good things about Majesty skis and im looking to buy something from their lineup this season!
Thank you so much for making this educational video! I ride Snowfeet 38cm skiskates and I tried 65cm Stalmach XR9's yesterday that are much faster than skiskates. I have to practice carving and riding the edges like you pros do.
can i use it for freestyle
That Mata .. sounds very close to a Morris Cor copy ... Interesting!
My god, nothing is more annoying than watching some guy try and clearly pander to some women’s rights bullshit. They make a women’s ski because they want women to like the top graphic more than the men’s top graphic so they can sell more skis to women. It’s not about celebrating women. What bullshit!
Was that Scalpel set up with the factory amount of spacers? That stem looks way lower than mine did when I got it. If anything I found the factory stack of the Scalpel to be quite high, but I've kept it as is and it feels perfect now.
Get some APEX Boots !!
Ew
Dear Volkl, please make me a new Gotama, Danke 🤣 - The way that ski can spray soft snow on the people behind has never been equalled 🤣
Once wet, always wet
Haha true
Easily the best $400 I’ve ever spent on a piece of ski gear. Elevated my skiing exponentially.
$550 for me for gft. love my zips, use them in both in and out of bounds boots. i mean if they were cheaper i'd have two pairs.
What if you’re a woman what size 5 feet sometimes I have to buy it in the children’s department because my feet are small❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The guy needs to stop with the “Aaa”, “Aaa”…..
Bought one of the LiTRIC airbags after demoing it at the summit!
Would a Large Moterra SL fit a 6’2 person? XL seems way out of bounds for me, especially wheelbase and reach. Even seat tube and 490 is very high
Great video guys. Quality discussion that has me wanting both bikes!!
Get a good hard tail … 27.5 are crazy fun
Terrible video. Why ride an XC bike with long pants and all the rodeo clown getup??? Freaking elbow and knee pads…? Those are for pussies…WTH?
Nice video Great trail for the review!!
Underselling the DW as usual.... And no comparison of the DW to the Countach? Also, @Moment, please make a 195cm DW & DW104 , please
East Coast Rider with a hard tail on undulating, flowy trails. Want to upgrade to FS bike. Leaning towards trail bike category, not these bikes. Ibis Ripley, Santa Cruz, Pivot Switchblade, Revel Rascal are on my list. Great video and would love to see something similar comparing the bikes I mentioned. This video convinced me these are not my best option.
For what its worth I'm up in the NE and actually moved from a Pivot Swithblade to a Cannondale Scalpel 2. Loved the Swithblade but for most of the trails in NJ, NY, PA I've found the Cannondale to be more than up to the challenge. Don't get me wrong - the Switchblade is brilliant but its more a monster truck (of a trail bike). The 120/120 seems like a sweet spot. Rarely bottom out on the Cannondale and with a change in rubber found it tackles everything from technical climbs to desents. Looks its not a "heavy" trail bike so don't expect the same plushness you're going to get with a 140/160 bike but what I (and many of my friends) found.. is less travel is actually more fun. Now I'm I going to Creek with the Cannondale -- NO; but can I have crazy fun on it.. yes!
Guys,a 2,500 dollar price difference is not close. Take the 2500 dollars , upgrade the norco part spec. Suspension and brakes and then you can call it a comparison. Apples to apples men.
I am with you. 2500 would make a hell of difference on the spec
I bet if the Scalpel had a 5-10 mm higher riser bar, it would put you in a better descending position with the head angle up and a little les weight on the bars-- ie. trail geo. I wouldn't spend the extra $ on the Yeti, when both bikes are so good. Nice riding, vid, and production. I have a 2023 Rocky Instinct carbon. These bikes are a little under-gunned for what I usually ride, and I don't have long mountain climbs where I live... Short extremely steep climbs and drops/slabs/rocks/roots mixed in on short descents. I don't have the terrain for an Enduro bike and the trails are sort of slow tech and rugged, so an XC bike is not ideal. The modern trail bike is perfect for where I ride.
I have a 2024 Scalpel and I'm pretty sure that whoever set up the one they reviewed cut the head tube way lower than factory. Normally it has about 20mm of spacers underneath the stem and that one looks like it barely has any. I find the position on mine to be extremely comfortable and closer to a trail bike than anything I've owned previously, which makes for a very confident descender.
I started mtb in old school geometry, but recently purchased a preloved scalpel ultimalte. I wanted to try a modern xc. Old school geometry suits me better for going up technical terrain: steeper head tube angle/shorter wheelbase. For the same reasons, the modern xc is more capable for going downhill.
Great review. How does these type of new XC bikes compare to a Trek Top Fuel (Gen 3 or 4)?
Quite a bit different . Top Fuel is basically a trail bike (especially if spec’d with the 130mm fork). Descends much better, feels more stable etc, higher stack. XC (like the super cal, even gen 2), has much sharper steering, front is weighted much more , need to stay seated during climbs or can spin out. I ride both and prefer the supercal until I start to get beat up by rougher stuff.
We've got this direct comparison included in our Deep Dive of the Yeti ASR: blisterreview.com/deep-dive/deep-dive-mountain-bike/deep-dive-yeti-asr
Great review. any thoughts on the revel ranger and how it would compare to the ASR
We've got this direct comparison included in our Deep Dive of the Yeti ASR: blisterreview.com/deep-dive/deep-dive-mountain-bike/deep-dive-yeti-asr
A real quality product. Walk around in a size 10 shoe and in between sizes with ski boots so I go smaller...307 shell in a Dalbello Krypton w/ Intuition wrap. Tried on the Gara HV at a shop in NY. If there was a little space in front of my big toe you would have had another customer.
you could try a size down for the liner. the neoprene toe box stretches, it might be enough to make it thinner where you need it
@Tanner731 I tried both sizes. Too much bunching in the size up and my toe touched the front in the other. I need a small amount of space
@@jimroberts6176 I said a size down to stretch the neoprene thinner
Great discussion/video. I have a Scott Spark RC and I can very much relate to your comments on the two bikes. I have also found that getting the rebound settings right on both shock and fork can make a big difference in this type of bike (without being too anal). I switched the Twinlock remote over to the Rockshox Twistlock (both 3P) for the reasons that you mentioned and swapped the Transfer SL for a Bikeyoke Divine SL again for the rationale that you discussed. Thanks.
Is not a scalpel if is missing a lefty ocho
You guys made me feel bad. I do ride xc with tight clothes on. 😂 At the end I don't see anything wrong with it 😂
To each their own! ;)
Lol, I turned it off and gave thumbs down when made fun of wearing XC clothing.
exactly why you guys get made fun of
I’m mature enough to realize I look like a goober in XC/roadie gear while not caring about what others think because it’s extremely comfortable and functional for the intended purpose.
It has become the same old joke your old ass uncle tells you every time he shows up for a family event.
duas máquinas!
On any given ride way more time is spent climbing than descending. So makes sense to optimize climbing.
Very well done! As always
Sniper T has been doing this for years. Had it regret selling it
Thanks guys. Cool video. Going downhill on most any bike is a lot of fun. Climbing on the other hand can be fun, or not fun at all, depending on the bike. Since we spend most of our time on a bike not going downhill a better climbing bike will give you more smiles per mile. I still love my downhill bike for lift assist but for anything else I will take a relatively light trail bike with fast rubber.
