Construction Lines 0.9.3 Release features, updates and bug fixes - Accurate CAD Modelling for Blender.
you just killed sketchup soo cool
Gooood! A big bravo
My short cut for construction lines is D for Draw. And my Shortcut for Draw line is also D. So I double Tab D and am ready to go. ESC I put to Exit CL, because to deselct a tool i just hit S. Best regards.
Construction lines. Well, just bought the plugin and gave it a try. I am a former Autocad/Fusion 360/Rhino modeler but now I make everything in Blender. Sometimes I miss CAD features, tried Cad Transform tools (they do not support Blender 4.x) but don’t find them intuitive and prefer to use Blender 4.X much better snaps with “B-shortcut” points. Construction lines - sometimes they are vital, and I used to create them from objects and through in some “Helper collections”. The plugin is great but lacks some features. I hope the author can read through and implement some of these. 1. Window/Crossing selection tool - that great! I cannot understand why for these years of Blender existence this left/right window selection tool is not available! Even 3D max has it! Not speaking about CAD apps. SO many posts about it in the Blender feature wish list but still none. So I applause for this feature! 2. When adding a circle and make it smoother with Ctrl+mouse wheel, it would be really nice to see the vertex count. It is Blender after all, so I always need to bear in mind vertex count for topology matter. 3. There is no Snap to origin and snap to face center. I would say it is a huge dealbreaker for me. In 80% of cases I snap the centers of objects, its origins. And you have neither snap to origin, nor snap to a face. That’s really bad. As I remember well Cad Transform has these snaps. They are must have! 4. The plugin doesn’t snap to generate modifiers, for example solidify. I use in 90% this modifier, but with your plugin cannot snap to generated geometry, only to the origin. Again, that’s a dealbreaker! Blender snaps perfectly to generated geometry (solidify modifier). 5. Add mid mouse drag sideways to lock the axis as in Blender standards, it is much quicker and mor intuitive then pressing the X,Y,Z axis. 6. In move + divide, instead of /3, make it ctrl+scroll mouse wheel to add copies, so you can intuitively see if you are enough of the copies or need some more. Hard Ops/Box cutter have such an enhanced Array modifier. And make it as an option to create an Array modifier after adding these duplicates. It is always neater and cleaner to make the copies as an editable modifier, rather than making as real copies/duplicates. But not always, so as an option. 7. Extrude for making holes - awesome but… It will reset ALL the transformation (scale, rotation, location). So if I have a rotated 15 grad cube (so in transformation section it is 15 grad Z-rotated for example), and after I cut out the hole with your “extrude” it will reset the rotation transformation! So I will need to rotate the cube back 15 grad, so it is parallel to world axis, apply Rotation, and rotate it back. Now the transformation is back to 15 grad and you gismo box correct relative the rotated cube, and not parallel to the word axis as it was after the extrude. Please fix it! It should not reset the object transformations! Now it is a pain in the nack. 8. Make it possible to edit the length of the line, just selecting the pivot point and set a new length. For example I made the line 2051.121432543 - I want it to be exactly 2000! With the length I made it, it is pretty hard to move the empty point to make it exact 2000. Box cutter/Hard Ops has the similar feature, called “Set edge length”. Makes exactly what I wrote. 9. Make angle snaps - 15, 30, 45. So I want to draw a line for example at 45 grad without making it at first straight, then rotating. 10. Grid Sub Div - works only on an upper grid, for subdiv (when you zoom in), and sub-sub div grids it doesn’t snap. 11. Clean overlaps (when drawing one rectangular over the other). Not sure if it was possible but was nice as an option. 12. Origin point always stay in 3D cursor, not in the geometry center as would be logical! You need to always reposition it, otherwise you cannot scale normally (while it scales relatively from the origin point by default). 13. Juts t small question about modeling a bookcase. Why did you calculate the distance between vertical bookcase spacers, when you could just duplicate the left one to the right and then divide it by the number of these spacers to be set in between?
Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Most of these are on my dev list and I'll add those that aren't. I'm close to releasing the next version which includes Origin and face centre snaps, Grid sub-divs when zoomed in issue is fixed and I've also added multi-face extrude. With the vertex count on circle smoothing, the top bar shows the number of segments but I can add a vertex count also, if that's useful.
@@dannorris1406 Thank you! Will be looking forward to the new update! Good luck!
Some update. I've download the new version and try to implement it into my workflow. I'm struggling with the further issues. I made 4 construction lines to cut out an rectangular oppening in the object. But once I go into edit object mode and try to sketch a rectangle with the snaps on the intersection of 4 lines I fail. The first instrsection snaps, but then when I hover my mouse pointer to the other point, once it snaps I get not the rectangular but the diagonal line (so there is some width but 0 heigh of the rectangular). If I go a bit further, so the pointer doesnt snap to the instersectio, than all good, I get the rectangular, not a line.
@@vavalexus Can you email a copy of the blend file and I'll take a look to see what's going on. My contact form is on my website. Thanks
how do i change the measure value of an existing guide?
Yes! Where has this add-on been my whole Blender life. Thank you so much for your work on this. I hope this eliminates pain points I’ve had every time I have to switch over to modeling in Blender. I’m not sure I’ll use anything but Sketchup for architectural and cabinetry work, simply because SU was built with accuracy and speed in mind, and because you can move from concept to construction documents with relative ease. But I do use Blender for some product concepts when curves and bevels are needed. But with your tweaks to its modeling toolset I may consider Blender for a few more projects I’d typically just do in SU. I am curious though, is there a reason you’re using Blender for this type of visualization rather than just staying in Sketchup and then rendering in VRay?
Thanks for the comment! My pleasure. I find SU gets incredibly slow with larger models. Any complex shapes, fabrics, high-poly hard surfaces, etc. just become unusable. I find Cycles excellent as a renderer and have produced much better results than VRay in SU. The more I use Blender the more I realise that SU is so far behind. I'm not knocking SU at all, it's built for a different purpose but being able to work with cloth, physics simulations, node geometry, animation, split-views, real-time rendering, easy scripting & curves just put Blender into a different league. Plus, I really don't like the subscription model for SU. I was happy paying for perpetual licenses but tying into a subscription doesn't sit well with me. My plan is to move fully to Blender for all my work, however, the inability to produce documents is a real issue. This is the next add-on I'm currently working on and I'm hoping to get some demos out this year for testing. If everything works as planned, I'd like to move over fully to Blender next year.
@@dndrawings Really appreciate you sharing your experience with both processes. I’ve been using Blender increasingly more, and really love the texturing and rendering freedom I get in blender. I can use pbr’s or create my own procedural textures. I have a project coming up that requires rendering models I’ve created in SU and so I’m considering my options for what I do with these to create more realistic scenes. VRay or a real time rendering in an app like D5 seed like an obvious choice, but I already know Blender and so I’m starting to consider just using that instead. If your construction docs add on for blender is as well considered as construction lines, I’d definitely use it. Best of luck with the dev on that.
@@kevinmanley5043 If you've already built your models in SU, you can export them as .dae to Blender. I have a free add-on called DAEClean on GitHub which you can use to clean up the imported dae models. There's a link on my website if you're interested.
I have waited for a tool like this for many many years now!!! Thank you so much for this amazing asset! My 3ds Max Spline heart can RIP now... Also getting Level Editor vibes like Ultimate Doom Builder really love it! <3 🔥
i'm using CL 0.9.691. and it can't extrude all faces at the same time. is it bug?
The extrude functions were completely rewritten for version 0.9.66, and multi-face extrusion wasn't possible. However, I've just completed work on reintroducing it, and the next CL will be released very soon (it's currently in testing).
Great, thanks for the video
My God.... I just wanted to say, I'm that guy who really doesn't even agree with paying addons in a free program. But this is absolutely a take-my-money situation, as someone who has had to drop sketchup over time due to its trimble sale, becoming a webapp, moving to newer OSs, etc. Please, though, promise me to always keep this compatible with the latest versions of Blender, or to donate it to the Blender Foundation in the event that you become unable to maintain it.
Thanks for this! I use Construction Lines for my own work and always keep up with the latest Blender versions. It sometimes takes a little time to test for each release but I update as soon as I can. I've a new release coming out soon which includes multi-face extrude.
Doesn't seem to be working on Blender 4+
I just emailed you about this. You may need to update your version of Construction Lines to the latest version.
@@dndrawings my bad. I've uninstalled some add-ons (possible conflict with the Sketcher add-on ?), re-installed and now it is working. Thank you very much !
You are an absolute ANGEL, thank you! Absolutely worth the money for an extension that just works right out of the metaphorical box :D
I tested a different tool with similar if not the same goal, couldn't figure out the rotation I wanted for half a day. Tested this instead and decided it was worth the price in under a minute. Good Job.
Question to Dan: Could one use this tool to design an interior and render result onto Blender's timeline with alternating cam angles, zoom ins and outs? (Forgive me, not well experienced with Blender yet, but it seems a pretty powerful app).
praise the lord
That cliping camera and wall trick is magic tip, didn't know this till now. Thank you.
terrible murmuring and high pitch noise in the background amplified with lips smacking. No recording of the keys being pressed and erratic long presentation.
46:03 how do you place books with gravity? is it an addon?
If you set face geometry snapping, in the top bar of the viewport, you can hold Ctrl whilst dragging an object and it will snap to faces.
@@dndrawings thank you!
i would Kill for a guide, to transfer egger laminate sheet textures into blender, this guide is amaizing, and yes please. please please please make a guide on rendering. =]
Good will bless you for everything
I got problem extruding two windows or more in one wall. Wall geometry brakes down when making more than one opening for window. HEEEEEELP !!!!!
Are you using the latest version of CL 0.9.691? If you are and this is still happening can you contact me through my website form. Thanks
Thank you! You explain very well and I learned a lot!
Looks like the default Blender abilities but rewritten from verb input system to noun input system, to fit only simple usecases.
Hi, why is there no perpendicular snapping?
The line will highlight pink when it's being dragged perpendicular to an edge. Press Ctrl+Shift to lock the direction (same again to unlock)
@@dndrawings Thanks for responding. I use Construction Lines 2.93 in Blender 4.0, all default snaps are on, but perpendicular shaping doesn't work in both edit and object modes.

@@dndrawings OK, thanks
Does anyone know why the extrude function takes off the entire back side of the cube when you extrude through it? Is there something I m doing wrong? I just bought it, so I am a newbie.😊
You're not doing anything wrong. This is a known bug (regressive) and has now been fixed. I'm testing at the moment and will be putting out a fix release soon.
Fantastic! It`s game changer for me, as theatre designer! Thank you.

great addon but what if i wanna export a blue print with dimensions? is that possible???
Thanks. It's not possible with Construction Lines but I'm currently working on a new add-on that is designed to do this. I'll post a video here once I have a working version.
finally....
i just bought it. is it possible to change the keyboard shortcut natively in blender "keymap" section? i use the industrial standard for view rotation and zoom etc (caming from maya), but with alt right mouse button the construction menu is opening. i guess its internally set to "right mouse release" no matter if you use alt or shift etc. generally i m heavily using the keymap. differentiate click, click-drag, and press options. if its not natively in the blender keymap section, is there at least a complicated workaround to adjust the shortcut in more complex way?
You can change most of the keyboard shortcuts in Construction Lines preferences (Edit->Preferences->Add-ons->Construction Lines) however, right-click is hard coded to the context menu. It's a preference I'll add in for the next version but If this proves to be a real issue for you now, contact me through my website (dndrawings.com) and I'll build a temporary version for you which works around the issue.
You are amazinggggggggg
I wanna cry, this is everything I've needed. Especially because I'm moving from Sketchup to Blender
Well done....👏👏👏how odd that Blender doesn't have a line tool
how can i delete dimention line ?.
You can use the select tool to select guides and then press 'X' to delete. You can also use the context menu you delete all of them.
First I want to thank you for developing a really great add-on. I have learned to use Sketchup in Windows for a lot of my 3D printer modeling. But I don't like Windows & have upgraded to Linux Mint DE. Of course Sketchup doesn't function in Linux so I've had to stick with Windows to do my modeling by dual booting my computer. I've been learning Blender & have been trying to figure out how to do things that I could do in Sketchup. Then I found your add-on & had to have it. It makes it so much easier to use Blender for 3d printer modeling. Your add-on is definitely a must have for Blender. Thank you.
Thanks very much for your comment. I'm really pleased to hear that Construction Lines is proving useful for you. I'm working hard on my other add-on for producing scaled drawings, then I'd love to switch to Linux too!
incredible! thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this tool! I do woodworking and have used sketchup for years. I learned blender a few years ago, and missed the CAD elements for drawing layouts in the way I was used to in Sketchup. This add on is a huge help for me in my work - Thank you!
Great tool. After configuring it I tried to follow the given tutorial and lost some hours trying to figure out what went wrong with my setup. In the end I found it - I had set up Blender with millimeter precision. The room here is 5000x4000mm, my horizontal guide length was set to 1.0 so every line it created as a parallel construction line was so miniscule I couldn't see it. Maybe this is something for the FAQ or the manual (which I DID read 🙂).
Thanks for highlighting this. I'll put it in the FAQ section.
Although I am reasonably proficient with Sketchup, Blender was a whole new experience for me. After checking out Blender a couple of years ago I put it all on hold. I found the most irritating feature to be the preference for using hot keys in most tutorials instead of the built-in toolsets. You can learn to use built-in tools using trial and error, but that doesn't really apply to hot keys!
is there a way for grid snapping to work in 3d mode?
I'm working on this at the moment
@@dndrawings oh I see, thank you! Also please don't mind the message I sent through your website
I can see some cool SketchUp features are implemented here. Nice!
Quick tip. Watch in 1.25 speed 😆
hello we seem to have issue with size input values for 1000mm rectangle it is putting 1mm for some reason please advise ? also how to snap to grid.. TIA
Have you set your unit scale to something other than 1.0? If so, you can either change it to 1.0 or if you require it to be at a particular scale there is an "Override Unit Scale" in the add-no preferences under Construction Lines.
1# OMG, this is so frustrating, Selecting, is a nightmare in or out of edit mode. #2 Numpad will only be a nav, NO input values regardless of Enter or NumLock toggle or Pref Direct Input/Numpad For Nav. #3 X (delete) will not fully delete. #4 move anything in smaller scales is jumpy regardless of Unit setup. # I want to like this, but OMFG is this frustrating.
Sounds like there might be a conflict going on. Do you have any other 3rd-party add-ons running?
I so don't understand the entering values.
It may be that you are using the number pad to enter values. If so, you will need to press Enter before entering a value. This is to allow for the numpad to be used for navigation during operations. Using the number row doesn't require you to press Enter first. This behaviour can be changed in the add-on preferences.
After you have drawn reference lines (using the Tape command) how can you delete some of those lines?
You can use the select tool and then press 'X' to delete selected guides or you can right click and hit Remove All to remove all the guides.
How to edit lenth of single line? there no info in Item
I bought and installed your addon for blender 3.4 then 3.6 but wanting to stay current with blender 4.0 and I see from your website that it's not there yet. Looking forward to the update since something seems to be broke (for lack of a better word) Thanks again for having a great alternative to sketchup
Hi Wayne, I'll be releasing an update this week (hopfully in the next couple of days) which will fully support Blender 4.0 (and will be backwards compatible).
I'd like to get it, however, Blender 4.0-stable version has just released. Is this already operational with the new version of Blender or should I wait till you do some update work?
I've had to fix a few drawing issues with Blender 4.0 as the API has been updated. This is in testing at the moment (to make sure it's going to be backwards compatible) and should be released very soon. I'll reply to your comment here once I put a release out.
Just to let you know that Construction Lines version 0.9.68 has now been released and fully supports Blender 4.0.

Thanks for the comment! You can change the guide colour in the preferences Edit->Preferences->Add-ons->Construction Lines. There's a section for interface colours at the bottom. If you're using a M1+ Mac, you may also need to uncheck "allow dashed line drawing" to see the guides properly.
