Great tutorial!
Thanks for sharing about these lights and the headshot setup. What focal length are you shooting with for the pictures? Thank you 📸🌞
Their eyes makes them look like devils.
If ypu copy someone else lighting . than you have no style . i hate Triangle Light setup . Everyone is using it . bevome boring . you Should use Tv or Hollywood lighting . is the best .
You talk none sense .
Hey, Daniel, how are you? Adriano, here in Brazil. I'm still obsessed with this system and trying to build my first one. And since you were the person who explained it best out of all the videos I've seen so far (including Peter's =), I'd like to ask one more question: Is the size of the light source at the base of the triangle important? Does it necessarily have to be smaller than the two "walls" of the triangle? I'm asking this because I've seen some videos in which some photographers use stripbox-style softboxes on this base, but I have doubts about light leakage. I'm thinking of making the triangle with 2 strips measuring 35x160cm and for the base using a rectangular softbox measuring 80x120cm. Do you think it would work? Sorry for the long question. Thanks and greetings from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro)
I think since the top two lights of the triangle are so large with this setup, it makes sense to have a smaller one for the bottom.
Incredible! In some parts you were even able to explain it more clearly than Peter himself. I live in Brazil and work with portraits, I have many doubts about this system. But I would like to leave just two of the most important ones. I would appreciate it if you can answer: 1. Is the LED that forms the base of the triangle (the one that comes from below) really essential? I ask because when you adjusted it, raising it until it was close to entering the frame, it didn't seem to make that much of a difference (at least in the footage here on UA-cam). Would it be possible for a hitter to play the role of this LED at the base of the triangle? 2. Would it be possible to execute this triangle system using LED cannons (such as the Godox LA200D) with strip softboxes? Thank you very much in advance! And greetings from Brazil.
Thanks for the comment! 1. I find it to be essential. Probably harder to see in the video. But I see the difference in my finished images. 2. There are many people in Peter's Headshot Crew who do the triangle setup with strobes instead of continuous lights.
@@toptierheadshots Yes, I saw in some videos that some people on Peter's team use strobes. I'm going to try with continuous light, but using LED cannons like this Godox model I mentioned. Thank you very much for the answers. And congratulations on the great work!
Question? Bed riser and xdrop. Please explain
Bed risers are little platforms you put under each bed post to make your bed higher. XDrop is a backdrop system made by Westcott
Thanks for the video, much appreciated. I fully understand the idea behind those "Peter Hurley kind" Headshots. But man, this setup is so sensibel when it comes to positioning people (that are not models and not used to getting photographed). The light changes dramatically with just the slightest movement of the model. I am really good in interacting and giving instructions, but each time I tried this, the models moved waaaay to far when I ask them to move one or two inches. And after a while, they feel very uncomfortable. And if you have a skinny model like in your video, it may work. If your client has a double chin.. phew... I know, the push-the-forehead-a-bit-to-the-camera-trick. But that is such an uncomfortable pose for amateurs... I am still working on getting similar results with a setup that is easier to handle... :). All the best to you, greetings from Germany, Peter
Appreciate your comment! What I can tell you is that over the past three years, I’ve used this method with HUNDREDS of people, and every single one was an amateur in front of the camera. Feel free to check out my website and see my portfolio. Toptierheadshots.com

Thank you! Recently joined Peter Hurley's headshot crew and we were a little discouraged at first by the hefty investment of the Wescott System. Your video has given us an option that would allow us to get started much more quickly. Based on your experience using the Godox System, has it held up over time? Also, I'm thinking of buying the one FL150R (rectangular light) and two FL100s (they are currently on sale for a pack of 2) which would work to fill and bottom light. Do you believe that would work or would you recommend using the two rectangular lights (FL150s) for the Key and Fill? Thank you again for all the help.
I use two FL150s as the top of the triangle and one FL100 for the bottom light. Works great!
@@toptierheadshots Thank you! To confirm, you use two FL150 not FL150 like what is shown in your video, is that correct? Did you make the switch at a later date?
also- what size space is this? it looks like 10-12 wide??
It's approximately 10X15!
just got these lights last week- I'm using them for the first time this weekend! Thank you for the tutorial!
Glad I could help!
I would say this is more of a loupe lighting pattern than a Rembrandt, don't you think? Interesting to see it done with a constant light in a strip box either way.
Can these work in daylight indoor situations?
I do usually like to turn lights off in a room if possible. But I'm also using them at 45% power.
@toptierheadshots Hi top Tier with the lights indoors, you always have them at 45% all 3 of them?
Can you ise these in daylight indoors ? Or if you cant turn off a light on a office?
So helpful to see the placement!
I see what you did there with the XPro 😊
Hi! I'm trying to set up Peter Hurley's triangle of light with flashes, so I plan to buy 3 or 4 Godox stripboxes but I am unsure about the size. I'm between 12"x47" and 9"x35". What do you recommend? Right now my equipment is 3 Godox V860III and 1 Godox V1, 1 softbox 80x80cm, and 1 octabox 90mm.
I've seen people do it with three 1'x3' Westcott strip box softboxes
Are 3 Strip boxes 0.75' x 2.92' close enough or the difference is too big with 1'x3'? @@toptierheadshots
What ISO are you shooting at? And what’s your exposure?
f/4, 1/200, ISO 160
What shutter speed are you at? Are these Godox LEDs flicker free?
1/200 sec. I've used these lights to shoot video, no flicker visible whatsoever.
@@toptierheadshots ISO 100 at 1/200?
Thanks Daniel, Excellent video. I am working through getting the perfect convergence and I noticed that your lights are a bit more feathered than Peter's. It is like the lights are pointed more toward each other. Also, I am wondering if you like the look better without the grids on the 150s vs having the grinds on. Thanks again.
Thanks for commenting! They are heavily feathered, but not pointing directly at each other. I've never used them with the grids on.
Thanks been looking at a lot of lighting solutions, I love my strobes, but for headshots in a game of inches strobes take awhile to dial in. Westcott offers something similar but for a lot more. I might have to order these. Thanks.
How the hell have I not seen this video?!
Hi! would 3 fl100 work as well for the "Hurley triangle"? I was just wondering as it seems that you don't need the full length of the light not 150 watts of power! Thanks for the useful info!
Any solution to control with "godox light" please ?
Do you use a 14 or 16 inch MacBook? Wondering if 14 is big enough for showing clients images on a stand like you do.
You can certainly use a 14 inch. But I personally use and prefer the 16.
How many square feet is the room you have all of this setup in? Very nice!!
It's a 10x15 room. Thanks!
@@toptierheadshots great video! do you think this setup could be done in a 10 x 12 feet room? Or would that loss of three feet not make it feasible?
Thanks for posting this video !!!! Do you think this setup would also work with the Godox FL 150 60x60 square ?
You're welcome! It could, but the long lighting strip configuration helps you control the lighting more, I believe.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I just purchased these lights, and I'm hoping you can share your light power settings as well as camera settings. Thanks.
Awesome! The top two are at 45% power, the bottom one is 35% power. Camera settings are f/4, 1/200, ISO 160. And then usually add a bit more exposure in post as well.
Hello, I'm seaching for these online to buy. I can only find the FL100 which are not as long. Where did you find yours?
Hi Daniel is there a reason you don't use the diffuser on the fill light? Thanks
The bottom light is diffused, it is just a different brand than the top two lights. I've since switched the bottom light to a Godox to be more consistent.
Got it, thanks. I bought this light kit and I am really struggling with the swivel head provided by Godox- it doesn't allow you to adjust the light towards the side and you must move the whole stand to get the light angled crossways. It seems there should be something out there that provides a lot more adjustability- a Magic Arm perhaps. However I can't find anything that has female spigot reciever on both ends. Any ideas? Thanks. @@toptierheadshots
Did you choose these only for the space saving or do you just overall prefer this light over parabolic with single source?
I chose these because this is the Peter Hurley lighting style for Headshots.
Thanks for making these videos! I see you’ve had the Godox led panels for a while. If you could get a different brand with the same price value, would you switch from this kit? Also how do you use these when there is quite a bit of ambient light, say like at a convention? TIA!
You're welcome! I would definitely buy these again, excellent value at a great price point. I've definitely used them in areas where there is a fair bit of ambient light. I only regularly use them at 45% power, so there's a lot of ability to brighten the lights to account for ambient if needed. However, I wouldn't use them outside. I'd switch to strobes at that point.
I would love to see you so another video of all variety of people. Alot of videos always show super attractive people.
I'm just using whoever I can get in front of my camera. Appreciate the comment though.
Just wondering if I should buy 3 x 150R's or the same set up as you have? Any benefits?
I'm now using 2 x FL150Rs (same as in the video) and then 1 x FL100 for the bottom light. Excellent results
I really enjoy your explanations! Thank you. So, you would recommend GODOX FL150R lights? Is there a time when you switch to strobes in the same space?
Yes, absolutely! I never use strobes with this style of headshot. Although they would be useful in a situation where you need to eliminate bright, ambient light.
Thanks for sharing!
Great video and I love that you’re getting equally brilliant results with the Godox system. I’ve just returned from the Zurich Headshot Intensive with Peter- it was was mind blowing, he really is a great person too.
Thank you!
Difficult to find a more uncomfortable situation for those being photographed.
If you are coaching and interacting with people well, the opposite is actually true!
Elaborate...?
What do you do for clients that wear glasses for a setup like this?
A lot of times, the reflections aren't that bad, and my retoucher is able to remove any glare. If the reflections are really bad, I'll take a few shots without glasses as a reference and then send those to my retoucher to help remove the glare. Or if they sometimes don't wear glasses at all, just shoot with no glasses.
Great video and work!
Thank you very much!
She looks nervous

Nice Video , can you provide which light size your using ? Are those the 11.8 X 47.2 Config ? Thank you
Yes, exactly. Here's the link to the previous video where I talk about these lights: ua-cam.com/video/EERx9mo0U_g/v-deo.html
great video. What lens/camera are you shooting your headshots with? TIA
Nikon Z6ii and Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Z macro lens
@@toptierheadshots Thank you for getting back to me. I'm a Nikon guy myself, since film days :-)
I bought these last year because of you!!
That's amazing!
What is the size of the bottom light when ordering the godox?
