Defending the Zone Read by Using a 4-3 Cover Zero
I don’t think you insult anyone’s intelligence. We’re here to learn. And people like me need to learn the basics.
This was very helpful because I was very confused by techniques. When I hear technique I think of some sort of method, or mixed up with the stance of the lineman. No, technique is really a physical lineup position. Thanks for clearing that up.
This is probably the smoothest most beginner-friendly intro to the 46 that I've seen. I"m not a coach or player nor have I ever been. Just a fan who wants to learn the 46 just enough to appreciate the X's and O's on the field.
Every x/o concept has different nomenclature. When didn’t become so customized? “Y” that’s a TE…”T” that’s a “RB”. Why not have “9”/DE cover the Y and S the T
One thing that confuses me is when you say things like 2 technique or 4 or 6, like that OL diagram at the very top. Is that explained in another video? I assume the technique numbering is different than the hole numbering?
I had no idea play design was this complicated! I'm used to "go to the mailbox and slant right". But I always wondered when looking at play diagrams, like how do they know the guys you're assigned to are going to be in whatever formation or place, like how do you know where to draw those blocking lines to know the play will work? Yeah this video went over my head but I found it educational nonetheless. I guess my question would be: Are those rules at the top specific for power runs, and you'd apply the same rules no matter the gap you're running in, or your own offensive formation? And then for other types of runs you'd have different sets of rules? It would be awfully confusing if you had to build different sets of rules for each of the 100-200 plays in the book. And do you change the rules for different opponents' strengths and formations, or do you just put in a different group of plays with rules that take advantage of their weaknesses?
Actually the 46 was not Buddy's original idea. The oringinator for the 46 was Neill Armstrong, Dc of the Vikings from 1970-1977 before moving on to the Chicago Bears. He took buddy with him to be his DC as he was a DL coach for Bud Grant in the 70s.
Super job, I’ve been looking for this for a long time. Thanks for your easy to understand blocking concept
TRES BIEN EXPLIQUE MERCI
Question, how and when do you know who goes first with your 3 and 9 (we call him 5 technique if no TE) techniques?
Why is the 9 technique different from the 5?
Thanks
Ever do anything on 3-3-5? I'm looking to run that this year any thoughts?
Looking to be an intern at a HS to get into coaching. Trying to get learn as much information before I contact them, thanks
What about the Mike bumping the Sam to flat coverage on T #3 and the Mike sitting down in that middle zone with the SS still able to cover help on the 1 and Y .
Just want to say thank you Carter. The way I was taught is ..."you're never too old to learn"...Good luck with your channel.
It actually makes sense that the tight end is eight cause if it was 6 it’ll have to share 5 with 4 .
Interesting, we just used gap numbers left are even, right odds (mirror of offense). Then our play would determine our line up. My coaches played for usc back in the 60’s
My coaches did the same as yours, except odds on left and evens on right.
@@mayhulk7514 I think it’s way faster. We also called out how to line up in the gap or outside, stunt left/right etc
Thank you I need this
I truly appreciate your expertise and knowledge towards the game. If you can could you please go over 3-4, Dime and Nickel fronts and responsibilities.
Same responsibilities different personnel (if you are talking about the cover 2 man concept)
Really appreciate the videos, thanks
how do you run this against a 44 defense
2,4,5nickel defense 2 man under
Can I do video 2 man under with nickel defense
Can you run inside zone against a Wide 7 or Wide 9 defense?
do one for the 3-4
I just found your video.I must say that whether this defense holds up with your personel or not is the question. I like the way you use colors in your diagrams.Your knowledge is obvious and you make it easy to understand. Thanks for a great job.
Sound fundamental teaching principles for the play side zone blocking scheme!
This is excellent info for a person who struggles with the defensive user (because of ignorance of coverage responsibilities). Thanks again.
Back side Tackle usually would hinge block inside B gap. That's for blitz. 9 tech if he wrong arms, now depending where the 9 tech attacks whether guard would log block or the FB would log block if 9 tech attacks FB. RB must read guards block. RB steps are also important for the timing of FB and pulling guards blocks.
Curious on how to stop some cover four beaters. For example a deep dig and post, or a smash concept play. I’m an offensive guy trying to learn more about defence.
Axe has an E on the end.
Center has anyone from zero gap to backside 4 gap. However, your rules seem inconsistent and maybe you can clarify the difference between diagram 3 and 4. But they seem to be very similar. The center has zero tech in each diagram and although he has a 3 tech in diagram 3 and a 4 tech in diagram 4 both would fall in that zero to 4 tech backside responsibility. Therefore as I understand your rules the center should block head up (zero tech) before going for the 3 tech. However, I agree that you must prevent penetration through the pulling guard hole so blocking the 3 tech before the zero tech makes sense. It is just that the rules does not seem to apply in the right order.
We are a run heavy I formation team. As a result, we frequently saw teams give us a bear look during our first 2 years. Today, we see more 44 defenses. You said that the Bear is hard to trap but that was the play that force our opponents to get out of the Bear. I don't know why it was any different than what you described but when we faced Bear defenses we were able to trap the poop out of it. Maybe it was personnel, that is either we had very good linemen or they had very bad defensive linemen, but we finished the season 2 - 8 and they finished 7-3, so I doubt it was personnel. Yet we beat them 27 -12. When we saw the three inside linemen and LB's out wide, my players started salivating. Playside guard (PG) blocks down (Seal) to prevent penetration by the zero tech, center blocked back to replace pulling guard on the backside 3 tech again prevent penetration (Seal block) and Backside guard trapped the playside guard. Since the trap hits quick the Seal Blocks do NOT have to get much movement, instead just get in the way of the backside zero and 3 tech long enough for the fullback to get to the LOS. The play really comes down the pulling technique. Pulling guard must pull flat to allow center to clear find the PG's butt and "S" turn off the PG's butt (meaning dip upfield and turn out on the playside 3 tech being trapped). With the wide LB's, once you crease the LOS you have a minimum 10 yard again.
46 isnt named after where playrts line up,, its was the bears safety uniform #46' lmao/.... whats a 44?? john riggins d? thank u .. im lol
I thought it was 2,4,6 not 2,4,8
Why not call it “Far Left” instead of Queen?
I don't remember learning this in pop warner.
What are the responsabilities on four verticals ?
what program are you using?
So for the second diagram, you mentioned the Will linebacker is liable for the x side tight end. In a passing situation, do you still keep the Will linebacker across from the tackle and have the 9-tech on that side shed him to slow down an outside route or line the Will linebacker across from the tight end?
Thanks for this. TV and radio commentators use this terminology assuming the rest of us already know what it means.
great breakdown
wow these videos are bringing my understanding of the game to whole new levels. Thank you so much!!
Nice i subbed ... An didnt even watch a video yet
I think greasy neale had the outside backers up in the c gap and the zero tech was a backer.
Way to boring
You got 12 defenders?
Out of all my years of watching football, this video cleared up a lot. Thanks.
I use odd numbers 3,5,7,&9
Does anybody know what app he is using on the computer?
